  • The supernatant treatment of recovery process of raw materials of paper plant was studied using DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation) system. We investigated the removal efficiency (COD, SS and turbidity) of the DAF process. The effects of parameters such as A/S ratio, pressure, flotation conditions, coagulant concentration, mixing conditions, size and ratio of packing and nozzle type were examined. The results showed that the optimum A/S ratio and pressure were 0.058 and 4.5-5 atm, respectively. Injection times of pressurized water around 30 s and flotation times around 10 min appeared to be optimal for the DAF operation. Anion polymer addition improved the removal of COD, SS and turbidity. The smaller size and the more packing ratio were enhanced the removal efficiencies. The order of performance of nozzle was full cone > flat > assemble type.

  • The vortex tube is a simple device for separating a compressed fluid stream into two flows of high and low temperature without any chemical reactions. Recently, vortex tube is widely used to local cooler of industrial equipments and air conditioner for special purpose. The phenomena of energy separation through the vortex tube were investigated to see the effects of cold flow inlet-outlet ratios and partial admission rates on the energy separation experimentally. The experiment was carried out with various cold flow inlet-outlet ratios from 0.28 to 10.56 and partial admission rates from 0.176 to 0.956 by varying input pressure and cold air flow ratio. To find best use in a given cold flow inlet-outlet ratio and partial admission rate, the maximum temperature difference of cold air was presented. The experimental results were indicated that there are an optimum range of cold flow inlet-outlet ratio for each partial admission rate and available partial admission rate.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis was performed for the natural convection heat transfer in a vertical channel which was consisted of two finite-thickness vertical walls with heat source. The ratio of the thermal conductivity of wall to air played an important role in the analysis. The case for which one side wall has protrusion resistances was also examined. The governing equations for the system was discretized by control volume formulation and solved by SIMPLE method. As the result of this study, it was found that the uniform heat flux boundary condition could be applied when the conductivity ratio was below approximately 50 and the uniform temperature boundary condition could be used when the conductivity rat io was over approximately 15,000. However, when the conductivity ratio was between 50 and 15,000, the thermal conductivity ratio value should be considered for the analysis. It was also found that the existence of protrusion resistance influenced the thermal field up to the distance of 3-4 times of the protrusion length.

  • When using an automotive heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, we can obtain fresh outside air while maintaining the interior vehicle temperature. In this study, a correction equation considering experimental data for automotive indoor air leakage is defined to simulate the ratio of fresh air to recirculated air in the automobile cabin. With this correction equation, numerical results are compared with experimental data and validated. The $CO_2$ concentration in the automotive cabin is evaluated by considering various boarding conditions and mass flow rates of the HVAC system. The $CO_2$ concentration model derived in this study is expected to be used to control the effective air conditioning and become a basic research tool for automotive air quality control system development.

  • This paper is on the sensitivity characteristics of a concentric composite mandrel type fiber optic acoustic sensor with inclusion of an air cavity With the finite element method, we have analyzed sensitivity variation of the sensor in relation to its geometrical factors such as thickness of the air cavity, thickness of the foaming layer, and the ratio of inner diameter/outer diameter of the mandrel. Results of the analysis suggest a thicker air cavity, a thinner foaming layer, and a smaller ratio of the inner diameter/outer diameter of the mandrel to be desirable for higher sensitivity. The sensor structure designed with the above rules provides the sensitivity of about 0.8dB higher than that of a normal concentric composite mandrel sensor without the inherent air cavity.

  • Instead of testing split air conditioners, an empirically based calculation procedure may be used to estimate the Energy Efficiency Ratio at ARI A test conditions. Typically, the system involving the indoor unit well sold and the given outdoor unit is called the matched system. All other systems involving a given outdoor unit and other indoor units are called the mixed systems. To estimate the EER(A) for the mixed systems, EER(A) for the matched system must be known, Generally, the EER(A) for the matched system is known. This procedure relies on independent measurements and calculations made on an outdoor unit in conjunction with a matched indoor and a mixed indoor coil. A heat pump simulation model was used to quantify the effects of individual system components on the system performance. The procedure is applicable to all air-conditioning units having rated cooling capacities less than 19,000W and charged with refrigerant 22.

  • In the air-conditioning industry, the refrigerant charging amount is one of the most important parameters affecting the energy efficiency ratio of heat pumps. An experimental study was performed on the characteristics of an inverter driven air-to-air heat pump system with a variation of compressor frequency and charging amount of refrigerant. The frequency was altered from 40Hz to 70Hz and the charging amount was changed from 1.6kg to 2.8kg in tests. The variation of performance was measured with switching of the expansion valve on each frequency and charging amount. All the tests were performed at the Korean Standard and test conditions of the air conditioners. As results, it was found that there existed the charging amount and the level of the suction gas superheat which provided the highest energy efficiency ratio at all the frequency bands.

  • the present study, the addresses the hysteric phenomenon of under-expanded jets with a help of a computational fluid dynamics methods. The under-expanded jets of both dry and moist air have been employed to the transient processes for the pressure ratio. It is known that under-expanded air jet produced during the process of increase in pressure ratio behaves different from the reducing process, leading to a hysteric phenomenon of under-expanded jet. It is also known that moist air jet significantly reduces the hysteric phenomenon found in the dry air jet, and that non-equilibrium condensation which occurs in the under-expanded moist air jet is responsible for these findings.
