  • In this study, an aerodynamic performance analysis code has been developed as a part of rotorcraft comprehensive program. Airloads on rotor blades are calculated based on the blade element theory with look-up tables of aerodynamic coefficients of 2-D airfoils. In order to calculate rotor induced inflow, various inflow prediction methods such as linear inflow, dynamic inflow, prescribed wake and free wake model are integrated into the present module. The aerodynamic characteristics of each method are compared and validated against available experimental data such as Elliot's inflow distribution and sectional normal force coefficients of AH-1G.

  • The optimum design and the performance analysis software called POSEIDON for the HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) was developed by use of BEMT. The Prandtl's tip loss theory was adopted to consider the blade tip loss. The lift and the drag coefficient of S-809 airfoil were predicted via X-FOIL and also the post stall characteristics of S-809 were estimated by the Viterna's equations. All the predicted aerodynamic characteristics are fairly well agreed with the wind tunnel test results, performed by Sommers in Delft university of technology. The rated power of the testing rotor is 20kW(FIL-20) at design conditions. The experimental aerodynamic parameters and the X-FOIL data were used for the power prediction of the FIL-20 respectively. The comparison results shows good agreement in power prediction.

  • The experiments of the Aerodynamic characteristics of a counter-rotating axial fan were carried out. The performance tests of a single and a counter-rotating axial fan were carried out based on the Korean Standard Testing Methods for Turbo-fans and Blowers(KS B 6311). The performances of single and counter-rotating axial fans were obtained and compared with each other. The flow fields of a counter-rotating axial fan at the peak efficiency point were measured using a five-hole probe. As a result, compared with the performance of a single-rotating axial fan, that of a counter-rotating axial fan was superior. And it is confirmed that most of the swirl flow generated by the front rotor was eliminated by the rear rotor.

  • The purpose of the current study is to examine the aerodynamic characteristics of hypersonic waverider vehicle by simulation and experiment. The simulation was accomplished using NS aerodynamic codes developed in Northwestern Polytechncal University. The objective of experiment are twofold. The first is to examine the accuracy of simulation. The second is to examine the effects of shockwave an d boundary layer interactions on aero dynamic performance hypersonic configurations.

  • The performance study shows the result using two different methods which are used to control missile or aircraft. One is the Thrust Vector Control(TVC) method for the aviation of next generation and the other is the present effective Shroud Jet-vane System(SJVS) method for the satellite effector development. The research was done through the performance estimation using the numerical simulation analysis, the modelling, the performance measuring using the model, the investigation of the flow visualization and aerodynamic performance with the enforced power to the vane and the result comparison.

  • Characteristics of vertical and horizontal axis wind turbines are explained. The speed and direction of wind on the blade of the Darrieus type turbine changes very severely. Therefore dynamic stall happens periodically and the wake from the front blade deteriorates the performance of rear blades. Blade element momentum theory(BEMT) is widely utilized for aerodynamic design and performace prediction of horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT). Computation analysis and wind tunnel test are also performed for the performance prediction.

  • This paper describes aerodynamic preliminary design performance prediction and flow analysis for turbine of the marine middle engine turbocharger. The performance characteristics of turbocharger turbine are investigated at various operating conditions using mass flow rate and computational flow analysis for rotor and nozzle at design point are performed. Preliminary design results are performed by applying mean line and radial equilibrium theory. Performance prediction and flow analysis results show good agreement with experiments. From 3 dimensional flow analysis result, efficiency is 0.6% greater than design point. Therefore, this design approach is useful for preliminary design, and helps to increase the design capability for optimized rotor blade.

  • The aerodynamic performance of axial flow fans for outdoor unit of air-conditioner is investigated by numerical and experimental approaches in this study. The pressure drop and volumetric flow rate are compared each other in several different conditions and fan speeds. It is shown that the predicted fan performances are quite well matched with the experimental results. It is also shown that the curvature of the fan arc and hub height have significant influences on the flow distribution after hub. By the results of this study, it can be suggested that several ways to improve the aerodynamic performance of the axial flow fan can be found using the numerical analysis.

  • Design of 500W class UMGT(Ultra Micro Gas Turbine) for power generation is conducted. Basic design parameters are obtained by cycle analysis. Off-design performances are predicted by 1D aerodynamic design and 1D performance analysis of compressor and turbine. 3D impellers are designed and 3D performance analysis is carried out to predict the performance characteristics of UMGT. 1D and 3D performance analysis show similar results. Structure analysis is conducted to select materials. Titanium Alloy is proposed for structural stability.
