  • The effect of 15% pinched diffuser in a centrifugal air compressor with a cascade airfoil diffuser on the aerodynamic performance is investigated using a numerical approach. The commercial CFD code for three-dimensional, turbulent, compressible flow fields is executed for various mass flow rates at a design speed which can be obtained as long as the calculation succeeds. The pinched diffuser is found to help improve the instability of flow within vaneless diffuser space, especially the reverse flow near shroud, and to change both stall/surge line and choking line to increase the surge margin. It is also found to generate more favorable increase of static pressure in diffuser region, and to increase the resulting pressure ratio and efficiency.

  • In this study, we describe the most expected behavior of cells on the modified surface and the correlation between the modified substrates and the response of cells. The physicochemical characteristics of substrates played an essential role in the adhesion and proliferation of cells. Glass and polymer substrates were modified using air plasma oxidation, and the surfaces were coated with self-assembled monolayer molecules of silanes. The PDMS substrates embedded with parallel micropatterns were used for evaluation of the effect of topologically modified substrate on cellular behaviour. BALB/3T3 fibroblast cells were cultured on different surfaces with distinct wettability and topology, and the growth rates and morphological change of cells were analyzed. Finally, we found the optimum conditions for the adhesion and proliferation of cells on the modified surface. This study will provide insight into the cell-surface interaction and contribute to tissue engineering applications.

  • The extinction of unsteady diffusion flame was experimentally studied in an opposing jet counterflow burner using diluted methane. The stabilized flame was perturbed by linearly varying velocity change that was generated by pistons installed on both sides of the air and fuel stream. As the results, the extinction of unsteady flame is dependent not only on the history of unsteadiness, but also on the initial condition. We found that there are several unsteady effects on the flame extinction. First, the extinction strain rates of unsteady cases are extended well beyond steady state extinction limits. Second, as the slope of the strain rate change increases, the unsteady extinction strain rate becomes larger. Third, the extension of unsteady extinction strain rate becomes smaller as the initial strain rate increases. We also found that the extension of the extinction limit mainly results from the unsteady response of the reaction zone because there is no retardation effect of a mixing layer for our experimental condition.

  • This study analyzed a change trend of ambient temperature over the last sixty years in the largest industrial city in Korea, Ulsan. Linear warming rates in Ulsan over the last 25 (1985 to 2009), 40 (1970 to 2009), and 60 (1950 to 2009) years were 0.0507, 0.0416, and $0.0277^{\circ}C/yr$, respectively. The annual average temperature (AAT) and the annual average of the daily lowest temperature (AADLT) in Ulsan increased 1.3 and $2.9^{\circ}C$, respectively, over the last fifty years (1960 to 2009). The increasing slopes of the AAT and AADLT over the fifty years in Ulsan were higher or much higher than those in neighboring cities and on a global scale. In the comparison analysis of daily average temperature over the most recent ten years, the highest ($15.9^{\circ}C$) was observed in the industrial area followed by the downtown, coastal, suburban, and rural areas with 14.6, 14.5, 14.0, and $12.8^{\circ}C$, respectively. The number of cold days less than $5.0^{\circ}C$ decreased, while the number of hot days higher than $20.0^{\circ}C$ increased. The decreasing slopes in the cold days in lower latitude cities were steeper than those in higher latitude cities in Korea.

  • In recent years there have been growing interests in the potential environmental effects of global climate change. Of specific interests is the role that climate change may play in altering natural volatile organic compound.(NVOC) emissions from trees and the subsequent impact of this perturbation on air quality and ozone formation. A novel vegetation enclosure chamber method was designed and constructed of Tedlar in order to estimate more accurate and precise NVOC emission rates of either small whole plants or the branches of large trees. The enclosure chamber was initially tested in the laboratory and also successfully evaluated in the field. Overall precision for this enclosure was estimated as RSD<10%(n=9). The overall errors associated with the enclosure method in a laboratory system might be relatively small (say<$\pm$15%); however, they might be rather large(say$\pm$40%) in a field-based system. Two consecutive samples were collected on each sampling day from the two pine species during the test period. Slash pine studies showed that the absolute percentage difference between the first and second samples varied from 0.33 to 29%. The percent differences between consecutive emission for loblolly pines varied from 0.74 to 24.2%.

The distribution of the amount of minute dust emission in Gwangju is shown as Road transportation(76.7%) > Non-road transportation(16.3%) > Non industrial combustion(6.1%) > Combustion in manufacturing industry(0.7%) > Waste disposal(0.2%) > Production process(0.1%). And the distribution of the amount of minute dust emission from each county is the following ; Buk District(32.8%) > Gwangsan District(26.0%) > Seo District(19.5%) > Nam District(13.2%) > Dong District(8.5%). 10. According to the major source of emission of each items, that of oxides of sulfur is Non industrial combustion, heating of residence, business and agriculture and stockbreeding. And that of NOx, carbon monoxide, minute dust is Road transportation, emission of cars and two-wheeled vehicles. Also, that of VOC is Solvent utilization emission facilities due to Solvent utilization. 11. The concentration of sulfurous acid gas has been 0.004ppm since 2001 and there has not been no concentration change year by year. It is considered that the use of sulfurous acid gas is now reaching to the stabilization stage. This is found by the facts that the use of fuel is steadily changing from solid or liquid fuel to low sulfur liquid fuel containing very little amount of sulfur element or gas, so that nearly no change in concentration has been shown regularly. 12. Concerning changes of the concentration of throughout time, the concentration of NO has been shown relatively higher than that of $NO_2$ between 6AM~1PM and the concentration of $NO_2$ higher during the other time. The concentration of NOx(NO, $NO_2$) has been relatively high during weekday evenings. This result shows that there is correlation between the concentration of NOx and car traffics as we can see the Road transportation which accounts for 59.1% among the amount of NOx emission. 13. 49.1~61.2% of PM-10 shows PM-2.5 concerning the relationship between PM-10 and PM-2.5 and PM-2.5 among dust accounts for 45.4%~44.5% of PM-10 during March and April which is the lowest rates. This proves that particles of yellow sand that are bigger than the size $2.5\;{\mu}m$ are sent more than those that are smaller from China. This result shows that particles smaller than $2.5\;{\mu}m$ among dust exist much during July~August and December~January and 76.7% of minute dust is proved to be road transportation in Gwangju.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine clean room(C/R) structure, air conditioning and contamination control systems and to provide basic information for identifying a correlation between the semiconductor work environment and workers' disease. Methods: This study was conducted at 200 mm and 300 mm semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities. The C/R structure and air conditioning method were investigated using basic engineering data from documentation for C/R construction. Furthermore, contamination parameters such as airborne particles, temperature, humidity, acids, ammonia, organic compounds, and vibration in the C/R were based on the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors(ITRS). The properties of contamination control systems and the current status of monitoring of various contaminants in the C/R were investigated. Results: 200 mm and 300 mm wafer fabrication facilities were divided into fab(C/R) and sub fab(Plenum), and fab, clean sub fab and facility sub fab, respectively. Fresh air(FA) is supplied in the plenum or clean sub fab by the outdoor air handling unit system which purifies outdoor air. FA supply or contaminated indoor air ventilation rates in the 200 mm and 300 mm wafer fabrication facilities are approximately 10-25%. Furthermore, semiconductor clean rooms strictly controlled airborne particles(${\leq}1,000{\sharp}/ft^3$), temperature($23{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$), humidity($45{\pm}5%$), air velocity(0.4 m/s), air change(60-80 cycles/hr), vibration(${\leq}1cm/s^2$), and differential pressure(atmospheric pressure$+1.0-2.5mmH_2O$) through air handling and contamination control systems. In addition, acids, alkali and ozone are managed at less than internal criteria by chemical filters. Conclusions: Semiconductor clean rooms can be a pleasant environment for workers as well as semiconductor devices. However, based on the precautionary principle, it may be necessary to continuously improve semiconductor processes and the work environment.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the cooling and the quality characteristics of milled rice stored in the forced air-blast type using thermo -electric semiconductor and in the still-air type chambers using refrigeration system with refrigerant(R-22). Cooling rates of milled rice in the forced air-blast type and in the still-air type chambers were $0.30\;^{\circ}C/hour$ and $0.21\;^{\circ}C/hour$, respectively. And the temperatures of cooling air and of milled rice at different positions in the forced air-blast type chamber showed severer change than those in the still-air type chamber. During storage of milled rice in the forced air-blast type and still-air type chambers for 14 weeks, there was no significant difference in the quality characteristics, such as b value and fat acidity of milled rice, and overall sensory quality of cooked rice. But the quality characteristics of milled rice stored in room temperature chamber($25^{\circ}C$) as control decreased very rapidly compare to those stored in the cooling chambers. In aspect of fat acidity of milled rice, 6 weeks was the limitation for the safe storage in room temperature.

  • Field experiment was performed from August 1996 to December 1999 to examine the performance of constructed wetland system for wastewater treatment in rural area. The constructed wetland system was installed in Konkuk University and the effluent from septic tank of school building was used as an influent to the treatment basin. The treatment basin was composed of sand bed with planted reed. From August 1996 to June 1998 the hydraulic loading rate was fixed with about 15.63cm/day and theoretical detention time was 1.38 days, and from July 1998 to December 1999 the hydraulic loading rate was about 6.25cm/day and theoretical detention time was 3.5days. It worked continuously even during winter time, and the sewage flowed without freezing even when average daily air temperature was below -1$0^{\circ}C$. Average removal rate of BOD , COD, and SS was about 70%, T-P removal rate was about 50.8% , and T-N removal rate was 23.9%. The reason for poor T-N removal might be due to high influent concentration and short retention times. At the later years BOD and COD removal rates were increased , and SS and T-P removal rates did not change significantly , but T-N removal rates were decreased. The effluent of the wetland system often effluent water quality standards for sewage treatment plant, therefore, further treatment would be required if the effluent need to be discharged to the public water. Wetland system involves relatively large land area and could be suitable for rural area. Therefore, utilization of reclaimed sewage for agricultural purpose or subsequent land treatment is recommended as a ultimate disposal of sewage for agricultural purpose or subsequent land treatment is recommended as a ultimate disposal of sewage in rural area.

  • The air pollutants from vehicle exhaust gas are affected by many factors including fuel qualities, engine and vehicle technologies, driving patterns. In particular, fuel qualities and after-treatment devices could directly affect the emission level of pollutants. The pollutant reduction characteristics that caused by enforced fuel quality standard were analyzed. Three types of test fuel were selected in accordance with Korean automotive fuel standard in 2006, 2009, 2012 and used for vehicle emission test in chassis dynamometer. European COPERT correction equation of fuel impact was considered as reference information to quantify the vehicle emission test results. The contribution rates of exhaust emission by COPERT correction equation showed that aromatic compounds and oxygen contents in gasoline fuel was most important. In case of diesel fuel, cetane index and polycyclic aromatic compounds accounted for the greater part. The exhaust emission effects by COPERT correction equation revealed that CO and VOC was increased 0.86%, 1.57% respectively in after 2009 gasoline when compared to before 2009 gasoline fuel. In case of light-duty diesel vehicle CO, VOC and PM were decreased in range of 3~7%. The result from this study could be provided for developing future fuel standards and be used to fundamental information for Korean clean air act.
