  • Concentrated solar power(CSP) is receiving attention for its ability to generate dispatchable power from heat stored in thermal energy storage(TES). There are currently four types of CSP technology, however experts expect that only parabolic trough and solar tower are to survive from the market due to its higher efficiency and larger capacity in storage. While the initial cost for installing CSP plant is still expensive, the experts expect that investment cost of CSP would decline to the level which would be competitive with PV or wind in the near term future. In addition, further growth in its installation capacity is expected due to the United States and China's aggressive investments in CSP.

  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in the lacrimal gland is a very rare disease with poor overall prognosis. Its primary treatment is surgical excision, including orbital exenteration and radical orbitectomy, which is combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Age, histopathologic type, bone invasion, and tumor extent are known factors that affect the prognosis of ACC. Furthermore, perineural invasion is highly associated with local tumor recurrence and tumor base invasion. Here, we report a rare case of ACC in the lacrimal gland with superior sagittal sinus invasion that repeatedly recurred after the surgical excision.

  • Head of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer indicates its growth number of years and has been widely used for supplying energy to weaklings or used as vomit. Butanol fraction of Panax ginseng head was significantly effective on gastritis and ulcer models in rats. and also had anti-oxidative properties in the previous study. It has been well established that gastric ulcer is induced by imbalance between aggressive factors and protective factors. and the oxidative reaction makes the lesions on gastric mucosal injury severer. • Adenoid cystic carcinoma is malignant neoplasm belonging to a group of tumors of salivary gland origin. It is an aggressive tumor characterized by slow growth and incidious destruction of surrounding tissues. Perineural invasion is a prominent feature. Spread to regional lymph node is rare, other than by direct extension. Distant metastasis are more common. We experienced a 65-year old female with adenoid cystic carcinoma of minor salivary gland in retromolar pad.

  • The increasing price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has forced many households to shift to firewood/charcoal in the Philippines, causing tremendous pressure on the dwindling forest. This transition is more obvious in the rural area where firewood price is almost half of that in the cities. Both problems on big demand for firewood and the pressure on our forest can be partly solved by going into firewood plantation. After all, the country has vast track of idle lands, both private and government lands, waiting to be developed. What the government can do are: a) aggressive promotion of firewood plantation, b) simplify further the old technology on establishing firewood plantation to encourage more farmers, c) improve charcoal processing and d) promote the use of efficient stoves. This write up discusses the need for firewood plantation, areas available for planting, where to plant in farms, what species to plant in a particular soil type/location for optimum growth, planting methods, harvesting, marketing, and the side lights on the ecological benefits derived from plantation aside from wood.

  • Gliomas are the most frequently occurring primary malignancies in the central nervous system, and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and most aggressive of these tumors. Despite vigorous basic and clinical studies over past decades, the median survival of patients with this disease remains at about one year. Recent studies have suggested that GBMs contain a subpopulation of tumor cells that displays stem cell characteristics and could therefore be responsible for in vivo tumor growth. We will summarize the major oncogenic pathways abnormally regulated in gliomas, and review the recent findings from mouse models that our laboratory as well as others have developed for the study of GBM. The concept of cancer stem cells in GBM and their potential therapeutic importance will also be discussed.

  • Abnormal situation caused by aggressive behavior of pigs adversely affects the growth of pigs, and comes with an economic loss in intensive pigsties. Therefore, IT-based video surveillance system is needed to monitor the abnormal situations in pigsty continuously in order to minimize the economic demage. Recently, some advances have been made in pig monitoring; however, detecting each pig is still challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a new color image-based monitoring system for the detection of the individual pig using a fast region-based convolution neural network with consideration of detecting touching pigs in a crowed pigsty. The experimental results with the color images obtained from a pig farm located in Sejong city illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • A recently recognized connective tissue disorder, Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is a genetic aortic aneurysm syndrome caused by mutations in the transforming growth factor-receptor type I or II gene (TGFBR1 or TGFBR2). They have distinctive phenotypic abnormalities including widely spaced eyes (hypertelorism), bifid uvula or cleft palate, and arterial tortuosity with aortic aneurysm or dissection throughout the arterial tree. LDS is characterized by aggressive and rapid progression of aortic aneurysm. Therefore, the patients with distinct phenotype, marked aortic dilatation and aneurysm at early age should be suspected to be affected by LDS and rapid TGFBR gene analysis should be done. We report one child diagnosed as LDS due to typical phenotypes and two novel missense mutations of the TGFBR2 gene (c.1526G>T and c.1528A>T).

  • The false-positive FDG uptakes on head and neck areas are common due to benign lesion, iatrogenic and physiologic changes. The Schneiderian papilloma is uncommon benign tumor arising from the mucosa of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. The findings of paranasal papilloma on conventional modality such as CT and MRI are non-specific and they could be confused with inflammatory polyp or retention cyst. Despite of benign tumor, the papilloma usually shows locally aggressive growth with malignant potential, therefore the FDG can be actively accumulated in this lesion. We describe the case of 18F-FDG PET/CT finding in a 77-year-old woman who demonstrates oncocytic papilloma in maxillary sinus.

  • Fibromatosis is a broad group of benign fibroblastic proliferation that shows locally aggressive growth but never metastasize. Common anatomic sites include abdominal wall, extremity, and mesentery. Little is reported about clinical features and outcome of fibromatosis of the head and neck. The treatment of choice is wide excision, which is often difficult. Postoperative recurrence rates are high. We recently confirmed a unique case of fibromatosis occurred on the hypopharynx of 44-year-old male patient and report this interesting case with review of literature.
