Region-Scaled Soil Erosion Assessment using USLE and WEPP in Korea

  • During the summer season, more than half of the annual precipitation in Korea occurs during the summer season due to the geographical location in the Asian monsoon belt. So, this causes severe soil erosion from croplands, which is directly linked to the deterioration of crop/land productivity and surface water quality. Therefore, much attention has been given to develop accurate estimation tools of soil erosion. The aim of this study is to assess the performance of using the empirical Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and the physical-based model of the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) to quantify eroded amount of soil from agricultural fields. Input data files, including climate, soil, slope, and cropping management, were modified to fit into Korean conditions. Chuncheon (forest) and Jeonju (level-plain) were selected as two Korean cities with different topographic characteristics for model analysis. The results of this current study indicated that better soil erosion prediction can be achieved using the WEPP model since it has better power to illustrate a higher degree of spatial variability than USLE in topography, precipitation, soils, and crop management practices. These present findings are expected to contribute to the development of the environmental assessment program as well as the conservation of the agricultural environment in Korea.

느타리버섯 자실체의 부위 및 생육시기별 지방산 조성의 변화 (Changes of Fatty Acid Composition by Various Developmental Stage and Fruit Body Section in Pleurotus ostreatus)

  • 느타리버섯(원형1호 느타리) 자실체의 부위별로 지방산 조성을 조사한 결과 linoleic acid는 갓부위에서 가장 높았고 대부위로 갈수록 낮아지는 경향이었고 stearic acid와 palmitic acid는 대부위로 갈수록 증가하는 경향이었다. 생육시기별 지방산조성은 oleic acid의 경우 버섯원기형성 후 $11{\sim}12$일 까지는 점차 증가하다가 이후부터는 감소하는 경향을 보였고 linoleic acid와 불포화지방산대비 포화지방산의 비율은 원기형성 후 $3{\sim}4$일까지는 증가하다가 그 후부터는 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다.

Selection of Optimal Vegetation Indices and Regression Model for Estimation of Rice Growth Using UAV Aerial Images

  • Recently Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology offers new opportunities for assessing crop growth condition using UAV imagery. The objective of this study was to select optimal vegetation indices and regression model for estimating of rice growth using UAV images. This study was conducted using a fixed-wing UAV (Model : Ebee) with Cannon S110 and Cannon IXUS camera during farming season in 2016 on the experiment field of National Institute of Crop Science. Before heading stage of rice, there were strong relationships between rice growth parameters (plant height, dry weight and LAI (Leaf Area Index)) and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) using natural exponential function ($R{\geq}0.97$). After heading stage, there were strong relationships between rice dry weight and NDVI, gNDVI (green NDVI), RVI (Ratio Vegetation Index), CI-G (Chlorophyll Index-Green) using quadratic function ($R{\leq}-0.98$). There were no apparent relationships between rice growth parameters and vegetation indices using only Red-Green-Blue band images.

Optimal Medium Conditions for the Detection of Cellulolytic Activity in Ganoderma lucidum

  • To determine the optimal medium conditions for the detection of the cellulolytic activity in Ganoderma lucidum, we varied three media conditions: dye reagent, pH, and temperature. First, we evaluated the use of four dyes, Congo Red, Phenol Red, Remazol Brilliant Blue, and Trypan Blue. To observe the effect of pH on the chromogenic reaction, we also made and tested various media spanning acidic and alkaline pHs, ranging from 4.5 to 8.0. Furthermore, in order to research the effect of temperature on the clear zone and the fungus growing zone, we tested temperatures ranging from 15 to $35{^{\circ}C}$. On the whole, the best protocol called for Ganoderma lucidum transfer onto media containing Congo red with pH adjusted to 7.0, followed by incubation at $25{^{\circ}C}$ for 5 days. Our results will be useful to researchers who aim to study extracellular enzyme activity in Ganoderma lucidum.

Fruitbody Development of Pleurotus ostreatus via Bottle Cultivation Using Recycled Substrate

  • This study was carried out to determine the possibility of bottle cultivation utilizing recycled oyster mushroom culture waste as a cultivating substrate for P. ostreatus. Total nitrogen percentage was 0.76%, 1.13%, 1.16%, 1.36%, and 1.38% in the 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-time mixed substrate, respectively; 0.95%, 1.04%, 1.34%, 1.36%, and 1.25% in the 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-time postharvest substrate, respectively; and 0.72% and 0.68% in the 2- and 3-time nonadditive substrate, respectively. Weight of the fresh fruiting body harvest was 115 g, 120 g, 117 g, 118 g, and 114 g on 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-time mixed substrate, respectively; and 105 g and 45 g on 2- and 3-time nonadditive substrate, respectively. The first mixed substrate (fresh) and recycled substrates generated no significant difference in the weight of fresh fruiting bodies harvested.

경인지역 대학생의 환경과 친환경농산물에 대한 인식 (Perceptions on Environment and Environment-Friendly Agricultural Products of College Students in Seoul and Incheon Area)

  • 본 연구는 경인지역 대학생을 대상으로 친환경농산물에 대한 지식정도를 알아보고, 환경과 친환경농산물에 대한 인식을 5점 척도로 평가하여 일반사항, 환경농산물에 대한 지식이 환경과 친환경농산물에 대한 인식에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보기 위해 실시되었으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 친환경농산물에 대한 자가 지식을 묻는 문항에 친환경농산물에 대해 '매우 잘 알고 있다'와 '잘 알고 있다'로 응답한 비율이 52.9%이었으며, 친환경농산물인증마크를 올바르게 선택한 학생은 50.9%이었다. 나머지 40.1%의 학생들이 오답으로 선택한 것 중 농산물품질인증마크가 65.8%로 가장 많았으며, 친환경농산물의 인증을 정부와 민간기관에서 병행하고 있는 것에 대해 87.0%가 모른다고 응답하였다. 둘째, 환경과 친환경농산물에 대한 인식을 5점 척도로 조사한 요인별 결과, 친환경농산물의 이미지에 대한 5문항의 평균 점수는 $3.84{\pm}0.68$로 높게 나타났으며, 5문항 중 '친환경 농산물은 건강에 좋은 것이다'라는 문항이 $3.95{\pm}0.84$로 가장 높은 점수를 나타내었고 '품질인증마크가 붙은 친환경농산물은 믿을 수 있다'의 평균 점수는 $3.70{\pm}0.92$로 가장 낮았다. 셋째, 환경에 대한 태도 3문항의 평균 점수는 $3.51{\pm}0.73$이었고, 3문항 중 '환경은 후세들을 위하여 최대한 보전하는 것이 원칙이다'라는 문항이 $4.16{\pm}0.90$으로 가장 높은 점수를 나타내어 이러한 환경보전 의식과 후세들을 생각하는 마음이 친환경농산물의 소비에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것으로 사료된다. 넷째, 농약에 대한 태도 2문항의 평균 점수는 $3.58{\pm}0.87$로 농약의 과다 사용과 잔류에 대한 불안감이 높았으며, 친환경농산물에 대한 인식에 영향을 미치는 요인 중 친환경농산물에 대한 자가 지식 정도는 친환경농산물의 이미지, 환경에 대한 태도, 농약에 대한 태도 모두에 유의한 영향을 나타내었다. 다섯째, 친환경농산물의 소비 증진을 위해 개선되어야 할 점으로는 '가격인하'에 대한 의견이 48.3%로 가장 많았고, '믿을 수 있는 생산자와 제조회사의 확립' 21.2%, '친환경농산물에 대한 홍보강화' 15.0%, '구매 장소의 다양화' 11.9%, '친환경농산물의 품질 향상' 8.3%, ‘품질인증 표시제도의 강화' 4.4% 순이었다. 이상에서 조사된 바에 의하면 대학생들은 친환경농산물을 환경과 건강에 좋은 농산물로 인식하고 있었으나 친환경농산물과 관련된 지식이 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 환경과 친환경농산물에 대한 좋은 인식은 구매 행동으로 이어질 수 있으며, 친환경농산물에 대한 올바른 지식은 구매 시 단순히 '가격'을 기준으로 판단하지 않게 해 줄 것이고, 끊임없는 유통 구조의 개선과 친환경농산물을 찾는 소비자의 증가는 친환경농산물의 '가격 인하'로까지 이어질 것이다. 소비자로서 바람직한 가치관을 가지고 올바르게 식품을 선택할 수 있도록 대중매체는 친환경농산물에 대한 적극적인 홍보를 수행하여야 하며 대학생들을 대상으로 식품 선택 및 소비자 교육을 실시하여 올바른 정보를 제공해 주어야 할 것이다.

친환경농산물 시장의 유통주체와 경쟁구조 (Main Bodies and Competition Structure of Distribution in Environment-friendly Agricultural Products)

  • By the environment-friendly(hereafter EF) agricultural policy and toward the safety food of consumers, there is much glowing supply and demand fur EF agricultural products, in Korea. But, in general, EF agricultural products are blown as unique, unreasonable and high price system. This study aims to make clare the main bodies and competition structure in EF agricultural products and the different from the agricultural products. The mail results of this study are summarized as follows. Firstly, farmers and consumers directly participate in the distribution, and the major distributors participate in the market of EF agricultural products after the certification system is got ready. Because EF agricultural products is not dealt and the price system is not built up in agricultural wholesale market. Secondly, the distribution route of EF agricultural products is organized the unified organization by the main bodies such as farmers, consumers co-op, and special distributors. In any step of distribution, the main body of distribution surely deals with the contracted farmers, consumers co-op, and special distributors. Accordingly, it is said that EF agricultural products has the competition structure between the distribution route organized the unified organization rather than between main bodies in the each steps of distribution.

A Rapid and Simple Method for DNA Preparation of Magnaporthe oryzae from Single Rice Blast Lesions for PCR-Based Molecular Analysis

  • Rice blast is one of the most destructive diseases of rice worldwide, and the causative agent is the filamentous ascomycete Magnaporthe oryzae. With the successful cloning of more and more avirulence genes from M. oryzae, the direct extraction of M. oryzae genomic DNA from infected rice tissue would be useful alternative for rapid monitoring of changes of avirulence genes without isolation and cultivation of the pathogen. In this study, a fast, low-cost and reliable method for DNA preparation of M. oryzae from a small piece of infected single rice leaf or neck lesion was established. This single step method only required 10 min for DNA preparation and conventional chemical reagents commonly found in the laboratory. The AvrPik and AvrPi9 genes were successfully amplified with the prepared DNA. The expected DNA fragments from 570 bp to 1,139 bp could be amplified even three months after DNA preparation. This method was also suitable for DNA preparation from M. oryzae strains stored on the filter paper. All together these results indicate that the DNA preparation method established in this study is reliable, and could meet the basic needs for polymerase chain reaction-based analysis of M. oryzae.
