Diagnosing the Condition of Air-conditioning Compressors by Analyzing the Waveform of the Raw AE Signal

  • To diagnosis abnormal compressor conditions in an air-conditioner, the acoustic emission (AE) signal, which is derived from wear condition, compressed air, and assembly error, was analyzed experimentally. Burst and continuous type AE signals resulted from metal contact and compressed air, and the raw AE signal of compressors was acquired in the production line. After extracting samples using waveforms, the Early Life Test (ELT) was conducted and the waveform was classified as normal or abnormal. Efficient parameters in the waveform pattern were investigated in time and frequency domains and a diagnosis algorithm for air-conditioners using Neural Network estimation is suggested.

An Experimental Study on the Performance of an Inverter Heat Pump with a Variation of Frequency and Refrigerant Charging Amount (인버터 열펌프의 주파수 및 냉매봉입량 변화에 따른 시스템 성능특성의 실험적 연구)

  • In the air-conditioning industry, the refrigerant charging amount is one of the most important parameters affecting the energy efficiency ratio of heat pumps. An experimental study was performed on the characteristics of an inverter driven air-to-air heat pump system with a variation of compressor frequency and charging amount of refrigerant. The frequency was altered from 40Hz to 70Hz and the charging amount was changed from 1.6kg to 2.8kg in tests. The variation of performance was measured with switching of the expansion valve on each frequency and charging amount. All the tests were performed at the Korean Standard and test conditions of the air conditioners. As results, it was found that there existed the charging amount and the level of the suction gas superheat which provided the highest energy efficiency ratio at all the frequency bands.

  • With today's global environmental and energy problems, high expectations exist for solar power generation to reduce carbon dioxide generated by the consumption of fossil fuels. On the other hand, power consumption in residential homes is increasing every year. Among the many household appliances, the power demand for air conditioners increases dramatically during the summer, particularly in the afternoons. As this pattern closely matches the output pattern of solar cells, it should be possible to combine a photovoltaic array with an air conditioner to decrease the energy consumption within the home. We have developed a residential solar-powered air conditioner that operates through a combination of photovoltaic array and commercial power. In this paper, the configuration and specification of the residential solar-powered system are described to a novel high efficiency inverter using a ZVCS boost converter. And the performance evaluations of the solar-powered air conditioner are examined by the analysis of a new tracking controller with a maximum power $P_{max}$ detection of solar cell.

Cycle Simulation of a Desiccant Cooling System with a Regenerative Evaporative Cooler (재생형 증발식 냉각기를 이용한 제습 냉방시스템의 성능해석)

  • Comparison of the cooling performance is provided between the desiccant cool-ing systems incorporating a direct evaporative cooler and a regenerative evaporative cooler, respectively. Cycle simulation is conducted, and the cooling capacity and COP are evaluated at various temperature and humidity conditions. The COP of the system with a regenerative evaporative cooler and the regeneration temperature of 6$0^{\circ}C$ is evaluated 0.65 at the outdoor air condition of 35$^{\circ}C$ and 40% RH. This value is found about 3.4 times larger than that of the system with a direct evaporative cooler. Furthermore, incorporating a regenerative evaporative cooler eliminates the need for deep dehumidification in a desiccant dehumidifier that is necessary to achieve low air temperature in the system with a direct evaporative cooler. Subsequently, the regenerative evaporative cooler enables the use of low temperature heat source to regenerate the dehumidifier permitting the desiccant cooling system more beneficial compared with other thermal driven air conditioners.

  • An experimental study using a psychrometric calorimeter was conducted to investigate the temperature and pressure mea surement errors permitted for determining cooling capacity of an air conditioner. First, the instrument calibration was made in accordance with the related test methods and guidelines in order to accurately evaluate basic performance (cooling capacity and airs flow rate). Secondly, a parametric study was performed to examine the effect of measurement error involved if temperature and pressure measuring instruments on the cooling capacity calculation. From the results, it was found that the degree of accuracy for both temperature and pressure measurements played an important role on the error occurring in the determination of cooling capacity and needed to be maintained within a certain value to guarantee required accuracy of cooling capacity.

An Experimental Study on Condensation Characteristics at Various Condensation Pressure of R407C (응축압력 변화에 따른 R407C의 응축특성에 관한 연구)

  • R407C is considered as alternative refrigerant of R22 for air conditioners. Experimental investigation is made to study the condensation heat transfer characteristics of slit fin-tube heat exchanger using alternative refrigerant, R407C. Experiments are carried out at condensation pressure of 2110 kPa and 1943 kPa with the degree of superheat of 1$0^{\circ}C$ and mass flux varying from 150 to 250 kg/$m^2$s for refrigerant side. The inlet air condition is dry bulb temperature of 35$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 50% and air velocity varying from 0.8 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments show that pressure drop gets smaller at a higher condensation pressure especially when condensation pressure is raised from 1943 to 2110 kPa. Heat transfer rate gets smaller at a lower condensation pressure in the range of experimental condition.

Effects of the Temperature Glide and Superheat of R407C on the Performance of Evaporator (R407C의 온도구배와 과열도가 증발기 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • R407C is considered as an alternative refrigerant of R22 for air conditioners. An experiment was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop for refrigerant R407C flowing in a fin-and-tube heat exchanger used for commercial air-conditioning unit. The experimental data were useful in analyze the effects of the temperature glide and superheat for R407C. Test were conducted at the conditions of inlet refrigerant evaporation temperature of 7$^{\circ}C$, inlet air relative humidity of 50%, and refrigerant mass fluxes varying from 150 to 250 kg/m$^2$s. Representative results show that the heat exchanger performance for R407C evaporation is significantly affected by the change of the flow pattern from two-phase to super-heated vapor flow.

Development of the Dynamic Simulation Program for the Multi-Inverter Heat Pump Air-Conditioner (멀티 인버터 히트펌프의 동특성 해석 프로그램의 개발)

  • A dynamic simulation model was developed to analyse the transient characteristics of a multi-inverter heat pump. The programs included a basic air conditioning system such as a evaporator, condenser, compressor, linear electronic expansion valve (LEV) and by-pass circuit. The theoretical model was derived from mass conservation and energy conservation equations to predict the performance of the multi-inverter heat pump at various operating conditions. Calculated results were compared with the values obtained from the experiments at different operation frequencies of compressor, area of the LEV and configuration of indoor units operation. The results of the simulation model showed a good agreement with the experimental ones, so that the model could be used as an efficient tool for thermodynamic design and control factor design of air-conditioners.

Identification of Noise Sources in Scroll Compressor for Air-Conditioner

  • Low noise of air-conditioners is one of the most important issues because of the users' strong demand. The main source of noise in an air-conditioner is the compressor. Therefore, noise reduction in a compressor is quite significant as an element technology in the air-conditioner field. Recently, scroll compressors are widely used, because they feature low noise, due to less pulsation of gas pressure, than that of rotary compressors. For reduction of noise, the source of noise must be identified. This paper presents a detailed analysis to identify the noise source and shows the dominant factors of noise of the scroll compressor, which will make it possible to design a scroll compressor with low noise.

  • Nowadays, with urban railway vehicles, refrigeration has been used for a long time as an air conditioner including a heating apparatus and a ventilator. Regarding saveenergy, there are lots of researches continually on the refrigeration field to reduce the parts' weight, improve the parts' efficiency and make good looking design of air conditioners. Moreover, we are able to see the recent achievement of the researches. As a result, through this research we improve the quality of inner air with the urban railway system and make a domestic HVAC system by technical development of high capacity air conditioner and the principal parts.
