In this paper, a new air bearing stage with magnetic preload and a linear motor has been developed for the small precision machine systems. The new air bearing stage is unique in the sense that permanent magnets attached bottom of the iron core of table are used not only for preloading air bearings in vertical direction but also for generating thrust force by current of the coil at base. The characteristics of air bearings using porous pads were analyzed with numerical method, and the magnetic circuit model was derived for linear motor for calculating required preload force and thrust force. A prototype of single axis miniature stage with size of $120(W){\times}120(L){\times}50(H)\;mm^3$ was designed and fabricated and examined its performances, vertical stiffness, load capacity, thrust force and positioning resolution.
The inlet pressure build-up at the leading edge of bearings which have discontinuous lubrication surface is analyzed theoretically. The analyses of Inlet pressure build-up is obtained by means of full Navier-stokes equations. Beam-warming method is used to solve navier-stokes equations. The results show that inlet pressure is above atmosphere pressure in front of leading edge of hearing.
For the accurate run-out of a light rotor shaft the sliding bearings supplied with externally pressurized air are effectively applied, and it is important to predict the static and dynamic characteristics of rotor-bearing system. In this study direct numerical method is applied to solve the perturbed Reynolds' equation. To solve it the perturbed dimensionless mass flow rate is used as the boundary condition under the inherently-compensated restrictor. The dynamic characteristics of a rotor supported in the externally pressurized air bearings are analyzed, and as a result the orbit of the journal center is calculated. The theoretical results are investigated and discussed.
The heat generation of angular contact ball bearings and deep groove ball bearings is studied with experiment and simulation. The temperature variation of inner, outer races and the temperature incresement distribution are measured by using thermocouples for the shaft speed, preload, viscosity of lubrucant and lubrication method. The measured values from experiment are used to estimate the heat generation rate. Oil-air lubrication using oils with different viscosities and grease lubrication are adopted.
Experiments were conducted to determine the structural static and dynamic characteristics of air foil bearings. The housing of the bearing on the journal was driven by an impact hammer which was used to simulate dynamic forces acting on the bump loll with various leading condition. Two different bump foils (Cu-coated bump and viscoelastic bump) were tested and the static and dynamic coefficients of two bump foils compared, based on the experimental measurements for a wide range of operating conditions. The static and dynamic characteristics of air foil bearings were extracted 0rpm the frequency response function by least square method and IV(Instrumental Variable) method. The experiment was tested at 0rpm and $10,000\~16,000rpm$, and loaded on $50\~150N$. From the test results, the possibility of the application of high load and high speed condition is suggested.
In this paper, we proposes a study on air gap control for magnetic levitation of transverse flux permanent magnet electromagnets. In general, mechanical systems have a high failure rate of bearings. Bearings in particular are problematic because they have high surface wear rate and degradations. To solve this problem, replacing the bearing with a magnetic levitation electromagnet system can provide lightweight and efficiency improvements. However, precise air gap control is essential to control the magnetic levitation electromagnet system. Therefore, in this paper, we identify the instable cause of gap control through a mathematical modeling and verify through experiment a control algorithm that can use compensation.
In the case of a cooled air cooling applied to angular contact ball bearings in a high speed spindle unit, the heat generated heat in bearings is removed and the temperature of inner ring is decreased.. Therefore it is possible to increase the speed of spindle units.
The feasibility of an oil-free, motor-driven, two-stage centrifugal compressor supported by air bump bearings is investigated. This centrifugal compressor is driven by a 75 kW motor at an operating speed of 39,000 RPM, and a pressure ratio of the compressor is set up to 4. The analysis is performed by using bearing equilibrium position, heaving stillness, Campbell diagram, unbalance response, and stability. It is demonstrated in this paper that air bump bearings can be adopted well to an oil-free, motor-driven, centrifugal compressor. Specially, Cu-coated bump bearings have enough damping force to reduce a synchronous unbalance for rigid modes of the two-stage compressor. Futhermore, this concept may be applied to the flexible rotor system such as high speed turbomachinery with a super critical speed.
Foil bearings have been successfully used for small high speed rotors, such as ACM(Air Cycle Machine), turbo charger, turbo compressor, high speed motor, etc. Recently advanced researches are concentrated on the high load capacity and the extreme temperature foil bearings to extend the application boundary. Some bearings are already adopted into cryogenic machines and micro gas turbines. In this paper, a foil journal bearing designed for high load capacity, which is under development, is introduced. The bearing is for the turbo refrigerator which has a rotor of 18${\~}$25 kgf rotating at 23,000${\~}$38,000 rpm. This application is well beyond conventional spectrum of foil bearings because the rotor is relatively heavy and the rotational speed is low. Therefore, the development is challenging. The foil bearing is a bump type, the size is 60mm in diameter and 50mm in length, the operating fluid is air and rotational speed is 26,000 rpm. In-house software was developed and used for bearing design. Tested maximum load capacity is 80kgf, 0.62 in terms of load capacity coefficient, and testing is being continued.
As fuel cell system is environmental friendly generator, its performance depends on its air supply system. Because, fuel cell stack generates electrical energy by electron and the electron is generated by reacting between air and hydrogen. So, more and more compressed air is supplied, more and more the energy can be obtained. In this study, turbo-expander supported by air foil bearing is introduced as the air supply system used by fuel cell systems. The turbo-expander is a turbo machine which operates at high speed, so air foil bearings suit its purpose for the bearing elements. Analysis for confirming the stability and endurance is conducted. Based on FDM and Newton-Raphson method, characteristics of air foil bearing, dynamic coefficients, pressure field and load capacity, are obtained. Using the characteristics of air foil bearing, the rotordynamic analysis is performed by finite element method. The analysis (stability analysis and critical speed map) shows that turbo-expander is stability at running speed. After the analysis, the test process and results are presented. The goals of test are running up to 90,000 RPM, flow rate of 150 $m^3/h$ and pressure ratio of 1.15. The test results show that the aerodynamic performance and stability of turbo-expander are satisfied to the primary goals.
