According to the conventional studies on the noise and cardiovascular effect, railway noise is better associated with hypertension and adverse cardiovascular events than road traffic noise. But the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated the hypothesis that exposure to acute railway noise would the unfavorable effect of cardiovascular and autonomic system in healthy young subjects. Using a randomized, sham-controlled cross-over design, ten subjects were assigned to receive either an exposure to high speed train noise (84 dB) for 30 minutes or a control condition (non noise), separated by two days. Blood pressure, heart rate, augmentation index and heart rate variability as indices of cardiovascular and autonomic system function were measured at baseline, during, and recovery from two trials. The results show that exposure to acute railway noise significantly increased diastolic blood pressure and augmentation index, which may cause of adverse cardiovascular effects.
The World Health Organization(WHO) has reported the sleep disturbance as one of the adverse effects of noise. And the effect of combined noise sources on human have been investigated because community noises are seldom heard and are concurrent. Therefore, the effects of combined noise source and its S/N ratio on sleep disturbance were investigated; as a single noise source, road traffic noise was selected, and construction and movie noise were combined with road traffic noise. Tests for sleep disturbance were conducted in bedrooms and the effect on each subjects' sleep was evaluated by questionnaire. The results showed that the rate of awakening increased slightly only when the SPL of construction noise was 10 dB higher than that of road traffic noise. It was also found that the sleep disturbance was affected by the type of combined noise sources and its S/N ratio.
Airborne noise is one of the considerable environmental factors for navy ship personnel who should accomplish their tasks in restricted ship spaces against adverse health effect of noise. However, it is difficult to find studies on actual condition of airborne noise for navy ships. In this study, we measured airborne noise levels at 379 compartments of 33 Korean navy ships. Using the measured data, we presented mean values and their standard deviations of measured noise levels with factors of ship type, compartment category, and operation mode. Additionally, we evaluated the mean value and cumulative probability of airborne noise levels of compartments with those of the US navy ships. These results can be rationally used in making the proper airborne noise criteria of the navy ship for the future.
Studies on community annoyance caused by transportation noise exposure were carried out in fifty-one areas around Gimpo and Gimhae international airports, Gyungbu and Honam railway lines and east and riverside-northen motorway to accumulate social survey data and to assess the relationship between each transportation noise level and degree of annoyance in Korea. The measurements of transpotation noise were carried out using portable precision sound level meters (B&K type 2238 and LD 812) except in aircraft noise. Aircraft noise levels were measured automatically by airport noise monitoring system, B&K type 35n Social surveys were carried out to people living around noise measurement points. Questionnaires were only aggregated by face-to-face interviews using various questions concerned with demographic factors, degree of noise annoyance, interference with daily activities and health-related symptoms. The questions of noise annoyance were answered on an 11-point numerical scale. The respondents, from 18 to 70 years of age, were randomly selected and completed the questionnaire for themselves. The total number of respondents for the questionnaires was 1,839. The results showed that community annoyance of railway noise in Korea is similar to that in Japan, but is more severe than that in European countries.
Recently, the speed of a train has been increased. So the trains are being exposed to wind more severely than before. Because of the operation of high speed trains and lightweight of the train, risks of train derailment have being increased. In this study, aerodynamic effects of a newly designed high speed train, HEMU-400x, are evaluated. For aerodynamic effect evaluation, analysis method is selected by examining the safety standards for high speed train. The condition of aerodynamic effects is selected by adverse effect conditions. In order to calculate $C_s$ coefficients, numerical analysis is conducted. Using $C_s$ coefficients, the side force is calculated. Through dynamics analysis, derailment and wheel unloading are obtained. Using these results, derailment evaluation is performed.
Due to merits cost and efficiency, the transformer-less type photovoltaic (PV) inverters have been popularized in the solar market. However, the leakage current flowing through a parasitic capacitor between PV array and ground can cause adverse effect in the transformer-less PV system. In this paper, a bi-directional PV inverter with high efficiency and low noise is proposed for the PV system with an energy storage device. The proposed inverter is a transformer-less type and performs the bi-directional power control between dc sources and grid with high efficiency. In addition, the proposed inverter can suppress the leakage current and obtain low noise characteristic. Finally, 3-kW prototype was implemented to confirm validity of the proposed inverter.
In a transmission or geared rotor system a coupled phenomenon of lateral and torsional vibrations may occur due to the gear meshing effect. Particularly, in high speed or low vibration and low noise applications of geared rotor systems a coupled rotordynamic analysis is required to precisely predict their dynamic characteristics. In this paper a generalized finite element model of a gear pair element is developed, which actively couples the lateral and torsional vibrations due to the gear meshing effect. In the modeling the generalized forces due to the transmission error. geometrical eccentricities. and unbalances in the gear system are also considered. Then. using the developed gear pair element model a coupled unforced rotordynamic analysis is performed with a prototype 800 RT turbo-chiller rotor-bearing system having a hull-pinion speed increasing gear. Results show that the torsional vibration characteristics experience some changes due to the gear meshing and lateral dynamic coupling effect, but that they have no adverse effect and the lateral ones have no practical changes in an operating speed range.
This study presents the reconstruction of sound field radiated from an automotive engine using equivalent sources. Basic concept of the method presented is to replace the engine noise source with elementary sources of multipoles, e.g., monopoles and dipoles. The so-called Helmholtz equation least-squares (HELS) method can reconstruct the sound radiation fields from spherical geometries in a series expansion of spherical Hankel functions and spherical harmonics. In this paper, multi-Point, multipole equivalent sources are employed to reconstruct the sound field radiated from an automotive engine with a fixed rotation speed. To ensure and improve the accuracy of reconstruction, the spatial filters of multipole coefficients and wave-vectors are adopted for suppressing the adverse effect of high-order multipoles. Optimal filter shapes are designed with regularization parameters minimizing the generalized cross validation (GCV) function between actual and reproduced model. After regeneration of field pressures using the proposed method as many as necessary, the vibro-acoustic field of an engine could be reconstructed by using the BEM-based near-field acoustic holography (NAH) technique in a cost-effective manner.
The aims of the present study are two-fold: 1) to explore differences on speech perception between younger and older adults according to noise conditions; and 2) to investigate which cognitive domains are correlated with speech perception. Data were acquired from 15 younger adults and 15 older adults. Sentence recognition test was conducted in four noise conditions(i.e., in-quiet, +5 dB SNR, 0 dB SNR, -5 dB SNR). All participants completed auditory and cognitive assessment. Upon controlling for hearing thresholds, the older group revealed significantly poorer performance compared to the younger adults only under the high noise condition at -5 dB SNR. For older group, performance on Seoul Verbal Learning Test(immediate recall) was significantly correlated with speech perception performance, upon controlling for hearing thresholds. In older adults, working memory and verbal short-term memory are the best predictors of speech-in-noise perception. The current study suggests that consideration of cognitive function for older adults in speech perception assessment is necessary due to its adverse effect on speech perception under background noise.
Purpose: Thermal sensation or thermal comfort was randomly used in many studies which focused on combined effects of thermal and acoustic environments on human perception. However, thermal sensation and thermal comfort are not synonyms. Thermal comfort is more complex human perception on thermal environment than thermal sensation. This study aims to investigate effects of noise on thermal sensation and thermal comfort separately, and also to investigate effects of temperature on acoustic sensation and comfort. Method: Combined thermal and acoustic configurations were simulated in an indoor environmental chamber. Twenty four participants were exposed to two types of noise (fan and babble) with two noise levels (45 dBA and 60 dBA) for an hour in each thermal condition of PMV-1.53, 0.03, 1.53, 1.83, respectively. Temperature sensation, temperature preference, thermal comfort, noisiness, loudness, annoyance, acoustic comfort, indoor environmental comfort were evaluated in each combined environmental condition. Result: Noise did not affected thermal sensation, but thermal comfort significantly. Temperature had an effect on acoustic comfort significantly, but no effect on noisiness and loudness in overall data analysis. More explicit interactions between thermal condition and noise perception showed only with the noise level of 60 dBA. Impacts of both thermal comfort and acoustic comfort on the indoor environmental comfort were analyzed. In adverse thermal environments, thermal comfort had more impact than acoustic comfort on indoor environmental comfort, and in neutral thermal environments, acoustic comfort had more important than thermal comfort.
