A CNT-$TiO_2$ nano composite was prepared from titanium chloride ($TiCl_4$) via sol-gel process using multi walled carbon nano tube (MWCNT) followed by calcination at $450^{\circ}C$. Spectral analysis revealed that the formed $TiO_2$ resided on the carbon in anatase form. The effect of adsorption was investigated using aqueous solution of methylene blue and procion blue dye. The photochemical reaction of CNT-$TiO_2$ composite in aqueous suspensions was studied under UV illumination in batch process. The reaction was investigated by monitoring the discoloration of the dyes employing UV-Visible spectro-photometeric technique as a function of irradiation time. The catalyst composites were found to be efficient for the photodegradation of the dye.
Assisted by the highly sensitive confocal microprobe Raman spectrometer and proper surface roughening procedure, the Raman investigation on the adsorption and reaction of methanol was performed on Pt-Ru electrodes with different coverages. A detailed description of the roughening process of the Pt electrodes and the underpotential deposition of the Ru was given. Reasonably good Raman signal reflecting the metal-carbon vibration and CO vibration was detected. The appearance of vibrations of the Ru oxides, together with the existence of Ru-C, Pt-C and CO bands, clearly demonstrates the participation of the bi-functional mechanism during the oxidation process of methanol on Pt-Ru electrodes. The Pt-Ru electrode was found to have a higher catalytic activity over Pt electrodes. This preliminary study shows that electrochemical Raman spectroscopy can be applied to the study of rough electrode surface.
In this study, catalytic activation using sulfuric acid lignin (SAL), the condensed solid by-product from saccharification process, with potassium hydroxide at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in order to investigate its potential to nanoporous carbon In this study, catalytic activation using sulfuric acid lignin (SAL), the condensed solid by-product from saccharification process, with potassium hydroxide at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in order to investigate its potential to nanoporous carbon material. Comparison study was also conducted by production of activated carbon from coconut shell (CCNS), Pinus, and Avicel, and each activated carbon was characterized by chemical composition, Raman spectroscopy, SEM analysis, and BET analysis. The amount of solid residue after thermogravimetric analysis of biomass samples at the final temperature of $750^{\circ}C$ was SAL > CCNS > Pinus > Avicel, which was the same as the order of activated carbon yields after catalytic activation. Specifically, SAL-derived activated carbon showed the highest value of carbon content (91.0%) and $I_d/I_g$ peak ratio (4.2), indicating that amorphous large aromatic structure layer was formed with high carbon fixation. In addition, the largest changes was observed in SAL with the maximum BET specific surface area and pore volume of $2341m^2/g$ and $1.270cm^3/g$, respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption test for three kinds of organic pollutants (phenol, 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and carbofuran) were conducted, and an excellent adsorption capacity more than 90 mg/g for all activated carbon was determined using 100 ppm of the standard solution. Therefore, SAL, a condensed structure, can be used not only as a nanoporous carbon material with high specific surface area but also as a biosorbent applied to a carbon filter for remediation of organic pollutants in future.

Nanostructured oxides are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis where their catalytic properties are closely associated with the size and morphology at nanometer level. The effect of particle size has been well decumented in the past two decades, but the shape of the nanoparticles has rarely been concerned. Here we illustrate that the redox and acidic-basic properties of oxides are largely dependent on their shapes by taking $Co_3O_4$, $Fe_2O_3$, $CeO_2$ and $La_2O_3$ nanorods as typical examples. The catalytic activities of these rod-shaped oxides are mainly governed by the nature of the exposed crystal planes. For instance, the predominant presence of {110} planes which are rich in active $Co^{3+}$ on $Co_3O_4$ nanorods led to a much higher activity for CO oxidation than the nanoparticles that mainly exposed the {111} planes. The simultaneous exposure of iron and oxygen ions on the surface of $Fe_2O_3$ nanorods have significantly enhanced the adsorption and activation of NO and thereby promoted the efficiency of DeNOx process. Moreover, the exposed surface planes of these rod-shaped oxides mediated the reaction performance of the integrated metal-oxide catalysts. Au/$CeO_2$ catalysts exhibited outstanding stability under water-gas shift conditions owing to the strong bonding of gold particle on the $CeO_2$ nanorods where the formed gold-ceria interface was resistant towards sintering. Cu nanoparticles dispersed on $La_2O_3$ nanorods efficiently catalyzed transfer dehydrogenation of primary aliphatic alcohols based on the uniue role of the exposed {110} planes on the support. Morphology control at nanometer level allows preferential exposure of the catalytically active sites, providing a new stragegy for the design of highly efficient nanostructured catalysts.
Dealuminated and alkali/alkaline-earth metal exchanged Y-type and ZSM-5 zeolites were prepared as catalytic materials. Comparing with the composition of starting material, the magnitude of Si/Al ratio was increased after dealumination and cation exchange process. The ratio of Si/Al on surface was appeared to be larger than that in bulk. The destruction of basic frame in catalysts observed was understood to be due to a detachment of aluminum, which results in reducing framework while increasing non-framework. This phenomenon becomes more serious with increasing time of steam treatment and even more significant for the cation exchanged catalysts. The desorption peaks of the NO-TPD profiles taken after dealumination and cation exchanged Y-type and ZSM-5 zeolites shifted to the low temperature region. It was also found that the longer the steam treatment time, the degree of shift toward low temperature region was increased. The catalytic activities are dependent on the nature of cation exchanged, the ratio of Si/Al and the ratio of framework/non-framework by a change in basic frame.
The present work studied the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO to $N_2$ by $NH_3$ over $V/TiO_2$ focusing on NOx control for the stationary sources. The SCR process depends mainly on the catalyst performance. The reaction characteristics of SCR with $V/TiO_2$ catalysts were closely examined at low and high temperature. In addition, adsorption and desorption characteristics of the reactants on the catalyst surface were investigated with ammonia. Seven different $TiO_2$ supports containing the same loading of vanadia were packed in a fixed bed reactor respectively. The interaction between $TiO_2$ and vanadia would form various non-stoichiometric vanadium oxides, and showed different reaction activities. There were optimum calcination temperatures for each samples, indicating different reactivity. It was finally found from the $NH_3-TPD$ test that the SCR activity was nothing to do with $NH_3$ adsorption amount.
Manganese (Mn) catalysts were generated using $CeO_2$ and $ZrO_2$supports synthesized by the supercritical hydrothermal method and two different Mn precursors, aimed at an application for a low-temperature selective catalytic reduction process. Manganese acetate (MA) and manganese nitrate (MA) were used as Mn precursors. Effects of the kind and the concentration of the Mn precursor used for catalyst generation on the NOx removal efficiency were investigated. The characteristics of the generated catalysts were analyzed using $N_2$ adsorption-desorption, thermo-gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. De-NOx experiments were carried out to measure NOx removal efficiencies of the catalysts. NOx removal efficiencies of the catalysts generated using MA were superior to those of the catalysts generated using MN at every temperature tested. Analyses of the catalyst characteristics indicated that the higher NOx removal efficiencies of the MA-derived catalysts stemmed from the higher oxygen mobility and the stronger interaction with support material of $Mn_2O_3$ produced from MA than those of $MnO_2$ produced from MN.
Heterogeneously-catalyzed oxidation of aqueous phase trichloroethylene (TCE) over supported metal oxides has been conducted to establish an approach to eliminate ppm levels of organic compounds in water. A continuous flow reactor system was designed to effect predominant reaction parameters in determining catalytic activity of the catalysts for wet TCE decomposition as a model reaction. 5 wt.% $CoO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst exhibited a transient period in activity vs. on-stream time behavior, suggesting that the surface structure of the $CoO_x$ might be altered with on-stream hours; regardless, it is probable to be the most promising catalyst. Not only could the bare support be inactive for the wet decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, but no TCE removal also occurred by the process of adsorption on $TiO_2$ surface. The catalytic activity was independent of all particle sizes used, thereby representing no mass transfer limitation in intraparticle diffusion. Very low TCE conversion appeared for $TiO_2$-supported $NiO_x$ and $CrO_x$ catalysts. Wet oxidation performance of supported Cu and Fe catalysts, obtained through an incipient wetness and ion exchange technique, was dependent primarily on the kinds of the metal oxides, in addition to the acidic solid supports and the preparation routes. 5 wt.% $FeO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst gave no activity in the oxidation reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, while 1.2 wt.% Fe-MFI was active for the wet decomposition depending on time on-stream. The noticeable difference in activity of the both catalysts suggests that the Fe oxidation states involved to catalytic redox cycle during the course of reaction play a significant role in catalyzing the wet decomposition as well as in maintaining the time on-stream activity. Based on the results of different $CoO_x$ loadings and reaction temperatures for the decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$ with $CoO_x/TiO_2$, the catalyst possessed an optimal $CoO_x$ amount at which higher reaction temperatures facilitated the catalytic TCE conversion. Small amounts of the active ingredient could be dissolved by acidic leaching but such a process gave no appreciable activity loss of the $CoO_x$ catalyst.

HI decomposition was conducted using Pt/C-based catalysts with a fixed-bed reactor in the range of 573 K to 773 K. To examine the change of the characteristic properties of the catalysts, $N_2$ adsorption analyser, a X-ray diffractometer(XRD), and a scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were used before and after the HI decomposition reaction. the effect of Pt loading on HI decomposition was investigated by $CO_2$-TPD. HI conversion of all catalysts increased as decomposition temperature increased. The XRD analysis showed that the sizes of platinum particle became larger and agglomerated into a lump during the reaction. From $CO_2$-TPD, it can be concluded that the cause for the increase in catalytic activity may be attributed to the basic sites of catalyst surface. The results of both b desorption and gasification reaction showed the restriction on the use of Pt/C-based catalyst.

Highly ordered pure-silica MCM-41 materials possessing well-defined morphology have been successfully prepared with surfactant used as a template. The fabrication of mesoporous silica has received considerable attention due to the need to develop more efficient materials' for catalysis, separations, and chemical sensing. The surface modified MCM-41 was used as anadsorbent for biomolecules. Silica-supported organic groups and DNA adsorption on surface modified MCM-41 were investigated by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectrometer, respectively. The use of MCM-41 as the modification of electrode surfaces were investigated electrochemical properties of metal mediators with biomolecules. The modified ITO electrodes increased peak currents for a redox process of $[Ru(bpy)_3]^{2+}$ relative to the bare electrode. The electrochemical detection of DNA by cyclic voltammetry when the current is saturated in the presence of the mediator appeared more sensitive due to a higher catalytic current on the MCM-41 supported electrodes modified by carboxylic acid functional groups. The carboxyl or amine groups on the surface of MCM-41 interact and react with the $-NH_2$ groups of guanine and backbone, respectively. Highly ordered mesoporous materials with organic groups could find applications as DNA sensors.
