제주지역 지표 오존 농도의 시.공간적 분포 특성 (The Characteristics of Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Surface Ozone Concentration in Jeju Island)

  • This study has been performed to clarify the characteristics of temporal and spatial distribution of surface ozone concentration over Jeju Island, one of the cleanest areas in Korea with low emissions of air pollutants. Ozone data are monitored at four sites in Jeju Island. These monitoring sites are located at two urban area(referred to Ido and Donghong), coastal area(Gosan site) and forest site(Chuna site). Ozone data has been routinely collected at these sites for the late four years. The patterns of seasonal cycle of ozone concentrations at all stations show the bimodal with the peaks on spring and autumn and a significant summer minimum. However, the patterns of diurnal variations at rural station, i.e., Gosan and Chuna sites are considerably different to those at urban stations such as Ido and Donghong sites. The patterns of $\DeltaO_3$ variations are very similar with those of monthly mean ozone concentrations and $\DeltaO_3$ values are exceeded 30 ppb, at urban stations. This may be that urban stations are more influenced by local photochemical reactions rather than rural stations. In order to assess the potential roles of meteorological parameters on ozone formation, the meteorological parameters, such as radiation, temperature, and wind are monitored together with ozone concentrations at all stations. The relationships of meteorological parameters to the corresponding ozone concentration are found to be insignificant in Jeju Island. However, at Gosan and Donghong stations, when the sea breeze blew toward the station, the ozone concentration is considerably increased.

The Effect of Platform Screen Doors on PM10 Levels in a Subway Station and a Trial to Reduce PM10 in Tunnels

  • $PM_{10}$ concentrations were measured at four monitoring sites at the Daechaung station of the Seoul subway. The four locations included two tunnels, a platform, and a waiting room. The outside site of the subway was also monitored for comparison purposes. In addition, the effect of the platform screen doors (PSDs) recently installed to isolate the $PM_{10}$ in a platform from a tunnel were evaluated, and a comparison between $PM_{10}$ levels during rush and non-rush hours was performed. It was observed that $PM_{10}$ levels in the tunnels were generally higher than those in the other locations. This might be associated with the generation of $PM_{10}$ within the tunnel due to the train braking and wear of the subway lines with the motion of the trains, which promotes the mixing and suspension of particulate matter. During this tunnel study, it was observed that the particle size of $PM_{10}$ ranged from 1.8 to 5.6 ${\mu}m$. It was revealed that the $PM_{10}$ levels in the tunnels were significantly increased by the PSDs, while those in the platform and waiting room decreased. As a result, in order to estimate the effect of ventilation system on $PM_{10}$ levels in the tunnels, fans with inverters were operated. It was found that the concentration of $PM_{10}$ was below 150 ${\mu}g/m^3$ when the air flow rate into a tunnel was approximately 210,000-216,000 CMH.

Photosynthetic carbon fixation by tropical coral reef phytoplankton assemblages: a UVR perspective

  • Photosynthetic carbon fixation regulates air-sea $CO_2$ fluxes in the waters of coral reefs. However, little has been documented on the effects of solar UV radiation (UVR, 280-400 nm) upon photosynthetic behaviors of phytoplankton dwelling in these ecosystems. In order to evaluate the aforesaid, surface dwelling tropical coral reef phytoplankton assemblages collected from the South China Sea were exposed to solar radiation (i.e., photosynthetically active radiation [PAR] + UV radiation A [UVA] + UV radiation B [UVB], 280-700 nm; PAR + UVA, 320-700 nm; and PAR, 400-700 nm) under static or simulated-mixing conditions. Under the static condition, UVA and UVB significantly reduced the carbon fixation with the maximum of 22.4 and 15.3%, respectively; while lower UVR-related photosynthetic inhibition was observed in case of phytoplankton samples being subjected to mixing. At a moderate level of mixing (i.e., circulation time 80 min), the UVA and UVB caused inhibition were lowered by 52.1 and 79.6%, respectively. Based on this it could be stated that vertical mixing induced by winds and/or tides in the natural environments could reduce the inhibitory effect of solar UVR on phytoplankton productivity in the coral reefs water.

Changes in Atmospheric Mercury Concentrations in Seoul, Korea and its Significance: A Case Study Between 1997 and 2002

  • The concentration levels of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) in ambient air have been investigated from a monitoring station located in Yang Jae district of Seoul, Korea for a long-term period covering 1997 through 2002. The mean concentration of Hg, if computed based on its hourly measurement data for this six-year period, was $5.32\pm3.53 ng m^{-3} (N = 27,170)$. The inspection of the diurnal distribution patterns indicated the presence of notably high concentration levels during nighttime relative to daytime (e.g., the mean hourly value as high as $9 ng m^{-3}$ in winter nighttime). When divided seasonally, the highest mean of $6.12 ng m^{-3}$ was also observed during winter followed by spring, fall, and summer. The results of our analysis confirmed the relative dominance of winter (seasonally) or nighttime (diurnally), while exhibiting a complicated trend on a long-term basis. Examination of our data over a different temporal scale consistently indicated that dynamic changes in Hg concentrations occurred through time in line with changes in the strength and diversity of the source processes. It is thus acknowledged that the presence of unusually high Hg levels is the consequence of intense man-made activities, while such signatures can vary in a competitive manner.

확산측정기를 이용한 대전시 도로변에서의 이산화질소 측정 (Nitrogen Dioxide Measurement with Diffusive Passive Samplers at the Curbside Points in Daejeon)

  • This study investigates the variation and spatial distribution of nitrogen dioxide($NO_2$) concentrations measured with passive diffusive samplers at 40 curbside points in Daejeon. Average $NO_2$ concentration was $39.8{\pm}18.0\;ppb$ (n=1,127) and the significant difference in concentrations by regional groups (Dong-gu, Jung-gu, Seo-gu, Daedeok-gu, Yuseong-gu) was not observed. The frequency distribution of $NO_2$ concentration was found to be a normal distribution with the high frequency in the concentration range of 30 to 40 ppb (20 to 25%). Average $NO_2$ concentration measured during the rainy periods was lower than that measured during the non-rainy periods and the decrease of concentration by rainfall was about 16% (7 ppb). The variation of $NO_2$ concentrations measured by passive diffusive samplers during the sampling period was similar to that continuously measured at the air quality monitoring station.

2003년 여름동안 서울지역에서의 오존의 광화학적 특성에 대한 사례 연구 (Case study of ozone photochemistry in the Seoul metropolitan area during the summer 2003)

  • This study examines the local ozone photochemistry in the urban air. The photochemical formation and destruction of ozone was modeled using a photochemical box model. For the model prediction of ozone budget, measurements were carried out from an urban monitoring station in Seoul ($37.6^{\circ}N,\;127^{\circ}E$), Korea for intensive sampling time period (Jun. $1\~15$, 2003). Photochemical process is likely to play significant role in higher ozone concentrations during the sampling period. The results of model simulation indicated that photochemical ozone production pathway was the reaction of NO with $HO_2$ while ozone destruction was mainly controlled by a photochemical destruction pathway, a reaction of $H_2O$ with $O(^1D).$ The contribution of NMHCs to formation and destruction of ozone in the urban was significant. This was entirely different from remote marine environment. The rates of net photochemical ozone production ranged from 0.1 to 1.3 ppbv $h^{-1}$ during the study period.

시계열 해수면온도 산출을 위한 이어도 종합해양과학기지 열적외선 관측 시스템 구축 (Establishment of Thermal Infrared Observation System on Ieodo Ocean Research Station for Time-series Sea Surface Temperature Extraction)

  • 이어도 종합해양과학기지(IORS, Ieodo Ocean Research Station) 주변 해역은 시 공간적으로 해양 환경 변화가 심하여, 해양-대기교환 과정을 비롯하여 해양 생태계와 기후 변화 연구에 필수적인 해수면온도(SST, Sea surface temperature) 자료의 지속적인 측정이 요구되는 해역이다. 본 연구에서는 이어도 종합해양과학기지에 열적외선 센서를 이용하여 해수면온도 연속 관측이 가능한 시스템을 구축하였다. 자동 대기 보정 및 해양 조건에 따른 방사율 계산이 가능한 해수면온도 추출 알고리즘을 개발하였고, 현장측정 해수면온도 자료와의 비교 및 검증을 통해 정확도를 평가하였다. 2015년 5월 17일부터 26일, 그리고 2016년 7월 15일부터 18일까지 기지에 체류하는 동안 열적외선 관측 시스템으로 측정된 해수면온도와 기지 부착 CT (Conductivity-Temperature) 및 튜브 부착 수온 센서들을 이용하여 현장에서 측정된 해수면온도 시계열을 비교하여 상호상관계수0.72-0.85, 평균제곱근 편차 $0.37-0.90^{\circ}C$의 정확도를 얻었다. 이 시스템은 이어도 종합해양과학기지뿐만 아니라 신안 가거초 및 옹진 소청초 등의 다른 종합해양과학기지에도 쉽게 구축이 가능한 시스템으로써 향후 발사될 인공위성의 해수면온도 산출알고리즘 개발의 테스트사이트나 검보정사이트로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대할 수 있다.

Ambient Fine and Ultrafine Particle Measurements and Their Correlations with Particulate PAHs at an Elementary School Near a Highway

  • Ambient particulate matter (PM) and particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations were measured continuously for 70 days at a Korean elementary school located near a highway. The $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_1$ values were measured with a light-scattering, multi-channel, aerosol spectrometer (Grimm, Model 1.107). The number concentrations of the particles were measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer and counter (SMPS+C) which counted particles from 11.1 to 1083.3 nm classified in 44 channels. Particle-bound PAHs were measured with a direct reading, photoelectric aerosol sensor. The daily $NO_2$, $SO_2$, and CO concentrations were obtained from a national air-monitoring station located near the school. The average concentrations of $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_1$ were 75.3, 59.3, and $52.1{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. The average number concentration of the ultrafine particles (UFPs) was $46,307/cm^3$, and the averaged particle-bound PAHs concentration was $17.9ng/cm^3$ during the study period. The ambient UFP variation was strongly associated with traffic intensity, particularly peak concentrations during the traffic rush hours. Particles <100 nm corresponded to traffic-related pollutants, including PAHs. Additional longterm monitoring of ambient UFPs and high-resolution traffic measurements should be carried out in future studies. In addition, transient variations in the ambient particle concentration should be taken into consideration in epidemiology studies in order to examine the short-term health effects of urban UFPs.

지역 분할 방법에 의한 ISCST3 모델링으로 수도권 지역에서 SO2 농도 예측 연구 (A Study on the Prediction of SO2 Concentrations by the Regional Segment ISCST3 Modeling in the Seoul Metropolitan Area)

  • $SO_2$ concentrations in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) were predicted by the regional segment ISCST3 modeling. The SMA was segmented by three modeling regions where the weather monitoring station exists since the area of the SMA, approximately $100km{\times}100km$, is too wide to be modeled by one modeling domain. The predicted concentrations by the model were compared with the measured concentrations at 39 air monitoring stations located in the SMA to validate the ISCST3 modeling coupled with the regional segment approach. The predicted concentrations by the regional segment method showed better performance in depicting the measurements than those by the non-segment ISCST3 modeling. The correction methods of the calculated concentrations reviewed were here the correlation method by the first order linear equation and the ratio method of observed to calculated concentrations. The corrected concentrations by two methods showed good agreement with the measured data. The ratio method was, however, easily applicable to the concentration correction in case of a wide modeling region considered in this study.

USN을 이용한 지하철 역사 대기환경 모니터링 시스템 (Environmental Sensor Monitoring System of Subway Stations Using USN)

  • 지하공간에서의 $PM_{10}$ 농도는 지하철 승객의 건강을 위해서 항상 모니터링되어야 한다. 서울메트로와 서울도시철도공사는 몇몇 공기 오염물질을 주기적으로 측정하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 지하철 역사의 $PM_{10}$ 농도를 연속해서 측정하기 위해, 선형회귀분석법을 이용하여 광산란식 미세먼지측정기의 성능을 향상시키고자 하였다. 이와 더불어, $PM_{10}$, CO/$CO_2$. 습도, 온도 등을 화면에 표시하고 기록하기 위해 USN 모니터링 시스템을 구축하였다. 이들 측정된 센서 데이터를 전송하고 받기 위해 2.4GHz 지그비, 424MHz 무선통신, 그리고 CDMA M2M 기법 등을 적용하여 그 성능을 평가하고 지하철에 가장 적합한 무선통신 방식이 무엇인지 실험을 통해 확인하였다.
