  • Purpose: This study aims to analyze the distribution of the role of adversity quotient in the estimation bias of future earnings. Adversity quotient is a cognitive ability that can be distributed as a reducer of bias effects that occur in profit forecasting or investment decision making. Research design, data and methodology: The study designs a full factorial within-subject 2×3 as a laboratory experiment. The study subjects are 30 accounting students who are proxied as investors. Results: The results show that the estimated earnings made by investors experience anchoring-adjustment heuristic bias which means the initial value becomes a basic belief that influences the decisions taken by investors. However, this study also provides evidence that heuristic bias can be reduced by the presence of adversity quotient. Investors who have high adversity ability are abler to reduce the estimation bias when compared to investors who have medium and low adversity ability so the higher the difficulty ability possessed by investors, the less likely the occurrence of bias in decision making. Conclusion: Thus, the adversity quotient is proven to be distributed as a reducing opportunity from the bias that will occur in estimating future earnings or making investment decisions.

  • The study examined the adversity quotient to determine the organizational adaptation among office workers in Korea. Participants were 202 adults who work in general offices in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Data were collected from August to October in 2013. Adversity quotient was measured using Stoltz's Adversity Quotient Profile(AQP) and Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were done. In result, adversity quotient was significantly related with emotional intelligency and resilience. Multiple regression revealed that adversity quotient emerged as the most significant predictor of organizational adaptation. Adversity Quotient Profile could be a useful tool to measure the capacity of overcoming the adversity and applied to develop the education contents or program strategies.

  • This study aimed to derive theoretical and practical implications by analyzing the relationship between adversity quotient, entrepreneurial orientation, and customer orientation, which are the internal competency of start-up entrepreneurs affecting the performance of a small business CEO. As in previous domestic studies, we deviated from analyzing internal competency as a single-dimensional functional relationship to business performance, and attempted to explain the relationship between the internal competences of start-up entrepreneurs. Empirical analysis was conducted by setting the adversity quotient as an independent variable, the entrepreneurial orientation as a parameter, and the customer orientation as a dependent variable. As a result of the analysis, first, it was found that control and ownership, which are sub-elements of adversity quotient, have a positive effect on entrepreneurial orientation and customer orientation. Second, entrepreneurial orientation was found to have a positive effect on customer orientation. Third, it was found that only the ownership of the adversity quotient had a positive effect on customer orientation through the mediating effect of entrepreneurial orientation. In other words, it was found that the entrepreneur's ownership influences customer orientation through entrepreneurial orientation. On the other hand, endurance, sub-element of adversity quotient, was found to have no significant effect on entrepreneurial orientation and customer orientation. This means that in the rapidly changing New Normal era, endurance of entrepreneur can no longer have a large impact on entrepreneurial orientation and customer orientation. This study gives implications for the entrepreneur's competencies that must be developed first and the tendency to be developed together. Furthermore, it can be helpful in policy designing start-up support programs and guidelines for investors' investment standards.

  • This study examined the effects of adversity quotient and R&D capabilities on corporate performance and the mediating role of organizational creativity influencing factors in the relationship between these variables. This study established seven hypotheses, divided the adversity quotient into control, reach, and endurance, divided organizational creativity influencing factors into organizational resources and creative management practices, and divided corporate performance into management performance and technical performance. This study distributed 1,000 One hundred and sixteenquestionnaires to CEOs working at small and medium-sized technology start-ups in Gyeonggi-do and collected 122 copies under anonymous names. 116 questionnaires were used for hypothesis testing, excluding 6 cases in which responses were unfaithful or omitted. The results of this study are as follows. First, it was found that reach among the adversity quotient was positively related to organizational resources. Second, among the adversity quotient, control was found to have a positive(+) effect on management performance and technical performance, respectively. Third, organizational management practices were found to have a positive(+) effect on management performance. Fifth, organizational resources were found to partially mediate the relationship between control and technical performance, and to fully mediate the relationship between reach and technical performance. Finally, this study discussed the theoretical and practical implications of the research results.

  • Stoltz's AQP is a tool to estimate the level of adversity. The purpose of study is to test the reliability and validity of AQP. The participants were 297 nurses of tertiary hospital in Korea. Data were collected from Aug. to Oct. 2013. Resilience Scale was used as criterion of AQP. Cronbach's alpha test, item total correlation, exploratory factor, correlation analysis, and ANOVA test were used. In result, factor analysis was accounted for four factors explaining 56.256% of total variance and corresponding factors were factor 1 (Control, 10.7%), factor 2 (Ownership, 13.7%), factor 3(Reach, 17.4%), factor 4 (Endurance, 14.9%). The internal consistency was acceptable (Cronbach's alpha=.84). Four factors were positively correlated with RS. AQP is a reliable and valid instrument to measure for adversity quotient in Korean nurse.

  • This study analyzed 183 for dental hygienists working at dental hospitals and clinics in Daegu to survey organizational socialization of them. The adversity index of the study subjects averaged 58.60±9.16 points out of a total score of 100, with the highest individual initiative of 16.58±3.09 points, and a low of 13.86±3.66 points for continuity of the situation. Organizational socialization averaged 123.40±12.82 points out of 190, with the highest personal characteristics of 30.37±3.71 points, and the lowest occupational identity of 10.34±1.94. The adversity index of the participants was significantly higher in graduate school or higher (F=3.112, p=0.047), the lower the intensity of their work (F=2.860, p=0.060), and the more often the degree of turnover (F=5.196, p<0.006). In organizational socialization, age (F=9.290, p<0.001), educational background (F=8.655, p<0.001), and higher position (F=5.425, p=0.005) were significantly higher when working in hospitals (F=4.534, p=0.012). The higher the position (F=5.425, p=0.005), the higher the work experience (F=5.320, p=0.002), the lower the turnover (F=22.935, p<0.001), and the highrer the intensity of the work(F=7.02, p<0.001). The study subjects' organizational socialization showed a significant correlation with the adverse event index (r=0.395, p<0.000). The regression analysis using organizational socialization as a dependent variable showed that the degree of turnover (β=0.300, p<0.001) had a significant effect on organizational socialization. The total explanatory power of this variable was 41.6%, with significant effects on individual initiative (β=0.255, p<0.000) and personal control (β=0.180, p<0.009) among the adverse events index. The above findings confirmed that a high adverse event index of dental hygienists has the effect of increasing organizational socialization. Dental hygienists' adversity index is average, meaning they live a smooth life in smooth conditions, however, when major adversity arises, organizational socialization is highly necessary. In addition, to strengthen the organizational socialization of new dental hygienists, as well as experienced dental hygienists, a customized program should be administered to raise the adverse index of dental hygienists, and provide a human management tool through regular confirmation of the program.
