The present work is an experimental investigation on potential operating range using directly injected gasoline fuel in a single-cylinder compression ignition (CI) engine. The objectives of present study were to apply auto-ignited combustion to gasoline fuel and to evaluate potential operating range. In order to auto-ignite gasoline fuel in CI engine, the fuel direct-injection system and the intake air system were modified that a flow rate and temperature of intake air were regulated. The heat-release rate (HRR), net indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), start of combustion (SOC), and combustion duration were derived from in-cylinder pressure data in a test engine, which has 373.33cc displacement volume and 17.8 compression ratio. The exhaust emission characteristics were obtained emission gas analyzer and smoke meter on the exhaust line system.
The use of river water as a heat source of a heat pump has the advantage in the performance compared to the use of atmospheric air because the temperature variation of river water over the year is relatively small. In this study, the performance of the heat pump system using river water as a heat source was numerically investigated. A simulation model for the 2-stage compression heat pump system was developed with each component model composed of compressors, heat exchangers, a flash tank and electronic expansion devices. The peformance of the heat pump system using river water was improved by $50\%$ compared to that using atmospheric air in winter conditions.
In this study, the coefficient of performance of a vapour compression heat pump system was analyzed for the evaluation of the heat pump performance. A water-to-air heat pump was assembled and tested by changing the level of the compressor driving speed and the air mass flow rate during air heating process. The coefficient of performance for air heating was 2.6~3.8 and that for water cooling was 1.0~1.4. The coefficient of performance was not depending on the levels of the compressor driving speed or levels of the air mass flow rate, but on the temperature of the air and water. The coefficient of performance for air heating increased by about 0.2 with the water temperature increasing by 1$^{\circ}C$.
The objective of this study is to investigate the performance of a two-stage compression heat pump system for district heating. The experimental setup of heat pump consists of compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion device, intercooler, flash tank, oil separator and accumulator. The experimental evaluations on the two-stage compression cycle were carried out under various operating conditions which were heat source temperature, the degree of compressor inlet superheat, and intermediate pressure. The temperature ranges of unutilized energy as the heat source were used in the test conditions. As the heat source temperature increased from $10^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$, the COP and heating capacity of the heat pump system increased by 22.6% and 45.8%, respectively. The performance of the two-stage heat pump system increased by 5.2% with the variation of the intermediate pressure in the same heat source temperature conditions.
This study was carried out to assess the dimensional stability of wood material treated by plastic processing for bentwood and compression wood. The evaluation method was different between two wood materials, but the treatments for them were very similar to each other. One of the main methods is heat treatment with sufficient water vapor. In bentwood, the used species were painted maple (Acer mono), bitter wood (Picrasma quassioides) and birch (Betula schmidtii). Steaming was the worst treatment method for dimensional stabilization of bentwood. The best results could be attained with PEG treatment for dimensional stabilization of bentwood. Dimensional stability of bitter wood was found to be conspicuous. However the steaming treatment at lower temperatures, i.e., about $130^{\circ}C$ was not suitable for dimensional stability of bentwood. In compression wood, the used specimen was Italian poplar wood (Populus euramericana). Two heat compressive pressing conditions, an open-press system and an air-tighten closed-press system, were used. The recovery rate was measured after boiling and/or absorbing in water to estimate the dimensional stability of heat compressed wood. The best dimensional stability of compressed wood in the air-tighten closed-press system was found to be better at $200^{\circ}C$ than $180^{\circ}C$. The best compression rate for dimensional stability was 73 percent.
Since the cooling performance of a $CO_2$ cooling cycle is varied significantly with a variation of refrigerant charge amount and outdoor temperature, the reliability of $CO_2$ system is down. In this study, the performance characteristics of three kinds of $CO_2$ systems were measured and analyzed by varying refrigerant charge amount and outdoor temperature so as to study the characteristics of variation with cycle option. The applied system options are the single-stage compression(1C-1E) system, two-stage compression with 1-EEV(2C-1E) system, and two-stage compression with 2-EEV(2C-2E) system. The performances of two-stage compression with 2-EEV system were less sensitive than those of other systems and the system operated safely and steadily for wide charge amount. The performance of the two-stage compression with 1-EEV(2C-1E) system was the most sensitive to the charge amount, and that of the single-stage compression(1C-1E) system varied a lot with outdoor temperature.
The cooling performance of a transcritical $CO_2$ cycle varies significantly with a variation of refrigerant charge amount. In this study, the performance of the $CO_2$ system was measured and analyzed by varying refrigerant charge amount with a change of cycle option. The applied cycle options are the single-stage compression system, two-stage compression with 1-EEV system, and two-stage compression with 2- EEV system. The optimum normalized charge were 0.363, 0.297, and 0.282 for the two-stage compression with 2-EEV system, two-stage compression with 1-EEV system, and single-stage compression system, respectively.
A technical analysis was conducted to predict the development trend for heat pump system. The study was based on a submitted patent from 1983 to 2002 in Korea, U.S.A. and Japan. The total number of raw data from the registered database was 19,261 and the obtained data to be analyzed through the filtering process was 5,143. Technical development of compression type heat pump was more dominant than the other types, absorption, adsorption, and chemical heat pump. The patents for compression type made up over $80\%$ in each country, Most of patents were developed for the defrosting and controlling technology of the compression type heat pump system. Approximately $24\%\;and\;62\%$ of the patents about compression type heat pump were for defrosting and control technologies, respectively.

To keep the superconducting (SC) magnet coils of KSTAR at proper operating conditions, not only the coils but also other cold components, such as thermal shields (TS), magnet structures, SC bus-lines (BL), and current leads (CL) must be maintained at their respective cryogenic temperatures. A helium refrigeration system (RRS) with an exergetic equivalent cooling power of 9 kW at 4.5 K without liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) pre-cooling has been manufactured and installed. The main components of the KST AR helium refrigeration system (HRS) can be classified into the warm compression system (WCS) and the cryogenic devices according to the operating temperature levels. The process helium is compressed from 1 bar to 22 bar passing through the WCS and is supplied to cryogenic devices. The main components of cryogenic devices are consist of cold box (C/B) and distribution box (D/B). The C/B cool-down and make the various cryogenic helium for the KSTAR Tokamak and the various cryogenic helium is distributed by the D/B as per the KSTAR requirement. In this proceeding, we will present the commissioning results of the KSTAR HRS. Circuits which can simulate the thermal loads and pressure drops corresponding to the cooling channels of each cold component of KSTAR have been integrated into the helium distribution system of the HRS. Using those circuits, the performance and the capability of the HRS, to fulfill the mission of establishing the appropriate operating condition for the KSTAR SC magnet coils, have been successfully demonstrated.
The objective of this study is to predict optimal intermediate pressure of a 2-stage compression heat pump system using river water. To determine the maximum performance of the 2-stage compression heat pump system, the experimental evaluations on the 2-stage compression cycle were carried out under various operating conditions. Electronic expansion valves were applied to control intermediate pressure and superheat. Based on the experimental data, an empirical correlation for predicting optimal intermediate pressure which considering cycle operating parameters was developed. The present correlation was verified by comparing the predicted data with the measured data. The predictions showed a good agreement with the measured data within a relative deviation of ${\pm}4%$ at various operating conditions.
