This study was monitored for 14 pesticide residues in agricultural products for the army, such as fruit vegetables(pepper, cucumber, pumpkin, melon and water melon), leafy vegetables(Korean cabbage, spinach, lettuce, crown daisy, cabbage, green onion), mushrooms(agaric, p'yogo), and bean sprouts produced in Kyunggi-do and Inchon-City. From January to December 2005, ten carbamate pesticides in 356 samples were analyzed by HPLC. One kind of pesticide was detected in 8 samples of detection rate (2.53%), and two pesticides were in one sample of detection rate(0.27%). Aldicarb, bendiocarb, fenobucarb, methiocarb, isoprocarb, and propoxur were not found in all samples. Detection rates of pesticides were 0.84% for methomyl, 0.56% for carbofuran, 0.56% for ethiofencarb, and 0.28% for carbayl. Dectection ranges of pesticides were from 0.01 to 2.9 mg/kg for ethiofencarb, from 0.1 to 0.23 mg/kg for methomyl, from 0.20 to 0.24 mg/kg for carbofuran, and 0.01 mg/kg for carbaryl, respectively. Consequently, detection levels of all pesticides in samples were less than the maximum residue limits(MRLs) in Korea representing that all agricultural products for the army were safe.
Truncated form of UBP1, an ubiquitin-specific protease of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was overexpressed in Escherichia coli. The hexahistidine residue $(His_6)$ was fused to the N-terminus of truncated UBP1 and the corresponding recombinant protein was purified with high yield by immobilized metal affinity chromatography. The truncated form of UBP1 protein was functional to cleave ubiquitinated human growth hormone as substrate. Effects of pH and temperature were investigated in order to optimize deubiquitinating reactions for the truncated UBP1. Optimum temperature and pH for the cleavage reaction were $40^{\circ}C$ and pH 8.0, respectively.

In South Korea, 25 % of annual agricultural residues (11.64 million tons) are unused. The hydrophilicity, low lower heating value (LHV), and low energy density of agricultural residues can be obstacles for efficient usage. Torrefaction, a low temperature pyrolysis process, can be a solution to overcome these disadvantage of agricultural residues. In this study, agricultural residues such as bean stem, pepper stem, perilla stem, sorghum stem, acorn shell, and ginkgo shell are torrefied at 200, 230, and $250^{\circ}C$ and evaluated energy properties, respectively. The torrefaction can increase the LHV and energy density rate of agricultural residues from 3,331~4,444 kcal/kg to 4,166~5,830 kcal/kg and 20~30 %, respectively.
ABSTRACT-Agricultural products collected from the suburbs of Chuncheon in 1984 were analyzed for carbamate pesticides by GLC-NPD. O-tert-butyl phenyl methyl carbamate(BPMC) was detected in most samples and their residue levels in strawberry, tomato, cucumber, grape, apple and chinese cabbage were in the range of non-detectable to 0.2356 ppm(Av. 0.0539 ppm). 1- naphthyl methyl carbamate(N AC) were detected in cucumber, grape and chinese cabbage and their residue levels were in the range of non-detectable to 0.0265 ppm. O-cumeryl methyl carbamate(MIPC) was detected in only chinese cabbage and its residue levels were in the range of non-detectable to 0.0059 ppm. Detection frequencies of BPMC, MIPC and NAC in the chinese cabbage were higher than those the others.others.
We investigated the effects of the predominant lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on the fermentation characteristics and aerobic stability of total mixed ration (TMR) silage containing soybean curd residue (SC-TMR silage). The SC-TMR materials were ensiled in laboratory silos for 14 or 56 days. LAB predominant in SC-TMR silage were identified (Exp. 1). Lactobacillus fermentum (L. fermentum) and Streptococcus bovis (S. bovis) were found in the untreated materials, Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides (L. pseudomesenteroides) in 14-day silage and Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) in all silages. Pediococcus acidilactici (P. acidilactici), Lactobacillus paracasei (L. paracasei), and Lactobacillus brevis (L. brevis) formed more than 90% of the isolates in 56- day silage. Italian ryegrass and whole crop maize were inoculated with P. acidilactici and L. brevis isolates and the fermentation and aerobic stability determined (Exp. 2). Inoculation with P. acidilactici and L. brevis alone or combined improved the fermentation products in ryegrass silage and markedly enhanced its aerobic stability. In maize silage, P. acidilactici and L. brevis inoculation caused no changes and suppressed deterioration when combined with increases in acetic acid content. The results indicate that P. acidilactici and L. brevis may produce a synergistic effect to inhibit SC-TMR silage deterioration. Further studies are needed to identify the inhibitory substances, which may be useful for developing potential antifungal agents.
This research expands investigations into the biomass resource potential associated with California's food processing industry by surveying industries within a two county region in the San Joaquin Valley, California, USA. A previous survey conducted in 2005 for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) quantified residue and waste generation from food processors and food preparation businesses in the Sacramento region. The present survey investigates residue and waste streams from food processors located in Merced and Stanislaus Counties. Sixty food processors were identified to participate in the survey, of which 49 responded (82%) and data were acquired for 38 (63%) (6 facilities closed or moved, 8 decided not to participate). Within the two counties, total annual waste among survey respondents amounted to 24,044 dry tons of high moisture (${\geq}$60%) food residuals, 5,358 dry tons of low moisture (<60%) food residuals; and 23.7 million $m^3$ of wastewater containing 38,814 tons of biochemical oxygen demand ($BOD_5$). The total potential electric power generation from these food residues was estimated at approximately $7\;MW_e$. Total solid waste resource included in the survey response was estimated at about 10% of statewide residue generation for processors falling within the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System Major Group 20 (Food and Kindred Products) categories.
GRLs(Guidance Residue Levels) of agricultural chemicals for tobacco are recommended by the CORESTA Agro-Chemical Advisory Committee guide. In the GRLs list, organochlorine group is one of pesticides commonly used on tobacco cultivation. In this model study, the quantitative correlation in the transfer rate of pesticide residue into tobacco smoke by spiking of organochlorine pesticides to cigarette and pyrolysates were investigated. The spiking concentration referred to the range of GRLs list and the organochlorine pesticides in mainstream smoke were analyzed by GC-MS. For the understanding of the composition variation versus temperature, the behavior of pesticides was investigated by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(Py-GC-MS). In this study, the transfer rate of pesticide residue into tobacco smoke at four different spiking concentration and the composition of pyrolysates were analyzed differently. At $10\;{\mu}g/cig$ spiking concentrations, the organochlorine pesticides were transferred into tobacco smoke in $0.02\;{\sim}\;10.19\;%$ each of component and the most of pesticides were pyrolyzed during smoking. It was found that the decomposition compounds from organochlorine pesticides were mainly composed of oxygenated and nitrogenous compounds. This study could estimate that the transfer rate of pesticides into tobacco smoke is very small amount.

This study was carried out to investigate the pesticide residue pattern among different leafy vegetables applied with foliar spraying under greenhouse and to check extrapolating from some residue trial data to other minor crops. Leafy vegetables used in this study were: Mustard greens (Brassica juncea L.), Kale (Brassica oleracea L.), Dacheongchae (a kind of pak-choi (Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis L.)), Leaf broccoli (Brassica oleracea var alboglabra), Perilla leaf (Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton var. Frutescens), Leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris L. subsp. vulgaris) and Red leaf chicory (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum Hegi). These are cultivated all year under indoor or outdoor and cut the leaf from plant continuously during harvest time. The amounts of pesticide deposit in/on the continuous harvesting leafy vegetables were affected by the ratios of leaf area to weight. Ratio of perilla leaf was the largest among crops as 58 $cm^2/g$. The residue levels of 7 pesticides in/on perilla leaf were the highest than those of other crops through the statistical analysis from zero day to fifth day after last application. The representative crop in 8 crops was perilla leaf selected based on the amounts of daily consumption and the high residues. This study suggest that the continuous harvesting leafy greens should be separated from the one time harvesting leafy vegetables for the pesticide recommendations because of different harvesting habits and pre-harvest intervals.
This study was conducted to investigate residual organochlorine pesticides in green house soil and oriental melon, green pepper, and lettuce. The majority of them were designated as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by the international community at the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutant. Extraction and clean-up method were developed using the QuEChERS method for residual organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in soil and oriental melon, green pepper and lettuce. Recovery of OCPs in greenhouse soil and oriental melon, green pepper, and lettuce ranged from 73.3-110.6%. Limit of detection (LOD) of OCPs in soil and 3 crops were 0.01-0.08 and $0.11-0.17{\mu}g/kg$. The residues of OCPs in oriental melon, green pepper and lettuce greenhouse soil were analyzed by the developed method, and dieldrin, ${\beta}-endosulfan$ and endosulfan sulfate were detected at 1.4-72.5, 0.1-78.7 and $0.0-214.1{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. The detection frequency of 3 compounds in soils were 52 (29.7%), 34 (19.4%) and 57 (32.6%) among 175 samples, respectively. However, these compounds were not detected in all crop samples. The residue level in 3 crops were lower than 1/58.8 of maximum residue level of them. These results showed that the OCPs residue in oriental melon, green pepper, and lettuce greenhouse soil were not as high as crop safety threatening.
Fomesafen is a selective herbicide, and used to control annual and perennial broad-leaf grass on soybean and fruit fields in USA and China, but not introduced in Korea yet. So, MRL (Maximum Residue Level), and analytical method of fomesafen were not establishment in Korea. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to establish a determination method for fomesafen residue in crops using HPLC-UVD/MS. Fomesafen residue was extracted with acetone from representative samples of five raw products which comprised hulled rice, soybean, apple, green pepper, and Chinese cabbage. The extract was diluted with saline water, and dichloromethane partition was followed to recover fomesafen from the aqueous phase. Florisil column chromatography was additionally employed for final clean up of the extract. The fomesafen was quantitated by HPLC with UVD, using a Shiseido CAPCELL-PAK UG C18 column. The crops were fortified with fomesafen at 3 levels per crop. Mean recovery ratio were ranged from 87.5% for a 0.4 ppm in hulled rice to 102.5% for a 0.4 ppm in apple. The coefficients of variation were ranged from 0.6% for a 2.0 ppm in hulled rice to 7.7% for a 0.04 ppm in green pepper. Quantitative limit of fomesafen was 0.04 mg/kg in representative 5 crop samples. A LC/MS with selected-ion monitoring was also provided to confirm the suspected residue. Therefore, this analytical method was reproducible and sensitive enough to determine the residue of fomesafen in agricultural commodities.
