  • In this study, the feasibility of using telecommunication single-mode optical fiber (SMF) as a distributed fiber optic strain and crack sensor was evaluated in concrete pavement monitoring. Tensile tests on various sensors indicated that the $SMF-28e^+$ fiber revealed linear elastic behavior to rupture at approximately 26 N load and 2.6% strain. Six full-scale concrete panels were prepared and tested under truck and three-point loads to quantify the performance of sensors with pulse pre-pump Brillouin optical time domain analysis (PPP-BOTDA). The sensors were protected by precast mortar from brutal action during concrete casting. Once air-cured for 2 hours after initial setting, half a mortar cylinder of 12 mm in diameter ensured that the protected sensors remained functional during and after concrete casting. The strains measured from PPP-BOTDA with a sensitivity coefficient of $5.43{\times}10^{-5}GHz/{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ were validated locally by commercial fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. Unlike the point FBG sensors, the distributed PPP-BOTDA sensors can be utilized to effectively locate multiple cracks. Depending on their layout, the distributed sensors can provide one- or two-dimensional strain fields in pavement panels. The width of both micro and major cracks can be linearly related to the peak strain directly measured with the distributed fiber optic sensor.

  • We have proposed and demonstrated a fiber optic RH (relative humidity) sensor based on fiber Bragg grating covered with a polyimide film. As the polyimide film absolves the moisture in the air, its volume expands. As a result, the grating period of the FBG (fiber Bragg grating) covered with a polyimide film becomes wide and the Bragg wavelength is shifted. The sensor is implemented by fixing a 30 ㎛ thickness polyimide film on the surface of an optical fiber grating using an adhesive, and the characteristics of the device according to humidity are analyzed. The fabricated FBG RH sensor showed a high sensitivity of 0.0186 nm/RH% and a wide measurement range from 30% to 90%. The influence of environmental temperature on the characteristics of the RH sensor was also measured and analyzed. The feasibility of commercialization is presented.

  • There are various polluting emissions related to the air quality such as $NO_x$, $CO_2$, CO, VOCs, $O_3$, $SO_2$, $CH_4$, $H_2S$, $NH_3$, etc. We need the system that reduces emission of these environment gases and detects risk factors in modern society. Therefore, if we use the USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) technology and a MAV(Micro Air Vehicle) Quad Rotor which can be hovering and moving free for setting up the environment gas sensing system, the realtime measurement on environment gases is facilitated and by extension, in application of traffic watchdog, forest fire surveillance and counter-terrorism efforts, we anticipate making better use of a Quad Rotor.

  • We developed a high-performance methane gas sensor based on a $SnO_2$ hollow hemisphere array structure of nano-thickness. The sensor structures were fabricated by sputter deposition of Sn metal over an array of polystyrene spheres distributed on a planar substrate, followed by an oxidation process to oxidize the Sn to $SnO_2$ while removing the polystyrene template cores. The surface morphology and structural properties were examined by scanning electron microscopy. An optimization of the structure for methane sensing was also carried out. The effects of oxidation temperature, film thickness, gold doping, and morphology were examined. An impressive response of ~220% was observed for a 200 ppm concentration of $CH_4$ gas at an operating temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ for a sample fabricated by 30 sec sputtering of Sn, and oxidation at $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in air. This high response was enabled by the open structure of the hemisphere array thin films.

  • Recently, drones have been widely used to solve environmental problems such as environmental protection and natural disaster monitoring. This study focuses on the problem of the search altitude of drones when using drones to search for air pollution in order to maintain the urban air environment. In particular, when exploring air pollution in cities using drones, various experiments are conducted to determine the appropriate search altitude for each air pollution source and each communication module. Through the experiment, the maximum measurable altitude for the most common air pollutants, such as CO (carbon monoxide), NO2 (nitrogen dioxide), O3 (ozone), and P10, P2.5 (fine dust), was identified, and the effective search altitude for each air pollution source was determined. As a result of the experiment, three types of drone search altitudes including legally measurable altitudes were suggested. The communication module measurable altitude was 60m to 120m depending on the communication module, and the effective measurable altitude was analyzed from 10m to 100m.

  • In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things(IoT) and big data are emerging. However, the level of application of IoT to indoor environment is very weak. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a system for analyzing air pollutants or indoor air quality through real-time monitoring using the IoT. This paper implements a system that measures indoor environmental values using Arduino and various sensors, and stores the information obtained from various sensors into a database of server. The information stored in the server was built as a database and utilized in the ventilation system or air cleaner installed in the home or company's room. In the proposed system, it is possible to check the immediate indoor environmental condition through the LED status display of the monitoring sensor module while reducing the cost of the sensor used to implement IoT technology.

  • This paper proposes a drone flight trajectory method for accurate air pollutant emission designation detection. In areas with many factories, such as industrial complexes, there are workplaces that illegally emit air pollutants in a situation where monitoring is neglected. In the past, studies have been actively conducted to measure air pollutants in these areas using drones. The measurement method using a drone uses a method of detecting pollution by stopping around the chimney of a factory, but it has a problem in that the detection of air pollutants is inaccurate depending on environmental factors such as air pressure and wind. Therefore, this paper proposes a drone flight trajectory method for accurate air pollutant emission designation detection. This paper devises a screw orbit flight method in which a drone flies upward while rotating the chimney, and the total area of the chimney is detected and measured considering environmental factors. In the experiment, our proposal shows a higher performance than the existing method.

The IoT based fine dust monitoring system proposed in this paper allows the measurement and monitoring of fine dust, volatile organic compounds, carbon dioxide, etc., which are the biggest causes affecting the human body among air environmental pollution. The proposed system consisted of a device that measures atmospheric environment information, a server system for storing and analyzing measured information, an integrated monitoring management system for administrators and smart phone applications for users to enable visualization analysis of atmospheric environment information in real time. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed fine dust monitoring system based on the Internet of Things was verified by using the response speed of the system, the transmission speed of the sensor data, and the measurement error of the sensor. The fine dust monitoring system based on the Internet of Things proposed in this paper is expected to increase user convenience and efficiency of the system by visualizing the air pollution condition after measuring the air environment information with portable fine dust measuring device.

  • Although a scooter is a convenient transportation means for a short distance traveling with a light package in the congested urban center, it might be one of the significant sources of air pollutants to which many people can easily be exposed during its passing-by. In this paper, we measured concentrations of gases and particles emitted from a scooter at roadside with no other traffic. To understand the characteristics of scooter emissions with respect to driving speed (idling, 30 km/h) at the roadside, total particle number concentration, particle size distribution, average surface area of particles deposited in the alveolar region, and concentrations of black carbon, CO, and $NO_x$ were measured. The concentrations of the particle number, surface area of deposited particles, CO, and $NO_x$ were highly fluctuated in the scooter's idling condition. The trends of particle number concentration, CO, and $NO_x$ generation were similar to one another. When the scooter started to move, all of $NO_x$, CO and particle number concentrations increased and after it passed by at the speed of 30 km/h, the concentration peaks of the particles and gases appeared at the same time. Unimodal size distribution with ~70 and ~93 nm mode diameters was observed for the idling and cruising condition, respectively. From this work, we found that emission from a passing vehicle could be characterized using a roadside monitoring technique.
