  • The Z-map is a special farm of discrete non-parametric representation in which the height values at grid points on the xy-plane are stored as a 2D array z[ij]. While the z-map is the simplest farm of representing sculptured surfaces and is the most versatile scheme for modeling non-parametric objects, its practical application in industry (eg, tool-path generation) has aroused much controversy over its weaknesses, namely its inaccuracy, singularity (eg, vertical wall), and some excessive storage needs. Much research or the application of the z-map can be found in various articles, however, research on the systematic analysis of sculptured surface shape representation via the z-map model is rather rare. Presented in this paper are the following: shape modeling power of the simple z-map model, exact (within tolerance) z-map representation of sculptured surfaces which have some feature-shapes such as vertical-walls and real sharp-edges by adopting some complementary z-map models, and some application examples.

  • In this paper, we examine the points of similarity and difference between Korea, Japan, and the USA in terms of the spin-off effects of space technology on cultural life. In Japan and the USA, spin-off effects of space development research by government funded research centers are diffusive while in Korea they are interruptive. Spin-offs of research results impact cultural life via technology transfer and commercialization in businesses. This is because the Korean aerospace industry has progressed largely based on an overall system, but the promotion of internal parts and sub-systems, which can trigger technological development and spin-off effects in manufacturing, has been neglected. In the case of the KARI, the government funded research center, we argue that it is necessary for KARI to devote more resources to transfer (or promote spin-offs of) space technology to small and medium-sized businesses and other industries.

  • Along with the rapid development of automobile industry in this country the necessity of high quality braking material is ever increased to maintain the comfortness as well as the safety the passengers. Asbestos-based friction materials are banned in the developed countries because of their cancer-inducing effect. This study focuses on the development of non-acbestos friction material with acceptable properties such as wear resistant high temperature endurant and low-noise enducing. We have all the intermediate test results indicating the contribution of each additives. These are qualitatively analyzed. Manufacturing processes such as opening of the kevlar and degasing at elevated temperature is equally important to attain proper level of friction quality.

  • Recently, the demand of high-productivity injection mold increases since the consumption of packaging grows in the world. Stack mold is composed of more than two molds and it has very high productivity and economic efficiency. In advanced country, stack mold which has $4Level{\times}96cavity$ was developed already but, in occasion of domestic mold industry, there is no study of stack mold. In this study, stack mold which has $2Level{\times}4cavity$ is developed for securing the technique of manufacturing high-productivity mold.

  • The investigation deals with the manufacturing process design and deformation analysis for seamless pressure vessels Axisymmetric multistage deep drawing is a complex and important sheet metal forming process in the industry. In this study the process design for large size cylindrical shells with various thickness is performed and a general guideline for forming process design of pressure vessels will be suggested. Thus in this paper for the verification of the forming process design the forming analysis of pressure vessels will be carried out by PAM-STAMP which is on the basis of finite element analysis. In this case the formability of pressure vessels is evaluated using the results of computer simulation.

  • Recently the machine industry is rapidly advanced for improving productivity. Especially an effort decreased error factors of machine tool continuously is being studied. In this paper, we propose a method that decreased vibration in the high speed spindle. By appling 6-sigma technique(DMADOV), we can grasp the influence between the housing design and a rotation accuracy. For a correct conclusion, we measure an actual spindle and analysis by $ARMD^{(R)}$(rotation analysis program). inally we find out influenceable design factors and the improvement condition about 20.7%.

  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, manufacturing process and new materials development for solving the fatigue fracture problem attendant upon high strength of suspension of automobile are actively advanced. In this paper, the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in high temperatures($100^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings. (1)Compressive residual stress decreases in high temperature, that is, with increasing temperature. (2)The effect of compressive residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior in high temperature increases below $\Delta$K=17~19MPa (3)It was investigated by SEM that the constraint of compressive residual stress for plastic zone of fatigue crack tip was decreased in high temperature as compared with room temperature.

  • This paper is to introduce the definition and background of EDMS and present real customer project in manufacturing industry as reference. EDMS has DM, Workflow, Imaging and COLD as key components and should be interconnected with many advanced technology, such as SAP, PDM and KMS. Managing and controlling documents is an important part of business success. The number of electronic documents in use in the workplace is escalating rapidly, making it difficult for conventional IT systems to take full advantage of the benefits of digital documentation "A"company implemented DM and Workflow based on groupware So, all of SPECs and drawings could be easily stored and accessed via LMS. Also, the cycletime of ECN/DCN process could be reduced to one or two days from one or two weeks more The overhead resources from the managing documents and involving with work process could be re-deployed to the more productive positions and the increasing of revenue is expected soon because of the competitiveness. "A"company is expected to have more benefits, that is, lots of tangible and intangible benefits from now on.

  • Using transportations like railway, aviations and roads has been increasing continuously. Traffic accidents have been increasing as well. To prevent or lessen these accidents become a big issue to solve. Therefore, more enforced safety levels are being required to meet. In railway field, continuous efforts of railway safety are being executed to prevent traffic accidents. In present, a railway accident has been decreasing since subway accident happened in Daegu Subway in 2003. However, safety levels in railway field have not yet achieved as much as in advanced countries. Basic concept for enforced safety level in railway system is to prevent or minimize accidents by managing systems like related facilities, management method, organization, education. This is the same concept to minimize error rate in six sigma theory. In this paper, we are to apply six sigma techniques used in manufacturing industry to railway safety and go through ways to make more efficient railway safety system.
