  • Mathematical forecasting models and a practical computer based forecasting system are developed for planning production in a manufacturing and distribution network. The forecasting system works at the highest level of a hierarchical computer-based decision support system consisting of the forecasting system, an aggregate planning system and a shop floor scheduling system. The dynamics of business operations for an actual company have been considered to make this study a unique comprehensive analysis of a real world forecasting problem.

Grid Search Based Production Switching Heuristic for Aggregate Production Planning

  • The Production Switching Heuristic (PSH) develope dby Mellichamp and Love (1978) has been suggested as a more realistic, practical and intuitively appealing approach to aggregate production planning (APP). In this researh, PSH has been modified to present a more sophisticated open grid search procedure for solving the APP problem. The effectiveness of this approach has been demonstrated by determining a better near-optimala solution to the classic paint factory problem. The performance of the modified production switching heuristic is then compared in the context of the paint factory problem with results obtained by other prominent APP models including LDR, PPP, and PSH to conclude that the modified PSH offers a better minimum cost solution than the original PSH model.

  • At the present time, container transportation plays a key role in the international logistics and the efforts to increase the productivity of container logistics become essential for Korean trucking companies to survive in the domestic as well as global competition. This study suggests an approach for determining fleet size for container road transportation with dynamic demand. Usually the vehicles operated by the transportation trucking companies in Korea can be classified into three types depending on the ways how their expenses occur; company-owned truck, mandated truck which is owned by outsider who entrust the company with its operation, and rented vehicle (outsourcing). Annually the trucking companies should decide how many company-owned and mandated trucks will be operated considering vehicle types and the transportation demands. With the forecasted monthly data for the volume of containers to be transported a year, a heuristic algorithm using tabu search is developed to determine the number of company-owned trucks, mandated trucks, and rented trucks in order to minimize the expected annual operating cost. The idea of the algorithm is based on both the aggregate production planning (APP) and the pickup-and-delivery problem (PDP). Finally the algorithm is tested for the problem how the trucking company determines the fleet size for transporting containers.

Comparative study on bearing characteristics of pervious concrete piles in silt and clay foundations

  • With the advantages of high permeability and strength, pervious concrete piles can be suitable for ground improvement with high water content and low bearing capacity. By comparing the strength and permeability of pervious concrete with different aggregate sizes (3-5 mm and 4-6 mm) and porosities (20%, 25%, 30% and 35%), the recommended aggregate size (3-5 mm) and porosity (30%) can be achieved. The model tests of the pervious concrete piles in soft soil (silt and clay) foundations were conducted to evaluate the bearing characteristics, results show that, for the higher consolidation efficiency of the silty foundation, the bearing capacity of the silty foundation is 16% higher, and the pile-soil stress ratio is smaller. But when it is the ultimate load for the piles, they will penetrate into the underlying layer, which reduces the pile-soil stress ratios. With higher skin friction of the pile in the silty foundation, the pile penetration is smaller, so the decrease of the pile axial force can be less. For the difference in consolidation efficiency, the skin friction of pile in silt is more affected by the effective stress of soil, while the skin friction of pile in clay is more affected by the lateral stress. When the load reaches 4400 N, the skin friction of the pile in the silty foundation is about 35% higher than that of the clay foundation.

Estimation of frost durability of recycled aggregate concrete by hybridized Random Forests algorithms

  • An effective approach to promoting sustainability within the construction industry is the use of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) as a substitute for natural aggregates. Ensuring the frost resilience of RAC technologies is crucial to facilitate their adoption in regions characterized by cold temperatures. The main aim of this study was to use the Random Forests (RF) approach to forecast the frost durability of RAC in cold locations, with a focus on the durability factor (DF) value. Herein, three optimization algorithms named Sine-cosine optimization algorithm (SCA), Black widow optimization algorithm (BWOA), and Equilibrium optimizer (EO) were considered for determing optimal values of RF hyperparameters. The findings show that all developed systems faithfully represented the DF, with an R2 for the train and test data phases of better than 0.9539 and 0.9777, respectively. In two assessment and learning stages, EO - RF is found to be superior than BWOA - RF and SCA - RF. The outperformed model's performance (EO - RF) was superior to that of ANN (from literature) by raising the values of R2 and reducing the RMSE values. Considering the justifications, as well as the comparisons from metrics and Taylor diagram's findings, it could be found out that, although other RF models were equally reliable in predicting the the frost durability of RAC based on the durability factor (DF) value in cold climates, the developed EO - RF strategy excelled them all.

  • Fusion and gemination are developmental anomalies of teeth that may require endodontic treatment. Fusion may cause various clinical problems related to esthetics, tooth spacing, and other periodontal complications. Additional diagnostic tools are required for the diagnosis and the treatment planning of fused tooth. The present case report describes a case of unilateral fusion of a supernumerary root to an upper permanent central incisor with large periapical lesion in which a conservative approach was used without extraction of supernumerary tooth and obturated with mineral trioxide aggregate to reach a favorable outcome.

기후변화시나리오를 이용한 미래 장기하상변동 및 골재 채취량 산정: 논산천을 사례로 (Estimation of Future Long-Term Riverbed Fluctuations and Aggregate Extraction Volume Using Climate Change Scenarios: A Case Study of the Nonsan River Basin)

  • 본 연구에서는 기후변화에 따른 하상변동과 골재 채취량 산정을 위해 논산천 유역을 대상으로 기후변화시나리오 기반의 SWAT 모형을 이용한 강우-유출 모델링과 HEC-RAS 모형을 이용한 장기 하상변동 모델링을 수행하였다. SSP5-8.5 시나리오의 미래 전반기에 대한 강우-유출 및 유사량 해석결과 연강수량의 차이가 최대 600 mm 이상 발생함에 따라 해당 유역의 유사유출량 또한 연간 30,000 ton 이상 차이가 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 장기 하상변동 모델링을 통해 논산천 하류 하도의 퇴적구간 및 골재채취 가능량을 산정한 결과 금강 합류부로 부터 약 4.6~6.9 km의 상류부 2.455 km 구간에 대해 골재채취가 가능할 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 통해 극한강우 또는 가뭄 등의 이상기후로 인한 기후위기의 위험성이 커질 수 있으며 이러한 변동성의 증가는 장기적인 골재채취에 영향을 줄 수 있음을 확인하였다. 따라서 향후 장기적인 골재채취 계획 및 정책 수립에 기후변화의 영향을 고려하는 것이 중요할 것으로 판단된다.

공급승수를 이용한 골재산업의 유발효과 추정 연구 (A Study on Induced Effect Estimation of Aggregate and Stone Sector with Ritz-Spaulding Multipliers)

  • 본 연구는 지역산업연관표를 이용하여 생산-생산 승수를 도출하고 비금속광물 부문과 콘크리트 제품 부문을 통해 골재의 유발효과를 추정하였다. 유발효과를 파악할 수 있도록 지역산업연관표를 활용하여 분석을 진행하였다. 골재의 유발효과를 도출함에 있어 지역산업연관표를 이용하는 것은 부문분류 문제로 인해 어려움이 있는데, 본 연구는 골재를 포함한 비금속광물 부문을 골재로 간주한 분석과 골재생산의 대부분을 수요하는 콘크리트 제품 부문을 분석함으로써 부문분류 제약으로 인한 난점을 완화하고자 하였다. 산업연관효과를 추정하는 과정에서 골재의 생산감소 상황을 전제해 진행하였으며, 콘크리트 제품 부문을 분석하는 과정에서는 골재 생산감소로 인한 콘크리트 제품 생산감소의 효과, 즉 골재 1단위 생산감소는 콘크리트 제품 부문 0.8511단위의 생산감소를 전제로 분석하였다. 지역산업연관표가 구분하고 있는 17개 광역시도에 대해 자기지역 내 및 지역간 유발효과를 산출하였다. 골재 생산감소로 인해 자기지역에서 발생하는 생산감소 효과는 지역별 평균 1.28의 유발효과를 보였으며, 타지역의 골재 생산감소로 인한 생산감소 효과는 지역별 평균 0.10의 유발효과를 보였다. 취업효과도 산출하였는데, 지역별 골재 및 콘크리트 제품 부문의 규모에 따른 차이를 나타낼 수 있도록 10% 생산감소 상황을 전제하여 취업효과를 산출하였다.

  • This paper discusses the problem of coordinating aggregate planning and production schedules, minimizing the combined set-up inventory and capacity costs. In this study, by using the relation of fixed production quantity and the number of set-up we develop a heuristirc procedure of solving the discrete demand, fixed production quantity, variable capacity problem. First, we obtain the trade-off between set-up cost and capacity cost, then search the point minimizing the combined inventory and capacity costs.
