  • Severe sepsis is the most common cause of death among critically ill patients in non-coronary intensive care units. In 2002, the guideline titled "Surviving Sepsis Campaign" was published by American and European Critical Care Medicine to decrease the mortality of severe sepsis and septic shock patients, which has been the basis of the treatment for those patients. After the first revised guidelines were published on 2008, the most current version was published in 2013 based on the updated literature of until fall 2012. Other important revised guidelines in critical care field such as 'Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Pain, Agitation, and Delirium in Adult Patients in the Intensive Care Unit' were revised in 2013. This article will review the revised guidelines and several additional interesting published papers of until March 2014, including the part of ventilator-induced lung injury and the preventive strategies.

  • Aeration was found to affect the biological denitrification by Ochrobactrum authropi SY509. Although cell growth was vigorous under 1 vvm of aeration and an agitation speed of 400 rpm in a 3-L jar fermentor, almost no nitrate was removed. Yet under low agitation speeds (100, 200, and 300 rpm), denitrification occurred when the dissolved oxygen was exhausted shortly af-ter the inoculation of the microorganism. Ochrobactrum authropi SY509 was found to express highly active denitrifying enzymes under anaerobic conditions. The microorganism also synthesized denitrifying enzymes under aerobic conditions (1 vvm and 400 rpm), yet their activity was only 60% of the maximum level under anaerobic conditions and the nitrate removal efficiency was merely 15%. However, although the activities of the denitrifying enzymes were inhibited in the presence of oxygen, they were fully recovered when the conditions were switched to anaerobic conditions.

  • Micro-structures fabricated by X-ray lithography are largely affected by doses, development conditions and other factors. For these reasons, PMMA development rates and its surface profiles under various development conditions were obseued. Development rates were measured in the rage from 1 to 6 $kJ/cm^3$ using the 9C1 white beamline of Pohang light source(PLS). In this experiment, we observed that development rates of stacked PMMA sheet using Si filter were relatively higher than that of not using Si filter. Furthermore, development rates in condition with the acoustic agitation(1 MHz, 3.67 $W/cm^3$) were twice than that in dipping condition with $35^{\circ}C$ developer considering the PMMA sheets-substrate bond strength

  • The objective of this study was to find the effect of the mixture of the nonionic surfactant and bioactive agent that solubilizes trichlorobenzene (TCB) present as a contaminant for surfactant-enhanced soil flushing (SESF). Three different nonionic surfactants and two different bioactive agents were obtained from four companies. Separate funnel experiments and shaker table agitation / centrifugation experiments were used for the test. Based on the separate funnel experimental results, three suitable mixture agents (APG + OSE, Brij 35 + MOSE, T-Maz 60 + MOSE) were selected. In the shaker table agitation / centrifugation experiments, these three different mixture agents were reduced to one (T-Maz 60 +MOSE). The maximum removal (95%) of TCB was obtained using a mixture of the nonionic surfactant and bioactive agent. Therefore, the used test methods and results can be used for SESF.

  • Urea/formaldehyde(UF) and melamine/formaldehyde(MF) microcapsules containing perfume and 2,4,4'-trichlroro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether(DP) were prepared by the in-situ polymerization using urea and formaldehyde. Effects of dispersing agent, accelerating agent, formaldehyde, agitation speed on the mean diameter of microcapsules were investigated. The diameter of microcapsule was decreased with increasing dispersing agent concentration. A slight increase in the diameter was observed when the concentration of film forming material was increased. The diameter of microcapsule was decreased with increasing agitation speed up to 8,000rpm. The mean diameters of UF microcapsule prepared at 8,000rpm are about 3$\mu$m. A slight decrease in the diameter was observed when the concentration of resorcinol was increased.

  • In this study, Electro spinning was carried out using Cabon nanotube 0.1%-Polyacrylonitrile 3%-Dimethylformamide 17% agitation solution. It was investigated the solute and solvent correlations according to the electro spinning voltages ranging form 5 to 40 kV, based on the SEM image. Except voltage 25 kV, electro spinning was failed due to the lack of electro spinning (less than 60%). Voltage 25 kV was showed excellent properties, and was confirmed Cabon nanotube 58.1 nm and diameter of Cabon nanotube + Polyacrylonitrile 1.76 ㎛ as shown SEM image. Also, the tensile test results were showed that SK Chemical prepreg electro spinning angle of 0 and 90 degrees were 137 MPa and 60 MPa, respectively.

  • Ni-P electroformed layers were investigated for developing a steam generator tube repair technology in PWRs. The effects of an additive, RPP (Reagent over Pitting Protection) and agitation on mechanical properties and microstructure of the layer were evaluated. The addition of the RPP showed to inhibit the formation of pores, to refine the grain size, and to increase the residual stress in the layer. However, the agitation of the solution during electroforming was observed to increase pores in local regions of the electroformed layer, resulting in decreasing its mechanical properties. The heat treatment of the layer at $343^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. precipitated the very fine particles of Ni3P in the layer, which inhibited grain growth and increased microhardness.

  • Periodic mesoporous organosilicas with rope-based morphology from a reaction gel composition of 1 BTME : 0.57 ODTMABr : 2.36 NaOH : 353 H2O were synthesized. While long rope-shaped product dominated in case of static synthesis condition , gyroid type products instead of rope shaped product appeared and rope shaped product disappeared with agitation. PMO with such a long rope shaped morphology is firstly reported. Additionally, various rope-based morphologies depending on the degree of bending, twisting, folding and winding of rope such as spirals, discoids, toroids, and worm-like aggregates were observed. White powdered products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 sorption measurement, SEM and TEM. From XRD pattern and TEM image, ODTMA-PMO with hexagonal symmetry was identified. The pore diameter and BET surface area of ODTMA-PMO are $32.9{\AA}$ and 799 m2g-1 , respectively. Hexagonally arrayed channels run with long axis of rope and rope-based shapes with various degree of curvature, which was elucidated by using TEM images.

  • This study reports the preparation and characterization of nanohydrogels by using sodium alginate as a model material. Alginate nanohydrogels (ANH) were prepared by emulsification-diffusion method in a w/o system with 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycero- 3-phosphocholin as the lipophilic surfactant. The effects of the alginate to surfactant ratio and the remaining water contents on the mean particle size and swellability of ANHs were investigated in terms of the concentration, agitation speed, and agitation time. The feasibility of using nanohydrogels and their controllability were proved by the water the absorbency of ANHs during a 7-day evaluation by dynamic light scattering. In this work, the mean particle sizes of ANHs could be controlled from 49.2 nm (measured in ethanol phase) to $1.9{\mu}m$ (measured in water phase, after 7 days of water absorption).

  • Loess, a natural clay, was evaluated as an adsorbent for the decolorization of Acid Orange II, an azo and reactive dye, from aqueous solution. Adsorption studies were performed at $30^{\circ}C$ and the effect of reaction time, loess dosage, initial concentration, loess particle size, pH, agitation rate were investigated to determine the optimum operation conditions. The removal efficiencies of color were measured to evaluate the effectiveness of loess. From this study, it was found that optimal reaction time was 10 min. Color removal efficiencies of Acid Orange II were increased as higher loess dosage, initial concentration and agitation rate. However, color removal efficiencies decreased when pH is high and loess particle becomes large. Adsorption of Acid Orange II fitted to the pseudo-second-order rate kinetics more than first-order rate kinetics. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm constants and correlation coefficients were calculated and compared. It was concluded that the adsorption data of Acid Orange II onto loess fitted to the Freundlich model more than Langmuir model.
