Background: Although studies and interest in sarcopenia have increased, it is still a matter of debate which muscle mass index better represents the aging process. We compared 3 indices for muscle mass (appendicular skeletal muscle mass [ASM]/weight, $ASM/height^2$, and the body mass index [BMI]-adjusted muscle mass index [ASM/BMI]) to determine which better reflected the aging process in terms of the decline in bone mineral density (BMD), visual acuity (VA), hearing power, renal function, pulmonary function, and handgrip strength. Methods: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the Korean population. Between 2008 and 2011, a total of 14,415 men and 17,971 women aged 10 years or older participated in the study. We plotted the changes in the 3 indices of muscle mass and compared these with changes in BMD, VA, hearing power, renal function, pulmonary function, and handgrip strength according to each age group. Results: The ASM/BMI showed similar changes in terms of surrogate markers of the aging process, while the ASM/weight and $ASM/height^2$ showed no correlation. Conclusions: Among muscle indices for sarcopenia, only the ASM/BMI represented the aging process.
This study was performed to investigate the age-related changes of the lipid metabolism and thrombogenic capacity in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats at the ages of 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 months old. Total lipid, triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol in plasma and liver, HDL-cholesterol concentration, and eicosanoid contents in plasma were measured. Lipid peroxides were determined by the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) in LDL fraction. Body weight was increased continuous until 16 months and decreased after 20 months. Epididymal fat pad (EFP) weight was increased continuously until 20 months and decreased at 24 months. Total lipid and TG concentrations in plasma were increased until 20 months and then rapidly decreased at 24 months but plasma cholesterol was increased continuously with aging. HDL-cholesterol level was increased continuously until 12 months, but decreased at 16 months and maintained there after. The TBARS levels in LDL fraction were the highest level at 24 months. Liver total lipid, TG, and total cholesterol concentrations were shown a tendency to increase with aging, and especially TG concentration was increased rapidly from 12 months to 16 months. Plasma thromboxane B$_2$ (TXB$_2$) and 6-keto-prostaglandin F$_1$ (6-keto-PGF$_1$) contents did not change with aging, but the ratio of TXB$_2$/6-keto-PGF$_1$ was increased with aging, especially from 8 to 12 months. These results showed that lipid levels in plasma and liver, TBARS levels in LDL fraction, and TXB$_2$/6-keto-PGF$_1$ ratio were increased with aging.
The role of free radicals in the progression of many diseases and aging has been given a great attention and total antioxidant status (TAS) has shown to be reduced with aging. The incidence of hypertension has shown to be relatively high in the aged population, and it is known to be associated with increased obesity and oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to examine the obesity indices and the total antioxidant status in hypertensive elderly (64y$\alpha$-tocopherol, $\beta$-carotene and ascorbic acid did not show their significant correlations with TAS. These results showed that the hypertensive elderly are prone to be obese and to have increased TAS. Due to unknown factors affecting TAS values, measurement of plasma TAS as a sole indicator of total antioxidant capacity is limited to fully understanding changes in the body's free radical trapping power. However, the results from the current study may suggest that hypertension and/or obesity might increase oxidative stress, followed by increased the body's total antioxidant defense system.

In recent years, the number of single-person households is increasing with the aging of the population and the number of the elderly living alone is increasing rapidly with the aging of the population. Therefore, the lonely death of the elderly living alone has become a social issue. In many cases, the body is discovered several days after death. In particular, lonely death of the elderly living alone is being taken more seriously in society, as there is no one to arrange funerals, organize and dispose of their belongings. Since the body is usually found after a few days, the decomposition of the body is often severe. Therefore, this paper proposes an indoor monitoring system using a temperature and humidity sensor and a human body sensor to prevent and respond to lonely deaths in the elderly living alone.
Due to aging, the physical fitness of middle-aged women decreases after menopause. This results in increased body fat and reduced lean body mass, both of which can lead to obesity. This phenomenon is accompanied by changes in hormone secretion in the body. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of circuit training on aging-related hormones in obese middle-aged women. The subjects were 20 obese middle-aged women. The subjects were divided into two groups: a circuit training group (n=10) and nonexercise control group (n=10). Growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), estrogen, and DHEA-S were measured before and after the circuit training program. The circuit training group performed circuit training for 12 weeks, three times per week. Exercise intensity was increased gradually from 60% to 80% of heart rate reserve every 6 weeks. In the circuit training group, at the end of the 12-week training program, the IGF-1 levels were significantly increased compared to pre-exercise levels, and they were higher than those of the control group. GH levels were also significantly increased in the circuit training group, but the differences were not statistically significant. DHEA-S was significantly increased in the circuit training group, but the difference was not statistically significant. The results showed that circuit training improved aging-related hormones levels in obese middle-aged women.
The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of living condition and aging on food intake in Korea. 98 free-meal receivers and 81 members in well-being center for the aged were asked about their food frequency and food consumption and their socioeconomic status by a questionnaire. All data were analyzed by SPSS (Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences) 10.0 program. There were statistical differences of living condition, marital status, former job and teeth status between free-meal receivers and people with stable lives. Moreover, all age groups of free-meal receivers had lower income, living expenses, educational period and frequency of physical activity than those of people with stable lives. But smoking and drinking was much higher in free-meal receivers. Arthritis was the most prevalent disease in both groups. And free-meal receivers had higher blood pressure and lower Body Mass Index than people with stable lives. Food consumption of free-meal receivers was definitely lower than that of people with stable lives in terms of food frequency and standard amount of food eaten. But noodles, bean sprouts and eggs were very important foods for free-meal receives. Food consumption of the aged was affected by age, educational period, income, blood pressure, duration after retirement, frequency of physical activity and Body Mass Index. Therefore, as various socioeconomic status affects on food intakes of the aged, more effective and practical nutritional programs which consider the receivers'socioeconomic status are needed for the nutritionally at-risk groups like the aging free-meal receivers.

Background: The circadian rhythm is the internal clock that controls sleep-wake cycles, metabolism, cognition, and several processes in the body, and its disruption has been associated with aging. The differentiated embryo chondrocyte (Dec) gene is related to circadian rhythm. To our knowledge, there are no reports of the relationship between dec gene expression and KRG effect. Therefore, we treated Dec gene knockout (KO) aging mice with KRG to study anti-aging related effects and possible mechanisms. Methods: We evaluated KRG and expression of Dec genes in an ototoxicity model. Dec genes expression in livers of aging mice was further analyzed. Then, we assessed the effects of DEC KO on hearing function in mice by ABR. Finally, we performed DNA microarray to identify KRG-related gene expression changes in mouse liver and assessed the results using KEGG analysis. Results: KRG decreased the expression of Dec genes in ototoxicity model, which may contribute to its anti-aging efficacy. Moreover, KRG suppressed Dec genes expression in liver of wild type indicating inhibition of senescence. ABR test indicated that KRG improved auditory function in aging mouse, demonstrating KRG efficacy on aging related diseases. Conclusion: Finally, in KEGG analysis of 238 genes that were activated and 158 that were inhibited by KRG in DEC KO mice, activated genes were involved in proliferation signaling, mineral absorption, and PPAR signaling whereas the inhibited genes were involved in arachidonic acid metabolism and peroxisomes. Our data indicate that inhibition of senescence-related Dec genes may explain the anti-aging efficacy of KRG.
This study examined the clothing wearing comfort of elderly women by electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) analyses. This study utilized 7 elderly individuals aged 65 or more. Two kinds of clothing ensemble (control and prototype) were used as experimental clothing. The control consisted of a general clothing ensemble and the prototype consisted of clothing that added an extra gap. Subjects wore the control or prototype from 9:00 to 21:30 and EEG and ECG signals were measured in the last 30 minutes. The EEG analysis showed that relative band power of a and ${\alpha}$/high ${\beta}$ were higher when they wore the prototype rather than the control. The ECG analysis showed that absolute band power of HF was higher; however, absolute band power of LF and LF/HF was lower when they wore the prototype rather than the control. Subjects felt less stressful and more comfortable when they wore the prototype. The results demonstrate the necessity to develop clothing in consideration of the body changes in elderly women. It is significant that the assessment of wearing comfort was aided by the use of EEG and ECG analysis in the field of clothing and textiles.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the variation of regional skin temperature with thermography during exercise. Seven men completed 82-min trials which consisted of rest, exercise of $VO_2$ max 60% and recovery period at $30{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and $60{\pm}5%RH$. Changes in skin temperature due to physical activity varied, depending region of the body. The skin temperature of the chest was significantly lowered and that of the back was significantly increased after exercise period(p < 0.05). There were significant negative relationship between the skin temperature of the chest and thermal comfort sensation, and positive relationship between skin temperature of the back and thermal comfort sensation(p < 0.05). It would be better to keep the chest warm, and the back cool during exercise. The skin temperature changed differently on body site due to exercise, and it was influenced by blood flow, sweating and air movement. This study would be meaningful in that the change of regional skin temperature during exercise was investigated consecutively with thermography. In further study, it would be more realistic to measure physiological response with functional sportswear which applies different functional fabric based on skin temperature.

This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior of steel sheet for an auto-body including temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity. In order to identify the temperature-dependent strain rate sensitivity of SPRC35R, SPRC45E and TRIP60, uniaxial tensile tests are performed with the variation of the strain rates from 0.001/sec to 200/sec and the variation of environmental temperatures from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained from the static tensile test and that at the intermediate strain rate is obtained from the high speed tensile test. Experimental results show that the variation of the flow stress and fracture elongation becomes sensitive to the temperature as the strain rate increases. It is observed that the dynamic strain aging occurs with TRIP60 at the temperature above $150^{\circ}C$. Results also indicate that the flow stress and tincture elongation of SPRC35R are more dependent on the changes of strain rates and temperature than those of SPRC45E and TRIP60.
