The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in air and plant were measured every other week at Hankyong University located in Ansung, Kyoung-ki province from July to November of 1999. The predicted PCB concentrations in air derived from measured Morus allba were compared with ambient measurement data. This was necessary to test the possibility of using the two equations incorporating Riederer's and Bacci's bioconcentration factors (BCFs) based on the octanol-air partition coefficient (Ksub/oa/) to predict the air-plant equilibrium of PCBs. Ratios of calculated to measured PCB concentrations in air were 2.4 (1.24~4.36), 2.7 (0.17~7.96) using Riederer's and Bacci's equations, respectively Regression analysis between PCBs calculated by Riederer's equation and PCBs directly measured in air, showed correlation ($R^2$= 0.90). However, slope of regression between calculated and directly measured PCB concentrations was above 1. The results thus suggest that calculated PCBs were overestimated comparing with direct measurements. Bio-monitoring using Morus allba may have possibilities in predicting PCBs concentration in air with a further extension of air-plant equilibrium research.
Since 1980's during which environmental pollution became serious enough to urge various types of environmental educations in many areas. But, most emphasis has been put on theoretical education. Even field education training mostly focused on water pollution. Therefore, simple air pollution monitoring system was needed for better field education in air pollution. In this study, we evaluated Passive Sampler as an useful tool for teaching air pollution in field. Students have found passive sampler very effective tool. Recent comparative study of auto-monitoring and passive sampler networks suggested a potential use of passive sampler as an useful tool for environmental education. In this study, the correlation between two sets of values appears very high judging from the regression slope of 0.92 and correlation coefficient of 0.91 However, inexpensive Passive sampler with easy-to-operate colorimeter, has not been used in environmental education partially because large scale fluctuation in time and space characteristic to air pollution has been overlooked so that the sampler has not been tested for an effective educational tool. Passive sampler certainly deserves further in depth research as an effective air monitoring system, and better attention to its usefulness to teach students and public.

In order to construct an efficient monitoring system for major port cities in Korea, the first step to build and manage related laws and institutional infrastructure with strengthen the cooperation of the relevant agencies, regional port authorities, and port corporations. Second, for the management of air pollutants emitted by ports, a management system should be established through systematic inventory source inventory and real-time monitoring system. Third, active countermeasures should be established to reduce the emission of air pollutants by sources such as ships, harbor equipment, and trucks. This will improve the air quality of major port cities and move them to clean port cities.
The impact of a considerable increase in traffic volume on the emission and concentrations of air pollutants was investigated at three beaches (Haeundae (HB), Gwanganri (GB), and Songjeong (SB)) in Busan during beach opening period (BOP) in 2011. During the BOP, passenger car was the major vehicle type, followed by taxi, and van. CO was the major contributor of total air pollutant emissions followed by NOx, VOC, and $PM_{10}$. For the temporal variation of the emission of air pollutants during the BOP, it was generally the highest in the afternoon followed by the evening and morning, except for SB. For the spatial variation of their emission, it was the highest at GB followed by SB and HB. The emissions of air pollutants during the BOP were generally higher than those during the Non-BOP, except for HB. In contrast, the significant impact of the traffic volume increase on the concentrations of air pollutants at monitoring sites near the three beaches during the BOP were not found compared to the Non-BOP due to the significant distances between monitoring sites of air pollutants and monitoring sites of traffic volume at the beaches.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is composed of various procedures, such as screening, scoping, inventory survey, prediction, assessment, alternative assessment, mitigation measures, and post management. Environmental monitoring data for air quality or water quality, etc. is applied in the EIA process, especially in prediction and post management. As an effective tool of environmental monitoring, the remote sensing method, introduced recently, was used in collecting nationwide data concerning ecosystem and land use. This article explains the current monitoring status in Korea. Monitoring factors include air quality, water quality, soil, ocean, odor, noise, and ecosystems. This report explains the organization of the environmental monitoring system managed by the Ministry of Environment in Korea. Furthermore, it shows the environmental criteria and environmental policies applied to EIA in Korea.
Objectives : The objective of this study is to assess the factors influencing biological monitoring of textile coating factory workers exposed to N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF). Methods : We studied 35 workers who were occupationally exposed to DMF from 9 textile coating factories. The study was carried out in two phases; summer and winter. While air concentration of DMF, temperature and humidity were assessed in order to monitor the atmospheric conditions, biological monitoring was done to determine the internal dose by analyzing the N-methylformamide(NMF) collected from urine at the beginning and end of the shift. Questionnaires and medical surveillance were also obtained during the two phases. Results : Median air concentrations of DMF in winter and summer were 1.85 ppm and 2.78 ppm respectively. Also the difference between the urinary NMF concentration at the beginning and end of the shift $({\Delta}NMF)$ was always significant in each season (P < 0.001). The correlations between log DMF in air, log end-of-shift urinary NMF (r=0.555, P < 0.001) and log ${\Delta}NMF$ (r = 0.444, P < 0.001) was statistically significant in summer. The temperature, humidity, a shift system and different styles of clothing worn were significantly different during the two phases. In a multivariate analysis, temperature and the concentration of DMF in the air were the main factors influencing biological monitoring of textile coating factory workers. Conclusions : Concerning more comprehensive prevention measures to reduce exposure for those workers occupationally exposed to DMF, dermal exposure conditions such as temperature and humidity together with the air concentration of DMF should be assessed and biological monitoring is necessary to reduce adverse health effects, especially during the summer.

The objective of this study was to explore the characteristics of concentration of indoor air pollutants, such as $PM_{10}$, $CO_2$, and $NO_2$, measured by tele-monitoring system in a Seoul Metropolitan underground railway station from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2012. The annual average concentration of indoor air pollutants actually varied over a wide range and was found to exhibit marked variation with time and measurement sites (tunnel inlet, platform, and concourse). After installing platform screen doors, the average $PM_{10}$ concentration on platform and concourse was decreased by 43.8% and 31.2%, respectively during the study periods. The relationship between the concentration of $PM_{10}$ and meteorological parameters (relative humidity and rainfall) or the Asian dust events was regarded as statistically significant. The correlations between the number of boarding/alighting passengers and $PM_{10}$, $CO_2$, and $NO_2$ were calculated. A p-value of less than 0.01 was regarded as significant except $NO_2$. The I/O ratio of $PM_{10}$ concentration was elevated after a congested time (about 08:00 am). The average I/O ratios of $NO_2$ were observed in concourse and platform on 03:00 am with $1.76{\pm}0.91$ and $1.50{\pm}0.51$, respectively. The average daily variation of standard excess rate of $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ concentration in concourse and platform was investigated. The highest standard excess rate was observed on 21:00 (09:00 pm).

The ozone concentrations measured at the National Air Monitoring Stations between 1990 and 1995 were reviewed to detect any anomalies in the measurements. By screening the cases, in which variation of the ozone concentration from the previous measured value is greater than 75ppb, 125 station-days were identified as the test cases for the anomaly test. Historical and parallel consistencies of the measured concentrations were examined by plotting data for each test case. The detected anomalies can be classified into four categories; single outliers, anomalous variations during the startup period, baseline rises, and fluctuations in th diurnal variations. Anomalies were detected in as many as 80 cases among 125 test cases. Because of these anomalies, the number of hours exceeding 100ppb in the areas other than the Greater Seoul Area(GSA) could decrease from 157 to 107. Further studies for developing the methodology for eliminating the abnormal monitoring data are warranted for the data from the National Air Monitoring Stations are official to the both inside and outside of the country.
As the level of the ambient air quality becomes increasingly important, transportation management strategies tend to incorporate air quality standards into their measure of effectiveness. However, previous research efforts did not pay much attention to the empirical relationships between traffic volume and air quality, potentially due to the lack of data. With this background, this study investigates the relationship using Seoul's existing traffic and air quality monitoring data collected over the period of three years, from 2005 through 2007. In particular, those paired monitoring sites with a distance of less than one kilometer apart were utilized, targeting the emissions of CO, NO, $NO_2$, and $PM_{10}$. As a result, in general the data of two monitoring systems exhibited lower correlations, $NO_2$ showing a relatively higher correlation with traffic volumes than other emissions. In addition, it was found that the degree of correlation can be higher for the data obtained over the morning time period, 6am-9am, and the day after rainy days.
For home healthcare, the unconstrained measurement of physiological signal is highly required to avoid the inconvenience of users. The recording and analysis of the fundamental parameters during sleep like respiration and heart beat provide valuable information on his/her healthcare. Using the air mattress sensor system, the respiration and heart beat movements can be measured without any harness or sensor on the subject's body. The differential measurement technique between two air cells is adopted to enhance the sensitivity. The balancing tube between two air cells is used to increase the robustness against postural changes during the measurement period. The meaningful frequency range could be selected by the pneumatic filter with balancing tube. ECG (Electrocardiography) and respiration sensor (plethysmography) were measured for comparison with the signal from air mattress. To extract the heart beat information from air pressure sensor, digital signal processing technique was used. The accuracy for breathing interval and heart beat monitoring was acceptable. It shows the potentials of air mattress sensor system to be the unconstrained home sleep monitoring system.
