The analysis shows that the variation of maximum pressure of the cycle, rate of hear release, rate of mass burned, and combustion delay are influenced by the inlet air humidity in the spark-ignition engine. The quantitative combustion delay can be obtained from the rate of mass burned. Also, the variation of time loss and effective compression ratio with the change of inlet air humidity are dominated by the development of rate of heat release.
Some types of semi-Volatile organic compounds (SVOC) that are emitted from plastics used in building materials and household appliances have associated health risks, even at low concentrations. In this study, micro chamber method for measuring SVOC is introduced and SVOC such as di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and butylated hydroxyltoluene emitted a flooring material were measured using a micro chamber method. Airflow characteristics in a micro test chamber deeply depended on air exchange rate. From the evaluation using an index of air change efficiency, such as the air age and the coefficient of air change performance, a fixed air exchange rate of $1.5\;h^{-1}$ in the micro chamber is desirable.
Due to emission of vehicles during loading/unloading, ventilation system in Roll-on/Roll-off ship is inevitable; however it is very difficult to predict the ventilation performance before it is finally built in. Although the requirements for the ventilation system include air change rate and maximum allowable concentration of CO in the cargo holds, even prototype tests are hardly able to quantify the ventilation performance. In the present paper, a new method to assess the ventilation performance of Roll-on/Roll-off ship is proposed by using computational fluid dynamics. The air exchange is modeled by introducing multi-species transport of existing air In the holds and new air from the ventilation system. Conservation of multi-species as well as 3D Navier-Stokes equation are solved numerically in time dependent manner. Several cases of different configuration are considered. The results include predicted mass fraction of new air in the holds. It is also presented that CO concentration can be estimated based on the predicted air change performance. Due to the lack of experimental data, the computed results are not verified; however the proposed method can be applied as au assessment tool.
It is well known that the water infiltration rate depends on soil properties such as soil water content, water head, capillary suction, density, hydraulic conductivity, and porosity. However, most of proposed infiltration models assume that the air phase is continuous and in equilibrium with the atmosphere or air compression and air entrapment on infiltration was not considered. This study presents experimental results on unsaturated water infiltration to relate air entrapment and hydraulic conductivity function based on soil air properties. The objectives of this study were to measure change of soil air pressure ahead of wetting front under air drain and air confined condition to find the confined air effect on infiltration rate, to reduce the entrapped air volume related with soil air pressure to increase the soil permeability, and to make a basis of infiltration process model for the purpose of improvement of infiltration rate in the homogeneous soil column. The results of the work show that soil air pressure increases according to increasement of the saturated soil depth rather than the wetting front depth during infiltration process.

Han-green building is one of the modernized Korean traditional buildings developed by Korea Forest Research Institute. This building was developed to increase the competitiveness of Korean traditional building using state-of-art technologies; hence Han-green building has the inherent characteristics of traditional building such as exposed wood frame in wall. Because of discontinuity in wall by the exposed wood frame, there is a concern on heat-air leaking in terms of energy performance. In this study, air-tightness of Han-green building was evaluated to investigate the influence of gaps between frames and in-fill walls. Blower door test was carried out to evaluate the air-tightness, and air-change rate (ACH50) was evaluated by averaging four set of pressurization and depressurization test. The air-change rate of Han-green house was 5.91 $h^{-1}$. To improve energy performance of Han-green house, thermal infrared images of Han-green house were taken in winter with heating to find out where the heat loss occurred. It was found that the building lost more heat through gaps between frames and in-fill walls rather than through other parts of this building. After covering all the gaps by taping, the blower door test was performed again, and the air-change rate was improved to 5.25 $h^{-1}$. From this analysis, it was concluded that the heated air can leak through the gaps between frames and walls. Therefore, when one designs the post and beam building with exposed frame, the detail design between frame and wall needs to be carefully dealt. However, Han-green building showed relatively high air-tightness comparing with other country research results.
We measured the time-dependent concentration of VOCs emitted from Ondol floor, furniture, and the wall made of various building materials. After obtaining results from the previous measurement, we developed the estimation equations of the concentration decay, and obtained the estimated graphs for the concentration decay under different air change rates and loading factor conditions by using the estimated equations. We conducted our tests by applying our measurements to real residences for 110 days in the case of furniture and for 40 days in the case of the floor. We also conducted experiments in the cases of various wall materials for 7 days which totaled 10 times. We used the GC/FID for experiments for real residences accord-ing to the specified procedures of the NIOSH 1501, and carried out experiments for wall materials according to the specified procedures of the ASTM 5116-97. When conducting experiments for wall materials, we set the temperature and relative humidity at $23^{\circ}C$ and $50\%$, respectively. We also set the air change rate and loading factor at 0.7/h and $1.617 m^2/m^3$, respectively. Our results showed that it is possible to predict proplrly the time-dependent concentration decay of VOCs by using logarithmic functions in both cases of experiments for real residences and for wall materials. Furthermore, we found that the concentration decay rate of VOCs increased rapidly as the air exchange rate increased while the concentration decay rate decreased as the loading factor increased.
Heat transfer characteristics were investigated for the falling film flowing down the outside of an electrically heated vertical tube. Water was used for the falling film, and its Reynolds number was varied in the range of 70~500. Because water is heated and evaporated as it flows down, both sensible and latent heat transfer should be considered. The effect of the surrounding air movement was investigated by changing the direction of the air injection; without air injection, parallel-flow, and counter-flow. For all cases, sensible teat transfer rate was almost linearly increased with the increasing film flow rate. It was found that the film heat transfer coefficient was hardly influenced by the parallel air flow. However, the counter-flow of air reduced the heat transfer coefficient, which might be caused by the uneven distribution or flooding of the film. At high heat flux, a sudden change of the film heat transfer coefficient was detected as the film flow rate reached the transition value. It is supposed that this phenomenon was caused by the change in the film flow pattern.
This study was undertaken to judge the quality of air-tightened exhibition cases and to predict the dynamic variation of the relative humidity in the showcase. We performed a lot of experiments for the a few conditions and we numerically calculated the air change rate and the relative humidity in the showcase with the Artsorb under the same conditions. In all cases we confirmed that the numerical results about the relative humidity in the showcase had a good agreement with the experimental ones. Through the experiments of humidity control, we found out that the adsorption efficiency is varied with the location and the amount of the Artsorb. And the numerical results showed that the adsorption material is always needed to keep on the appropriate humidity condition in the showcase even though any kind of the showcases are used.
A numerical procedure is introduced to calculate local ventilation effectiveness using the definitions of local decay rate and local mean age. A low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is implemented to calculate steady state turbulent velocity distributions, and a step-down method is used to calculate transient concentration distributions. Simulations are carried out for several different values of air change rates and several different diffuser angles in a two-dimensional model of a half scale office room. The results show that the local ventilation effectiveness within a room could vary significantly from one location to another. The nominal air change rate based on the assumption of complete mixing of room air does not provide the local ventilation effectiveness information. It is numerically proved that the local mean age distribution obtained from the transient calculation is equivalent to the steady state concentration distribution with homogeneously distributed contaminant sources.
