In an fuel injection type gasoline engine, atomization of fuel droplet and mixture formation process are very important to understand engine combustion efficiency, and also has influence directly on the decision of engine performance and pollutant emission. In this study, perforated throttle valve instead of solid type throttle valve was developed and equipped to an SPI engine to promote secondary atomization and good droplet-air mixture formation. From the engine performance lest. it was verified that the case of perforated valve kas more advantages in each experimental parameters such as in cylinder gas pressure, mass burnt ratio, fuel consumption rate, and pollutant emission characteristics than that of solid one equipped. No matter what the same perforated valve, there are some distinct results in engine performance characteristics according to the perforate ratio.
Many pressurization systems are designed and built with the goal of providing a smoke-free escape route in the event of a building fire. A secondary objective is to provide a smoke-free staging area for fire fighters. In the present study, a computer program is developed to calculate pressure loss and flow rate at several building elements such as a room, a ]tabby a staircase and an air supply shaft. By the program as the dosing tool for the pressurization system, the capacity of the injection fan is calculated, and the design method is proposed for the optimization of the fan capacity.
The semi-solid metal forming process has been applied to realize a near-net shape fabrication of a high speed tool steel. A complicatedly shaped part out of SKH51 was successfully manufactured by introducing pertinent materials, tooling and processing conditions. A SKH51 billet with globular grains was heated at temperatures between 1300 and $1350^{\circ}C$ using high frequency induction heater to get semi-solid microstructure before high rate injection of mushy metal into a die cavity for the forming process. It was necessary to control the preheating of dies between 300 and $400^{\circ}C$ to maintain the homogeneous microstructure during the semi-solid metal forming process. Significant defects such as pores, high fraction of liquid fraction and segregation could be removed from the part by using air vents.
The combustion characteristics for the low NOx 50 kW-class gas turbine combustor have been experimentally investigated. In order to achieve the premixing and the lean burn combustion, the geometries of the primary zone including premixed chamber were modified from conventional combustor. The centerline profiles of CO and NO concentration, and temperature were measured for the premixed combustors with or without dilution holes in the liner. The effects of the pilot fuel injection rate and air dilution on flame stabilization and pollutant (CO, NO) emission are discussed in detail.
Computations were performed to investigate the spray characteristics of the twin fluid nozzle in three stage heavy-oil combustion burner. The burner geometry and flow conditions were provided by a burner company. The goal of the study is to estimate mean droplet size, initial velocity and spread factor of the nozzle through comparison between experiments and numerical analyses. Air stage ratio is 2:4:4 by mass, and O2 in exhaust gas is about 4 % by volume. Here, the agreement between the experiment and numerical analyses is evaluated by NOx generation. Spray characteristics will be linearly interpolated between fuel consumption rate l20L/h and 240 L/h.

Fuel atomization and mixture formation in an gasoline engine has influence on the engine performance and pollutant emission. The throttle valve installed in an intake system plays a greater role in control of mixture quantity in accordance with engine drive condition. In this study, the characteristics of secondary atomization developed at the downstream of the valves were observed using an image processing method. Two major kinds of valves, solid and perforated ones, are chosen in order to compare the valve performance with the experimental parameters of air flow rate, valve opening angle, and valve shapes. For the perforated valve, we can obtain the relatively small sized droplets, and nearly uniformed and dense distributed sprays with low loss coefficient than for the solid valve.
Blind hydraulic backfilling is a commonly used technique for subsidence control of the strata over unapproachable waterlogged underground excavations. In this investigation model studies on all the three variants of this technique, namely, hydro-pneumatic or air-assisted gravity backfilling, pumped-slurry backfilling and simple gravity backfilling, have been carried out in fully transparent models of the underground excavations. On examination of the filling process, it was revealed that in all the three cases, the basic process of filling occurs by sand transport along one or more meandering channels. The relative influence of sand, water and air flow rates on the area of filling from a single inlet point and the hydraulic pressure loss per unit length were studied in details. In hydro-pneumatic backfilling process, the air bubbles while moving upward through the meandering channels provide an additional buoyant force over and above the available hydraulic head. In this way the area of filling from a single borehole may be quite large even at small flow rates of water. During actual field implementation the injected air, if not released completely from the rise side holes, may cause troubles by way of creating potholes on the surface. The pumped-slurry technique has shown its capability of filling a relatively larger area at faster rate, especially when high-volume, low-pressure method was selected. But simple gravity filling was also found to be equally effective method as slurry pumping, especially when flow rates were high. In the second and third method discussed above, examination of variations of injection pressure was also done and its relation with physical phenomenon was also attempted. Some empirical relationships were also developed using multivariate regression with a view to help the practicing engineers.
Nicotine is the main component of environmental tobacco smoke, and its presence in indoor air is widely used as a secondhand-smoke indicator. Environmental tobacco smoke is a major source of indoor air pollution, but sufficient investigation of the uncertainty of its measurement, which mirrors the reliability of nicotine measurement, has not been performed. We calculated the uncertainty of measurement of indoor air nicotine concentration at low, medium, and high concentrations of 11.3798, 10.1977, $98.3768{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively, and we employed the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements (GUM), proposed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The factors considered in determining the uncertainty were uncertainty of the calibration curve (calibration curve and repeated measurements), desorption efficiency, extraction volume, and sampling airflow (accuracy and acceptable limits of flowmeter). The measurement uncertainty was highest at low concentrations; the expanded measurement uncertainty is $0.9435{\mu}g/m^3$ and is represented as a relative uncertainty of 63.38%. At medium and high (concentrations, the relative uncertainty was 13.1% and 9.1%, respectively. The uncertainty of the calibration curve was largest for low indoor nicotine concentrations. To increase reliability of measurement in assessing the effect of secondhand smoke, measures such as increasing the sample injection rate ($1{\mu}L$ or more), increasing sampling volume to increase collected nicotine, and using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or GC/MS/MS, which has a lower quantitation threshold, rather than gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorous detector, should be considered.

Recently, the international regulations about the exhaust emissions of the motorcycle have been strengthened. The electrically controlled fuel injection type motorcycle has been emphasized to meet with this regulation. However, since the pulsation phenomenon happens in the intake port of the motorcycle because of the characteristic of high speed and the smaller layout than the passenger car, there are many difficulties to select the factor about control parameters needed to develop the ECU system. In this paper, the pulsation values measured from the engine test were compared with the calculated one by WAVE, and it was analyzed the pulsation characteristic according to the driving condition and estimated the mass flow rate. This research showed that the lowest point of the pressure gets lowin the low load and the pulsation of pressure were increased in the high load. Also, the simulation program was verified by showing good prediction of the pulsation and air mass flow rate.

The effects of cooled-ECR on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions were investigated in a single cylinder HCCI diesel engine The premixed charge (gasoline or diesel) was obtained with premixing chamber and high-pressure (5.5MPa) injection system. Exhaust pressure control and cooled ECR system were used in order to reduce pressure fluctuation and to mix the exhaust gas well with the fresh intake air. The experimental results show that NOx emissions from conventional diesel engine are steeply decreased by HCCI diesel combustion with cooled-EGR in both case of gasoline and diesel premixing. But soot emissions are rapidly increased with the increase of ECR rate. The recycled exhaust gas increased the ignition delay of mixture and decreased maximum combustion pressure. HC and CO emissions of HCCI combustion are increased with ECR rate.
