Changes in land use and increase in urban energy consumption influence urban life. This study analyzed the characteristics and patterns of urban heat and presents management schemes to generate a comfortable and sustainable urban environment. The study aimed to demonstrate the positive effects of artificial ground greening on improving the microclimate through evapotranspiration using perennial herbs. We have designed a chamber that could control constant temperature and humidity, measure temperature reductions in each plant and changes in sensible heat and latent heat. This study identified Sedum kamtschaticum as the most effective plant in controlling temperature. At $22^{\circ}C$, $3.2^{\circ}C$ temperature reduction was observed, whereas four other plants showed a $1.5^{\circ}C$ reduction. At $25^{\circ}C$, $2.0^{\circ}C$ temperature reduction was observed. On the other hand, the use of Sedum sarmentosum resulted in the lowest effect. Zoysia japonica is the most commonly used ground covering plant, although the temperature reduction of Lysimachia nummularia was more effective at high temperature conditions. Sensible heat and latent heat were calculated to evaluate the thermal performance of energy. At a temperature >$30^{\circ}C$, L. nummularia and S. sarmentosum emitted high latent heat. In this study, we analyzed the thermal performance of green roof perennial plants; in particular, we analyzed the evapotranspiration and temperature reduction of each plant. Since the substrate depth and types, plant species, and seasonal change may influence temperature reduction and latent heat of green roofs, further studies are necessary.

Generally, the tire curing process is the process in which the sulfur is added and subsequently the tire is heated to give the tire elasticity. In this process, all kinds of the chemicals in the tire are emitted with a lot of heat. The chemical fume and heat aggravate the work environment. To solve this problem, 92 local exhaust ventilators and 8 gravity ventilators were used, but not satisfactory yet. Preliminary survey showed that the temperatures in the process were very high: 30.3, 32.9 and $37.2^{\circ}C$ at 2, 4 and 6m above the ground level, respectively in the winter (outside temperature was $2^{\circ}C$). It can be imagined that the process is severely hot in the summer time. The higher temperature distribution in the higher space tells us that the hot plume could not be removed with the existing ventilation systems. Therefore, in this study, some alternative ventilation systems were designed. The partitions were used to contain the hot plume to increase the capture efficiency. The gravity ventilators were newly designed to improve the extraction efficiency of hot fume. To satisfy the balance of pressure in the curing process, some supply air system was introduced by renewing the existing air conditioning system. Many alternative solutions were evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics modelling. The best and applicable solution was selected and the existing ventilation system was modified. After implementing the new ventilation system, the hot environment was much improved. The temperature reduction in the curing process was about $6.4^{\circ}C$.
The calculation method of ground heat exchange in greenhouses has different ideas in each design standard, so there is a big difference in each method according to the size of greenhouses, it is necessary to establish a more accurate method that can be applied to the domestic. In order to provide basic data for the formulation of the calculation method of greenhouse heating load, we measured the soil temperature distribution and the soil heat flux in three plastic greenhouses of different size and location during the heating period. And then the calculation methods of ground heat exchange in greenhouses were reviewed. The soil temperature distributions measured in the heating greenhouse were compared with the indoor air temperature, the results showed that soil temperatures were higher than room temperature in the central part of greenhouse, and soil temperatures were lower than room temperature in the side edge of greenhouse. Therefore, it is determined that the ground heat gain in the central part of greenhouse and the perimeter heat loss in the side edge of greenhouse are occurred, there is a difference depending on the size of greenhouse. Introducing the concept of heat loss through the perimeter of building and modified to reflect the size of greenhouse, the calculation method of ground heat exchange in greenhouses is considered appropriate. It was confirmed that the floor heat loss measured by using soil heat flux sensors increased linearly in proportion to the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor. We derived the reference temperature difference which change the direction of ground heat flow and the perimeter heat loss factor from the measured heat flux results. In the heating design of domestic greenhouses, reference temperature differences are proposed to apply $12.5{\sim}15^{\circ}C$ in small greenhouses and around $10^{\circ}C$ in large greenhouses. Perimeter heat loss factors are proposed to apply $2.5{\sim}5.0W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$ in small greenhouses and $7.5{\sim}10W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$ in large greenhouses as design standard data.
The temperature of the upper thermosphere is generally varied with the solar activity, and largely with geomagnetic activity in the high latitude. The data analyzed in this study are acquired at two ground stations, Thule Air Base($76,5{deg} N, 68.4{deg} W, A = 86{deg}$) and $S{psi}ndre Str{psi}mfjord (67.0{deg} N, 50.9{deg} W, A = 74{deg}$), Greenland. Both stations are located in the high latitude not only geographically but also geomagnetically. The terrestrial night glow at 6300 ${angs}$ from atomic oxygen has been observed from the two ground-based Fabry-Perot interferometers, during periods of 1986~1991 in Thule Air Base and 1986~1994 in $S{psi}ndre Str{psi}mfjord$. Some features noted in this study are as follows: (1) The correlation between the solar activity and the measured thermospheric temperature is highest in the case of $3{leq}Kp{leq}4$ in Thule, and increases with the geomagnetic activity in $S{psi}ndre Str{psi}mfjord$. (2) The measured temperatures at Thule is generally higher than those at $S{psi}ndre Str{psi}mfjord$, but the latter shows steeper slope with the solar activity. (3) The harmonic analysis shows that the diurnal variation(24hrs) is the main feature of the daily temperature variation with a temperature peak at about 13-14 LT (LT=UT-4). However, the semi-diurnal variation is evident during the period of weak solar activity. (4) Generally the predicted temperatures from both MSIS86 and VSH models are lower than the measured temperature, and this discrepancy grows as the solar activity increases. Therefore, we urge modelers to develope a new thermospheric model utilizing broader sets of measurements, especially for high solar activity.
Objective: This paper presents a study to evaluate the WBGT index for assessing the effects of a wide range of outdoor weather conditions on human responses. Background: The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index was firstly developed for the assessment of hot outdoor conditions. It is a recognised index that is used world-wide. It may be useful over a range of outdoor conditions and not just for hot climates. Method: Four group experiments, involving people performing a light stepping activity, were conducted to determine human responses to outside conditions in the U.K. They were conducted in September 2007 (autumn), December 2007 (winter), March 2008 (spring) and June 2008 (summer). Environmental measurements included WBGT, air temperature, radiant temperature (including solar load), humidity and wind speed all measured at 1.2m above the ground, as well as weather data measured by a standard weather station at 3m to 4m above the ground. Participants' physiological and subjective responses were measured. When the overall results of the four seasons are considered, WBGT provided a strong prediction of physiological responses as well as subjective responses if aural temperature, heart rate and sweat production were measured. Results: WBGT is appropriate to predict thermal strain on a large group of ordinary people in moderate conditions. Consideration should be given to include the WBGT index in warning systems for a wide range of weather conditions. However, the WBGT overestimated physiological responses of subjects. In addition, tenfold Borg's RPE was significantly different with heart rate measured for the four conditions except autumn (p<0.05). Physiological and subjective responses over 60 minutes consistently showed a similar tendency in the relationships with the $WBGT_{head}$ and $WBGT_{abdomen}$. Conclusion: It was found that either $WBGT_{head}$ or $WBGT_{abdomen}$ could be measured if a measurement should be conducted at only one height. The relationship between the WBGT values and weather station data was also investigated. There was a significant relationship between WBGT values at the position of a person and weather station data. For UK daytime weather conditions ranging from an average air temperature of $6^{\circ}C$ to $21^{\circ}C$ with mean radiant temperatures of up to $57^{\circ}C$, the WBGT index could be used as a simple thermal index to indicate the effects of weather on people. Application: The result of evaluation of WBGT might help to develop the smart clothing for workers in industrial sites and improve the work environment in terms of considering workers' wellness.

Recently, hexagonal manganites have attracted much attention because of the coexistence of ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. The crystal structure of hexagonal manganites consists of $MnO_5$ polyhedra in which $Mn^{3+}$ ion is surrounded by three oxygen atoms in plane and two apical oxygen ions. The Mn ions within Mn-O plane form a triangular lattice and couple the spins through the AFM superexchange interaction. Due to incomplete AFM coupling between neighboring Mn ions in the triangular lattice, the system forms a geometrically-frustrated magnetic state. Among hexagonal manganites, $YMnO_3$, in particular, is the best known experimentally since the f states are empty. In addition, for applications, $YMnO_3$ thin films have been known as promising candidates for non-volatile ferroelectric random access memories. However, $YMnO_3$ has low magnetic order temperature (~70 K) and A-type AFM structure, which hinders its applications. We have synthesized $YMn1_{-x}Cr_xO_3$ (x = 0, 0.05 and 0.1) samples by the conventional solid-state reaction. The powders of stoichiometric proportions were mixed, and calcined at $900^{\circ}C$ for $YMn1_{-x}Cr_xO_3$ for 24 h. The obtained powders were ground, and pressed into 5-mm-thick disks of 1/2-inch diameter. The disks were directly put into the oven, and heated up to $1,300^{\circ}C$ and sintered in air for 24 h. The phase of samples was checked at room temperature by powder x-ray diffraction using a Rigaku Miniflex diffractometer with Cu $K{\alpha}$ radiation. All the magnetization measurements were carried out with a superconducting quantum-interference-device magnetometer. Our experiments point out that the Cr-doped samples show the characteristics of a spin-glass state at low temperatures.

In this study, zinc germanate ($Zn_2GeO_4$) thin films has been synthesized by using radio frequency magnetron sputtering and the divalent manganese-activated luminescence was characterized. X-ray diffraction patterns of the as-deposited $Zn_2GeO_4$:Mn films showed only a broad feature, indicative of an amorphous structure. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the as-deposited $Zn_2GeO_4$:Mn has a smooth surface morphology. The $Zn_2GeO_4$:Mn films were found to be crystallized by annealing in air ambient at temperatures as low as $700^{\circ}C$. The annealed $Zn_2GeO_4$:Mn possessed a rhombohedral polycrystalline structure. The broad-band photoluminescent emission spectrum from 470 to 650nm was obtained at room temperature from the $Zn_2GeO_4$:Mn films. The emission peak was centered at around 535nm in the green range, which originates from the intrashell transition of manganese $3d^5$ electrons from $^4T_1$ excited-state level to the $^6A_1$ ground state. The PL emission spectrum had an asymmetric line shape, which results from the $^3d_5$ electron transitions of divalent manganese ions located at different sites of the zinc germanate host crystal lattice. Electroluminescent devices were fabricated using $Zn_2GeO_4$:Mn as an emission layer. The fabricated devices showed a green EL emission similar to the PL emission. The CIE chromaticity color coordinates of the EL emission were determined to be x=0.308 and y=0.657.
The resistance against drying of mulberry (Morus alba L.) graftages lifted in the fall and spring was examined by measuring water loss, survival, and regrowth. The graftages were exposed on the ground an4 covered with 2 sheets of straw mat for 0, 1, 3, 6, 10, and 15 days. 1. Temperatures in the mat ranged from 13 to -6.5$^{\circ}C$ in fall and 24 to -2.8$^{\circ}C$ in spring. Relative humidity was 37 to 100% in fall and 20 to 100% in spring. 2. Water loss from the graftages was less than 10% after 10 days exposure in fall, whereas there was 9.8% loss with 1 day exposure in spring. 3. Six days exposure in the spring caused the root hairs to dry and the root surface to become wrinkled longitudinally and turn yellowish-red. 4. Maximum exposure which allowed 100% survival and regrowth after planting was 6 days in fall and 3 days in spring under 2 sheets of straw mat.
This study was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of white shading agent for reduction of greenhouse air temperature and to develop cost-effective cooling strategies for strawberry seedling production during hot seasons. Experiment results showed that solar radiation ($W/m^2$) was reduced by 14~17% and 33~37% for 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments, respectively, in black shading net treatment solar radiation was reduced by 39~44% compared to non-shaded treatment. Measured greenhouse air temperatures in 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments were $38.4^{\circ}C$ and $36.5^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas in black shading net covered greenhouses air temperature was $35.1^{\circ}C$, thereby 35% and 15% shading treatments showed 3.3 and $1.9^{\circ}C$ higher air temperatures than black net shading treatment. Crown diameter of strawberry plants in black net shading treatment was 7.5mm, and in 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments were 8.6mm and 8.3mm, respectively. Strawberry transplants grown in 35% white wash shading treatment produced the highest above ground fresh weight(7.8g), followed by 15% white wash shading(6.7g) and black net shading treatments(5.8g). Also, both 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments produced higher root fresh weight(4.1g and 4.3g) compare to black net shading treatments(2.7g).

This study was to investigate the user's thermal environments of the children's parks according to pavements and sunscreen types during periods of heat waves. The measurements were conducted at the sand pits, rubber chip pavement, shelters, and green shade ground of the two children's parks located in Jinju, Korea(Chilam: $N\;35^{\circ}11^{\prime}1.4{^{\prime}^{\prim}}$, $E\;128^{\circ}5^{\prime}31.7{^{\prime}^{\prime}}$, elevation 38m, Gaho: $N\;35^{\circ}09^{\prime}56.8{^{\prime}^{\prime}}$, $E\;128^{\circ}6^{\prime}41.1{^{\prime}^{\prime}}$, elevation 24m) over three days during 11-13, August, 2016. The highest ambient air temperatures at the Jinju Meteorological Office during the three measurement days were $35.9{\sim}36.8^{\circ}C$, which corresponded with the extremely hot weather. A series of experiments measured air temperature, relative humidity, wind velocity, black globe temperature, and long-wave and short-wave radiation of the six directions 0.6 m above ground level. The wet bulb globe temperature(WBGT) and the universal thermal climatic index(UTCI) were used to evaluate thermal stress. Surface temperature images of the play equipment were also taken using infrared thermography. Surface temperatures of the play equipment and grounds were used to evaluate burn risk through contact with playground materials. The results showed the following. The maximum air temperatures averaged over 1-hour period for three days were $36.6{\sim}39.4^{\circ}C$. The sun shades reduced those temperatures by up to $2.8^{\circ}C$(green shade) and $1.0^{\circ}C/2.3^{\circ}C$(shelters). The minimum relative humidity values averaged over 1-hour period for three days were 44~50%. The sun shades increased those humidity values by up to 6%(green shade) and 4%/6%(shelters). The risk of heat related illness at the measurement sites of the children's parks were extreme and high in the daytime hours. The maximum WBGT values averaged over a 30-minute period for three days were $31.2{\sim}33.6^{\circ}C$. The sun shades reduced those WBGT values by up to $2.4^{\circ}C$(green shade) and $0.5^{\circ}C/2.1^{\circ}C$(shelters) compared to sandpits, but would not block the risk of heat related illness in the daytime hours. The category of heat stress at the measurement sites of the children's parks were extreme and very strong in the daytime hours. The maximum UTCI values averaged over a 30-minute period for three days were $39.9{\sim}48.1^{\circ}C$. The sun shades reduced those UTCI values by up to $7.8^{\circ}C$(green shade) and $4.1^{\circ}C/8.2^{\circ}C$(shelters) compared to sandpits, but could not lower heat stress category from extreme and very strong to strong and moderate in the daytime hours. According to the burn threshold criteria when skin was in contact with playground materials, the maximum surface temperature of the stainless steels($70.8^{\circ}C$) surpassed three seconds $60^{\circ}C$ threshold for uncoated steel, that of the rubber chip($76.5^{\circ}C$) surpassed five seconds $74^{\circ}C$ threshold for the plastic, that of the plastic slide($68.5^{\circ}C$) and seats($71.0^{\circ}C$) surpassed the one min $60^{\circ}C$ threshold for plastic, respectively. The surface temperatures of shaded play equipment were lower approximately $20^{\circ}C$ than those of play equipment exposed to the sun. Therefore, sun shades can block the risk of burns in daytime hours. Because of the extreme and high risk of heat related illness and extreme and high heat stress at the children's parks during periods of heat waves, parents and administrators must protect children from the use of playgrounds. The risk of burn when contact with play equipments and grounds at the children's parks during periods of heat waves, was very high. The sun shades are essential to block the risk of burn from play equipments and grounds at the children's parks during heat waves.
