Output traits in crop plants: Nutrients and pharmaceuticals

  • Output traits centered on improved plant-based products will find their way to consumers in such ways as nutritionally enhanced foods, therapeutic proteins for disease treatment and vaccines, bio-industrial products, modified oil quality and biofuels. Significant progress in biotechnology has occurred over the last several decades. The importance of output traits development and production using biotechnology will impact not only agribusiness, but also pharmaceutical and food industries. The objective of this paper is to review briefly the current status of output traits development in crop plants using nutrients and pharmaceuticals as examples.

  • Agricultural corporations have been introduced to increase the productivity of farming via entrepreneurial farm management. There are two main subgroups of agricultural corporations. One is composed of farming association corporations and the other consists of agricultural corporation companies. Major tax incentives for agricultural corporations are as follows: 1. Exemption of corporate income tax. 2. Exemption of capital gains tax for farmland investment. 3. Reduction and exemption of dividend income tax for investors.

Feeding Acacia saligna to Sheep and Goats with or without the Addition of Urea or Polyethylene Glycol

  • The objective of the research was to investigate the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or urea supplementation in sheep and goats fed a basal diet of Acacia saligna and wheat straw. The 3 dietary treatments were: (1) Control: ad libitum A. saligna+ 400 g/d wheat straw (95% DM) (basal diet); (2) Basal diet+50 g/d PEG 4000; and (3) Basal diet+1% (on a DM basis) urea sprayed onto the straw and A. saligna 30 min prior to feeding. All animals maintained live weight, regardless of the dietary treatment. All sheep readily consumed the A. saligna in preference to straw. In sheep both DMD and OMD were higher (p<0.05) where PEG was included in the diet compared to the other two treatments. Contrary to findings by other researchers there was no significant difference in DMI, DMD or OMD between sheep and goats in corresponding treatment groups. All animals were in positive N balance. For both sheep and goats, rumen ammonia concentrations were increased with the use of either urea or PEG. In these groups the maximum ammonia concentrations exceeded 50 mg/L, considered the minimum required to maximise microbial growth. This threshold, however, was exceeded only for a period of 8-11 h. Of those measured, rumen ammonia levels were generally the highest at 4 h post feeding. None of the measurements of rumen ammonia for the control group approached 50 mg/L. It is unclear how and why feed intake and live weight were maintained when rumen ammonia levels were often sub-optimal.

콩 재배농가의 경영효율성에 영향을 주는 원인분석 (Analysis on Factors of Management Efficiency for Bean Farm Households)

  • 본 연구는 콩 농가들의 경영효율성을 분석하고 이 경영효율성에 미치는 요인을 제시함에 목적이 있다. 분석결과 재배면적이 넓을수록 콩 규모효율성에 정(+)의 효과를 주지만 규모수익체증을 해야 하는 농가가 대부분이었다. 노동력과 관련성이 큰 자가노력비, 임차료, 고용노력비를 합하면 54.6%로 생산비의 절반이상을 차지하고 있으며 점차 증가하는 추세에 있다. 또한 고용노동비율이 높을수록 총효율성, 기술효율성, 규모효율성에 긍정적인 영향을 미치므로 효율적인 노동력 이용과 확보가 중요하다. 친환경농업의 척도인 유기질비료 비율은 총효율성과 배분효율성을 떨어뜨리고 관행농업의 척도인 농약비는 총효율성과 배분효율성을 높이는 것으로 분석되었지만 무기질비료 투입과 농약 저투입을 통한 고품질 농산물 가격을 반영하지 않아 향후 이를 반영한 연구가 필요하다.

텍스트마이닝을 활용한 농업 R&D 키워드 분석 (A Study on the Analysis of Agricultural R&D Keywords Using Textmining Method)

  • 본 연구는 농업 R&D의 추세를 살펴보고자 텍스트마이닝 기법을 활용하여 농업 R&D에 해당하는 키워드를 분석하였다. 분석자료는 NTIS의 국가연구개발사업 과제정보를 활용하였으며, 2003년부터 2018년까지의 농업 R&D의 주요 키워드를 연도별 및 연구개발단계별로 구분하였다. 텍스트마이닝을 위해 키워드의 TF-IDF를 계산하여 점수별로 순위를 매기었으며, 유사한 키워드별로 그룹화하여 해석하였다. 주요 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫 번째, 신기술의 도입과 외부 환경에 변화에 따른 농업 R&D 트렌드가 변화해가고 있다. 시간이 흐를수록 새로운 키워드가 대두되고 있으며, 기초연구 단계에서는 '기후변화'가, 응용연구 단계에서는 'ICT'와 '스마트팜'이, 개발연구 단계에서는 '수출' 키워드가 주되게 등장하고 있다. 두 번째, 연구개발 단계에서 시차를 가지고 키워드 변화가 나타나고 있다. 기초연구-응용연구-개발연구 순으로 주요 키워드가 변화하고 있으며, 대표적으로 '기후변화'와 '신품종' 키워드가 연구개발단계별로 연계되어 있었다. 세번째, 농업 R&D의 대표적인 키워드는 '벼' 키워드로 나타났다. 그러나 '녹색 및 기후변화 대응'과 '가공 및 유통기술' 같이 국내외 농업 환경 변화에 따라 연구의 방향성과 목적이 변화하고 있었다.

Types of Home Meal Replacement and Determinants of Consumption in South Korea

  • HMR is a home-style food product designed for convenience and cooked outside the home leaving out cumbersome cooking process and consumed at home. The present paper aims to find out factors that influence the consumption of HMR by analyzing data on food consumption during the 3 years between December 2010 and November 2013. Following the classification of Costa et al. (2001), this study categorized HMR products as 3 types as follows: C1 (ready to eat), C2 (ready to heat) and C3 (ready to cook), and examined factors affecting purchase rate and per capita purchase price for each type of HMR product. The results of our analysis show that only the purchase rate of C3 products was influenced by whether the purchaser was housewife with job or not. For those who do not live together with parents, per capita purchase price for HMR was high; and the more they ate out, the higher the purchase rate of HMR was.

Exploring Quality Issues of Dairy Supply Chain and Proposing IOT-enabled Tracking Systems in Developing Country

  • Recent scandals of milk additives in several developing countries provoked controversy about quality issue of dairy products, grapping academic attention to the dairy supply chain. In this paper, we first focus on moral hazard problem of self-interested entities about the quality across the dairy supply chain, due to unobservable and unverifiable quality management efforts of all entities - including dairy producers, stations, and a final producer - and high inspection cost for the quality. Based on the identified moral hazard problem, we understand why the adoption of IoT-based tracking systems about quality produced from each entity is a must, different from RFID-based tracking systems.
