Thermomechanical Characteristics for Structural Material of Supersonic Vehicle (초음속 비행체 구조재료에 대한 열기계적 특성)

  • The thermomechanical characteristics were evaluated for 17-4PH stainless steel widely used in supersonic airframe subjected to both aerodynamic loading and heating. The thermomechanical tests were conducted under both elevated temperature and rapid heating condition from $1^{\circ}C/sec\;to\;28^{\circ}C/sec$. The thermomechanical behaviors under rapid heating were compared with those of elevated temperature after 1/2 hour exposure in terms of yield stress to investigate the influence of heating rates. A heating rate-yield temperature parameter was suggested for rapid heating based on time-temperature parameters, and master yield stress curve was obtained by using these parameters. The experimental results and methodology from this study can be used as basic engineering data when designing supersonic vehicle structures subjected to aerodynamic loading and severe heating environment.

Analysis on Aerodynamic Heating on Spike and Dome Configuration (스파이크와 돔 형상의 공력 가열 해석)

  • Numerical analysis of aerodynamic heating for KPSAM is performed using aerodynamic heating model suitable to KPSAM, which has complex flow field resulting from the spike attached to the dome, such as large separation area and the strong shock/boundary layer interaction region around reattachment point on the dome. The aerodynamic heating model is validated and modified through the comparison between the flight test measurement and the thermal analysis results. TFD temperature sensors are installed on the dome to measure surface temperature during the flight. Computation results, obtained from the heat transfer analysis on the sensors, agree well with flight test data. The aerodynamic heating model provides heat transfer rate into surface as a boundary condition of unsteady 1D/axisymmetric thermal analysis on the missile structure. The axisymmetric thermal analysis using FLUENT is more versatile than the 1D analysis and can be applied to the heating problem related with complex structures and multi-dimensional heat transfer problems such as prediction of temperature rise at contact surface of different materials.

  • The fairing of the launch vehicles has a role of protecting the spacecraft from outer thermal, acoustical, and mechanical loads during flight. Among them, the thermal load is analyzed in the present study. The ascent thermal analyses include aerodynamic heating rate on every point of the fairing, heat transfer through the fairing and spacecraft, and the final temperature during ascent flight phase. A design code based on theoretical/experimental database is applied to calculate the aerodynamic heating rate, and a thermal math program, SINDA/Fluint, is considered for conductive heat transfer of the fairing. The results show that the present design satisfies the allowing temperature of the structure. Another important thermal problem, pyro explosive fairing separation device, is calculated because the pyro system is very sensitive to the temperature. The results also satisfies the pyro thermal condition.

Tensile Characteristics of A12024-T3 under Rapid Heating (급속가열환경에서 A12024-T3의 인장특성)

  • The thermomechanical tensile characteristics were evaluated for A12024-T3 under heating rates from $1^{\circ}C/sec\;to\;30^{\circ}C/sec$ by using an infrared heating equipment to simulate aerodynamic heating. The rapid heating test results were compared with tensile test results after 1/2 hour exposure in terms of yield stress to investigate the influence of heating condition. A heating rate-yield temperature parameter was suggested for rapid heating based on time-temperature parameters, and master yield stress curve was obtained by using these parameter. These test results can be used for margin of safety of supersonic vehicle structures subjected to aerodynamic heating.

  • The inner surface temperatures of the KSR-III Sounding Rocket launched at 29th November 2002 were measured in the flight test, and the aerodynamic heating rate and outer surface temperature were calculated. The used program is the MINIVER code, which calculate the boundary layer equation based on the theoretical analysis, and its calculation is simulated on the flight time histories. The analysis considered the inner surface heat transfer with one dimensional solid heat conduction. The results showed that the major interior heat transfer is the radiation heat transfer, and the maximum outer surface temperature due to aerodynamic heating reached to $223^{\circ}C$ at fin and the maximum heating rate is about $133kW/m^2$ at nose cap. The whole analysis proved that the surface temperature remained below the allowable temperature, and the KSR-III thermal design satisfies the thermal environmental conditions.

  • Outer surfaces of KSR-III are insulated to protect outer structure and inner payloads from the aerodynamic heating. The characteristics of insulation material (BMS 10-102), selected through careful tests and thermal analyses, are low heat transfer rate and low density. It is applied in a wet and continuous spray pattern for outer surfaces of KSR-III. In the present study, the honeycomb sandwich structure of nose fairing, which is one of the typical multi-layer structures of KSR-III, is thermally analyzed with insulation.

Improvement of Cooling Effects of Pylon Injector for Scramjet Combustor (스크램제트 연소기용 파일런 분사기 냉각성능 개선 연구)

  • A new film cooling method to protect the pylon injector from aerodynamic heating for a scramjet combustor is proposed and verified with numerical methods. The conditions for the Mach 8 flight at an altitude of 35km are considered. Air is considered as a coolant. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model are used. A downward injection of coolant from the top of the pylon gives higher cooling effects with less mass flow rate of coolant than the upward coolant injection from bottom of the pylon. Also, the downward injection shows little flow separation due to the favorable pressure gradient and does not disturb the flowfields near pylon injector, which results in reduction of pressure losses.

Effects on Tensile Strength of Base and Weld Metal of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy in Short Time Exposure to High Temperature (Ti-6Al-4V 합금의 단시간 고온 노출 시 모재 및 용접부의 인장강도 특성)

  • Since the structural temperature of a flight vehicle flying at high speed rises rapidly due to aerodynamic heating, it is necessary for optimum structural design to obtain proper material properties at high temperature by taking into account of its operational environment. For a special alloy, analysis data on strength change due to exposure time to high temperature are very limited, and most of them are for an exposure time longer than 30 minutes for long term operations. In this study, base and weld metal samples of Ti-6Al-4V alloy had been prepared and high temperature tensile tests with induction heating were performed, and then high temperature strength characteristics and strength recovery characteristics through cooling have been analyzed. Pre-tests to determine maximum heating rate were performed, and response characteristics for temperature control were confirmed. As a result, high temperature tensile strength appeared to be lower than that of room temperature, but it was higher than that of high temperature of 30 minite exposure listed in MMPDS. In strength recovery through cooling Ti-6Al-4V alloy has shown higher recovery rate compared with other alloys.

ABLATING AND CHARRING OF TWO DIMENSIONAL HEAT SHIELD MATERIALS

  • The objective of this research is to estimate two dimensional ablating and charring of heat shield materials in severe aero-thermal heat transfer. This estimation requires an accurate and rapid technique for its serious heat transfer with a moving boundary. Aerodynamic heating is obtained by an explicit relation which is a function of Mach number and air condition, while a fully implicit method is used for heat transfer calculations. Moving boundary is captured by FLIAR method which is a subgroup of VOF. Thickness of ablating and charring of heat shield, temperature of the moving surface and rate of radiation heat are calculated and compared with references. The results are in good agreement with other calculations.
