  • A newly designed Ag/$Ag^+$ reference electrode in a quartz tube with a tungsten tip junction (W-tip-Quartz- REF) was fabricated and its electrochemical performance was compared with a conventional Pyrex tube-based Ag/$Ag^+$ reference electrode (Py-REF). The results of the electrochemical potential measurements with the W-tip-Quartz- REF and the Py-REF in the LiCl-KCl eutectic melts for a wide temperature range proved that the oxide layer on the surface of the tungsten metal tip provided a high ionic conduction. Stability of our newly designed W-tip- Quartz-REF was tested by measuring a junction potential for 12 hours at 700${^{\circ}C}$. The results of the cyclic voltammetric measurement indicated that the Ag/$Ag^+$ reference electrode in the quartz tube with a tungsten tip junction can provide a good performance for a wide temperature range.

  • Pressure-balanced external Ag/AgCl electrode has been extensively used for both Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and Boiling Water Reactor (PWR) environments. The use of KCI-based buffer solution often becomes the source of electrode potential drift due to slow leakage through its porous plug, typically made of zirconia. It is reported that results of our effort to improve the stability of electrode potential by using high purity water as the filling solution in which $Cl^-$ ion activity can be established and maintained at the solubility of AgCl even with the sustained leakage for a long period. Stability tests have been made in boron and lithium mixture solution at $288^{\circ}C$. The electrode potential remained stable within 10 mV over one week period. And after a thermal cycle between 288 to $240^{\circ}C$ the potential shift of Ag/AgCl electrodes did not exceed 15 mV By using the limiting equivalent ionic conductances and Agar's hydrodynamic theory, the thermal liquid junction potential (TLJP) of the electrode has been predicted. The calculated values for the water-fiued Ag/AgCl electrode potential, in which the chlorine concentration in the filling solution was derived from the measured data at ambient temperature, had a good agreement with the experimental values.

  • The dissolved oxygen sensor of thick film type was fabricated by screen print method and measured the characteristic, reference electrode used Ag/AgCl, and working electrode used Pt. The devices are continuously powered at potential of $0.7V{\sim}0.8V$ versus Ag/AgCl reference electrode and results indicated that the response characteristic of sensor was $1.002{\mu}A{\sim}19.792{\mu}A$ for thirty seconds. we can know that it is good linearity when compared with of existent dissolved oxygen meter. Therefore sensor fabricated excels sensitivity for dissolved oxygen and will be considered to be applied typically because the price is costly.

  • A micromachined biochip with a three dimensional silicon chamber was developed for the construction of biosensors. Anisotropic etching was used fur the formation of the chamber on the p-type silicon wafer(100) and then was glued to the Pyrex glass bottom-substrate with pre-deposited platinum electrode. The electrochemical characterization of its Pt electrode and Ag/AgCl reference electrode was investigated.

  • A FET(Field Effect Transistor) type dissolved $CO_2$ sensor based on Severinghaus type $CO_2$ sensor was fabricated by the photolithographic process. The sensor consists of Ag/AgCl reference electrode and membranes (hydrogel membrane and $CO_2$ gas permeable membrane) on the pH-ISFET base chip. Ag/AgCl reference electrode was fabricated as follows. Ag layer was thermally evaporated and then its upper surface was chemically chloridized into the AgCl. The hydrogel used as an internal electrolyte solution was fabricated by a photolithographic method using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) and acrylamide. $CO_2$ permeable membrane on the top of the hydrogel layer was formed by photolithographic process with UV-oligomer. The FET type $pCO_2$ sensor fabricated by photolithographic method showed good linearity within the concentration range of $10^{-3}{\sim}10^0mole/{\ell}$ of dissolved $CO_2$ in aqueous solution with high sensitivity.

  • A structure of a glass electrode-type pH sensor for measuring any concentration of $H^+$ in an aqueous solution was embodied with bulk micromachining technology. Two open well structures were formed, and a reference electrode was secured by the Ag/AgCl thin film in the sloped side of the etched structure. A sensitive membrane of an indicator electrode for generating a potential by an exchange reaction to $H^+$ was made with a glass containing Na 20% or more finely so that its thickness might be $100{\mu}m$ or so, and then it was bonded to one pyramidal structure. A liquid junction for a current path was formed by filling an agar in the anisotropically etched part of the Si wafer, which had a size of $50{\mu}m{\times}50{\mu}m$, and then bonded it to the other. After complete fabrication of each part, it was filled with a 2M KCl reference solution and encapsulated the sensor structure with a cold expoxy. The potential value of fabricated pH sensor was about 90mV/pH in the standard pH solutions.

  • Sodium hydroxide solutions are often employed as sterilization agents in the pharmaceutical industry. Here, the chloride content is considered as a critical impurity. In this study, an electrochemical method was developed to remove chloride ions (Cl-) through the oxidative deposition of AgCl on a Ag anode. The Cl- content in the commercially available 50% w/w NaOH solution employed was approximately 100 mg Cl-/kg NaOH. As the OH- content is approximately 18,000 times higher than the Cl- content, the formation of AgCl may be expected to be thermodynamically less favorable than the formation of Ag2O. However, activation energies for AgCl and Ag2O formation have been reported to be approximately 3.8 and 31.2 kJ/mol, respectively, and indicate that AgCl formation is favored. AgCl can be selectively produced by controlling the anode potential. Here, the Cl- concentration was reduced to less than 50 mg Cl-/kg NaOH when an anode potential of 0.18 or 0.19 V vs. Hg/HgO (reference electrode) was applied for one hour at 50℃. XRD analysis and visual monitoring of the Ag anode confirmed the oxidative deposition of AgCl on the anode surface as well as the electrochemical desalination of the concentrated NaOH solution.

  • We give pressure stimulation into organic thin films and then manufacture a device under the accumulation condition that the state surface pressure is 10[mN/m]. In processing of a device manufacture, we can see the process is good from the change of a surface pressure for organic thin films and transfer ratio of area per molecule. The structure of manufactured device is Au/Poly-${\gamma}$ Benzyl $_D$-Glutamate/Al and Au/Poly-${\gamma}$ Benzyl $_D$-Glutamate/Au; the number of accumulated layers is 1, 3, 5 and 7. Also, we then examined of the MIM device by means of I-V. The I-V characteristic of the device is measured from 0 to +2[V]. We determined electrochemical measurement by using cyclic voltammetry with a three-electrode system. LB film accumulated by monolayer on an ITO. In the cyclicvoltammetry, An Ag/AgCl reference electrode, a platinum wire counter electrode and LB film-coated ITO working electrode measured in $LiBF_4$ solution, stable up to 0.9V vs. Ag/AgCl.
