The effects of adsorption and desorption of alkali-metals on Si(111) surface were investigated by using AES and RHEED-system. The adsorption system is a fundamental interest because of its unique electronic properties such as measurement of work function change, adatom-core level shift. It was found that the growth node of K on Si(111) surface was layer by layer growth and the saturation coverage was 2.0ML at room temperature. Superstructure changes on Si(111) surface according to the alkali-metal thickness and substrate temperatures were accurately defined. By applying the isothermal desorption method, the desorption energies of Li/Si(111) and K/Si(111) surfaces was measured. On Li/Si(111) and K/Si(111) surfaces, the desorption energies were 3.07 eV, 2.19 eV respectively.
In order to establish the design parameters of adsorption for arsenic compounds with hydrotalcite including chlorine ion, the basic properties of adsorption and desorption as well as the oxidation of As (III) were examined in batch tests. The maximum adsorption capacities of arsenite and arsenate were 6.2 mg-As(III)/g and 103 mg-As (V)/g, respectively. Although 80.4% of maximum desorption was shown in 20% NaOH solution, 5~10% of NaOH was recommended considering operating benefits, where the proper condition of the desorption was in the range of 73% to 80%. The most suitable desorption condition was in the combination of NaCl (10~20%) and NaOH (5~10%). Within 2 minutes, As (III) was easily oxidized to As (V) with 0.0001 N KMnO4, where the maximum oxidization ratio was shown to 98.9%.

The interaction of hydrogen with ZnO single crystal surfaces, ZnO (0001), ZnO (000-1), and ZnO (10-10) has been investigated using temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. When the ZnO single crystal surfaces are exposed to atomic hydrogen at 200 K, all three surfaces show hydrogen desorption at 450 K. ZnO (0001) surface shows hydrogen desorption feature at ~260 K as the hydrogen exposure is increased. The ZnO (10-10) surface shows low-temperature desorption feature first and the high-temperature desorption feature appears as the hydrogen exposure increases. The ZnO (000-1) surface does not show any lower temperature hydrogen desorption. We will report the adsorption configuration of hydrogen atoms on ZnO single crystal surfaces with different surfaces structures.
Mo-99(Molybdenum) is the only source of Tc-99m(Technetium) which is most frequently used in nuclear medical diagnostics and the demand is on the increase recently. Separation and refining of Mo-99 was investigated by adsorption and desorption on alumina. At pH=0.63, adsorption isotherm of Mo was fitted by Redlich & Peterson equation using the adsorption experimental data. It was found that the pore diffusion model ($D_p=1.4{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/s, K_f/=0.4 cm/s$) agreed well with batch adsorption experimental data. RTDs(Residence Time Distributions ) were measured and axial dispersion coefficients were obtained in the fixed bed absorber according to the changes of the flow rate using 0.05% -NaCl. From the adsorption experimental data, it was shown that the behavior of breakthroughs depended on flow rate. Mo recovery yield was increased as adsorption flow rate was increased and desorption flow rate was decreased.
Adsorption is a major process causing the accumulation of arsenic onto soil. Therefore, further understanding of the adsorption/desorption characteristics of arsenic species on soil is essential for predicting their fate and preparing appropriate remediation strategy to remove arsenic from soil. In this study, the column adsorption/desorption experiment has been performed with As(III) and As(V) on soil. Experiment with As(III) was conducted under reducing condition, whereas that with As(V) was under oxidizing condition. Most of As(III) was remained on the oxidation state during the experiment. The results showed that the adsorption/desorption rate of As(III) was higher than that of As(V). Adsorption and desorption of arsenic species were not completely reversible in the column experiment. It was also found that As(V) in the column experiment was adsorbed more rapidly on soil than in the batch experiment.
Adsorption and desorption characteristics of the representative 10 kinds components consisting of gasoline vapor on activated carbon were investigated at the temperature range of $-30^{\circ}C{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. The breakthrough curves of each vapors obtained by the Thomas model were well described the breakthrough experimental results of this study. The breakthrough times of each vapors were correlated with the molecular weight, density, and vapor pressure. The breakthrough times had greater correlation with boiling point than molecular weight and density. The slope of the breakthrough curve was a proportional relationship with the rate constant (k) of Thomas model expression. The higher the slope of the breakthrough curve, the rate constant was larger. The biggest slope vapor had the smallest adsorption capacity ($q_e$). Adsorption and desorption characteristics of mixed vapor similar to the gasoline vapor were studied at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). The mixed vapor consisting of 9 components; group A (pentane, hexene, hexane), group B (benzene, toluene), group C (octane, ethylbenzene, xylene, nonane) was examined. Group A was not nearly adsorbed because of substitution by group C, and the desorption capacity of group A was smaller than group C. The adsorbed substances were confirmed to be Group C.
Toluene desorption of modified activated carbon for microwave irradiation was evaluated. As a virgin GAC reacted from microwave energy, it created an "arcing" between GAC particles in desorption process. The arcing became more and more vigorous and achieved a red flame of GAC. The silica coated GAC(Si/GAC) was developed to prevent arcing phenomenon and temperature control problem. The result shows virgin GAC with 5wt%, 10wt% and 20wt% silica had no arcing and could control temperature very well. However, the adsorption rate of Si/GAC was decreased by coated silica amount due to decreasing surface area of GAC. The 5wt% Si/GAC adsorption rate was quite similar to virgin GAC adsorption rate. After adsorption, the toluene-loaded GAC and Si/GAC was reactivated by 2450MHz MW irradiation with 300W for 5 min. Quantitative desorption of the toluene was achieved at MW irradiation at 300W with desorption efficiencies as high as 98.59% to 84.65%% after four cycles.

A study have been conducted for the adsorption and desorption characteristics of Cu ion using manganese nodule as adsorbent. For 100 ppm Cu ion solution, the adsorbed amount of Cu ion was more than 90 % at equilibrium state. Adsorption was equilibrated in 42 hours the adsorption reaction was shown to be first order reaction. For the desorption reaction of Cu ion in the region of solution pH 3.5~9.5, the desorption was completed in the acidic region, but it has been decreased as the pH was raised. Also, the desorption rate was higher in the acidic region compared with alkaline region. The desorbed amount was decreased as the reaction temperature increased, therefore, the desorption reaction was thought to be exothermic. Also, several thermodynamic properties were calculated based on experimental results and compared with theoretically driven values. To see the effect of complexing agent on the desorption of Cu ion, EDTA was introduced and the des orbed amount increased in the presence of EDTA.
We have studied the adsorption of contaminations on the MgO protective layer by Thermal Desorption Spectrometry (TDS). The result shows that the increase in exposure time, MgO thickness and humidity multiply the quantity of adsorbed contaminations. It is also found that the desorption activation energy and contamination quantity is decreased by the additional firing process of MgO layer under oxygen environment.
This paper describes the adsorption/desorpton efficiency of a modified activated carbon by irradiated microwave to treat toluene. By employing microwave energy, the regeneration time was considerably shortened compared with conventional thermal heating regeneration. New adsorbent called ACB (Activated Carbon-Bentonite) was prepared from powder activated carbon with mixing bentonite as a binder. Specific surface area, average pore size and total pore volume of ACB were calculated from the nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm. The surface of ACB was characterized with scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results showed that the specific surface area, total pore volume, average pore size of ABC was not influenced by regenerating cycle with microwave irradiation. Toluene was adsorbed onto ACB which desorbed by MW irradiation. Absorption capacity of ACB was 0.117 $g_{toluene}/g_{ACB}$. Desorption efficiency of toluene increased as higher microwave output was applied.
