In the case of the general helicopter among rotorcraft, length of the rotor blade for thrust-generation is longer than that of fuselage and tail rotor is required in order to compensate moment of the fuselage. For those reasons, enough space for take-off and landing should be secured and an accessibility for building is low. Also, the accidents caused by tail rotor occur frequently. However, the case of counter-rotating has merits that tail rotor is unnecessary as well as length of the rotor blade can be shortened but has a weakness that the weight of body is increased. In the present study, aerodynamic force measurement on single rotor system equipped with NACA0012 airfoil, which has aspect ratio of 6 and chord length of 35.5 mm, was carried out. And measurement was conducted with blade which has a half size of the former blade by using single motor counter-rotating. Aerodynamic force measurement was acquired by using 6-component balances and coefficients of thrust and power were derived along the pitch angle varying from 0$^{\circ}$ to 90$^{\circ}$ with the increment of 10$^{\circ}$. Those aerodynamic force data will be utilized for the design and production of brand-new counter-rotating rotor blade system which has same thrust with single blade system and provides a good accessibility to building by reducing its blade length.

The study on the measurement method of the aerodynamic performance of a turbo compressor was conducted. It is well known that the performance and the efficiency of the compressor can be calculated from the temperature and pressure distribution in each stage of the compressor. In the past Pitot tubes and thermocouples were used to measure pressure and temperature respectively, and recently pressure and temperature rake is used in order to decrease the measuring time and the number of measurement. The miniature total pressure rake which is available in the compressor with a small axial gap is designed and is under development.

This paper presents the experimental results of a study undertaken to develop an electrostatic spray system for a combustion application. The characteristics of the liquid atomization and the droplet dispersion in the electrostatic spray of twin fluids were investigated by the optical measurement techniques. The processes associated with the break-up of charged jets were also observed using the laser sheet visualization. The diameter and velocity of droplets were simultaneously measured using the phase Doppler measurement technique. The electrostatic atomization of the liquid fuel depended primarily on the charging voltage and the flow rate, but the dispersion of droplets depended significantly on the aerodynamic flow. Aerodynamic influences on the liquid atomization decreased with an increase of the charging voltage. Consequently, the liquid atomization and the droplet dispersion could be independently controlled using the electrostatic and aerodynamic mechanisms.

This paper introduces an experimental device which can measure accurate aerodynamic forces without support interference in wide experimental region for wind tunnel test of micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). A stereo pattern recognition (SPR) method was introduced to a magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS), which can eliminate support interference by levitating the experimental model, to establish wider experimental region; thereby MSBS-SPR integrated system was developed. The SPR method is non-contact, highly accurate three-dimensional position measurement method providing wide measurement range. To evaluate the system performance, a series of performance evaluations including SPR system measurement accuracy and 6 degrees of freedom (DOFs) position/attitude control of the MAV model were conducted. This newly developed system could control the MAV model rapidly and accurately within almost 60mm for translational DOFs and 40deg for rotational DOFs inside of $300{\times}300mm$ test section. In addition, a static wind tunnel test was conducted to verify the aerodynamic force measurement capability. It turned out that this system could accurately measure the aerodynamic forces in low Reynolds number, even for the weak forces which were hard to measure using typical balance system, without making any mechanical contact with the MAV model.
Simultaneous pressure and force measurements have been conducted on a stationary box deck section model for two configurations (namely without and with New Jersey traffic barriers) at various angles of incidence. The mean and fluctuating aerodynamic coefficients and pressure coefficients were derived, together with their spectra and with the coherence functions between the pressures and the total aerodynamic forces. The mean aerodynamic coefficients derived from force measurements are first compared with those derived from the integration of the pressures on the deck surface. Correlation between forces and local pressures are determined in order to gain insight on the wind excitation mechanism. The influence of the angle of incidence on the pressure distribution and on the fluctuating forces is also analysed. It is evidenced how particular deck section areas are more responsible for the aerodynamic excitation of the deck.
The effect of channel cutback on three-dimensional flow fields and aerodynamic losses downstream of a cavity squealer tip has been investigated in a turbine rotor cascade for the squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-to-chord ratio of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.51% and h/c = 2.0% respectively. The cutback length-to-camber ratio is changed to be $CB/c_c$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. The results show that longer cutback delivers not only stronger secondary flow but also higher aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage vortex region, meanwhile it leads to lower aerodynamic loss in the passage vortex region. The discharge of cavity fluid through the cutback opening provides a beneficial effect in the reduction of aerodynamic loss, whereas there also exists a side effect of aerodynamic loss increase due to local wider tip gap near the trailing edge. With increasing $CB/c_c$ from 0.0 to 0.3, the aerodynamic loss coefficient mass-averaged all over the measurement plane tends to increase slightly.
To investigate the motion-induced aeroelastic effects (or aerodynamic feedback effects) on a square cylinder in uniform flow, a series of wind tunnel tests involving the pressure measurement of a rigid model (RM) and simultaneous measurement of the pressure and vibration of an aeroelastic model (AM) have been systematically carried out. More specifically, the aerodynamic feedback effects on the structural responses, on the mean and root-mean-square wind pressures, on the power spectra and coherence functions of wind pressures at selected locations, and on the aerodynamic forces were investigated. The results indicated the vibration in the lock-in range made the shedding vortex more coherent and better organized, and hence presented unfavorable wind-induced effects on the structure. Whereas the vibration in the non-lock-in range generally showed insignificant effects on the flow structures surrounding the square cylinder.

Noise generated from maglev vehicles mainly consists of two components, one is due to mechanical noise and the other due to aerodynamic noise. The former is due to the vehicle-guideway interactions and the latter results from the unsteady air flow around the vehicle. Aerodynamic noise could become more predominant around 225 km/h for maglev vehicles. In this paper, the aerodynamic noise of maglev vehicles is investigated experimentally. The results of the wind tunnel experiments of maglev vehicle models are introduced and compared. The comparison shows that the position of the main noise is between the bottom of the vehicle model and the rail. It is also found that the emitted sound pressure level is related to the gap size between the vehicle bottom and the rail.
Numerical analysis of aerodynamic heating for KPSAM is performed using aerodynamic heating model suitable to KPSAM, which has complex flow field resulting from the spike attached to the dome, such as large separation area and the strong shock/boundary layer interaction region around reattachment point on the dome. The aerodynamic heating model is validated and modified through the comparison between the flight test measurement and the thermal analysis results. TFD temperature sensors are installed on the dome to measure surface temperature during the flight. Computation results, obtained from the heat transfer analysis on the sensors, agree well with flight test data. The aerodynamic heating model provides heat transfer rate into surface as a boundary condition of unsteady 1D/axisymmetric thermal analysis on the missile structure. The axisymmetric thermal analysis using FLUENT is more versatile than the 1D analysis and can be applied to the heating problem related with complex structures and multi-dimensional heat transfer problems such as prediction of temperature rise at contact surface of different materials.

In order to estimate a yacht sail performance, measuring system of aerodynamic forces acting on the yacht sail is constructed and experiments of flexible model sail are carried out at the medium-size subsonic wind tunnel of Chungnam National University. Experimental results for a flexible sail are compared with experimental and numerical results of fixed shape sail. In case of a fixed shape sail, lift and drag coefficients are rarely changed at all velocity conditions. However, those of the flexible sail are decreased as the incoming velocity is increased. These are understandably resulted from shape variations due to the flexible material. Therefore aero-elastic similarity should be more carefully considered in the model test rather than other similarities.
