  • A batch experiment was conducted to evaluate the removal capacity of welsh onion(Allium fistulosum L.), shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.) roots as an adsorbent for Ni and Pb in aqueous solution. One gram of the dried Allium root powder was reacted in 100ml of solution containing 10mg of each heavy metal and effects of metal concentration, pH, temperature, and size of adsorbent on the removal efficiency were evaluated. The results were as follows ; The amount of adsorption of heavy metal ions were higher with the smaller particles size of adsorbent. Garlic root was high adsorption capacity of Pb, especially. The higher concentration of heavy metal solution was, the more amount of adsorption of heavy metals was. The adsorption ratio was differed from a kind of heavy metal. As the temperature increased, the amount of adsorption of Ni and Pb by shallot and welsh onion were decreased. The amount of adsorption of Ni was high under alkali conditions but the amount of adsorption of Pb was high under neutral and acidity condition.

  • A feasibility study has been conducted regarding the application of waste coffee grounds as an adsorbent for the treatment of nickel ion containing wastewater. The major variables which considered to influence the adsorbability of nickel ion were its initial concentration, reaction temperature, pH, and coexisting ion. The specific surface area of coffee grounds used in the experiment was found to be ca. $39.67m^2/g$, which suggesting its potential applicability as an adsorbent due to its relatively high surface area. In the experimental conditions, more than 90% of the initial amount of nickel ion was shown to adsorb within 15 minutes and equilibrium in adsorption was attained after 3 hours. The adsorption behavior of nickel ion was well explained by Freundlich model and kinetics study showed that the adsorption reaction was second-order. Adsorption was reduced with temperature and its change of enthalpy in standard state was estimated to be -807.05 kJ/mol. Arrhenius equation was employed for the calculation of the activation energy of adsorption and nickel ion was observed to adsorb on coffee grounds exoentropically based on thermodynamic estimations. As pH rose, the adsorption of nickel ion was diminished presumably due to the formation of cuboidal complex with hydroxide ion and the coexistence of cadmium ion was found to decrease the amount of nickel ion adsorption, which was proportional to the concentration of cadmium ion.

  • Even if odorous compounds remained very low concentration in water, it caused strong odor. Because Geosmin and most of odorous compound had very vaporization, those were difficult to analyze with GC/MSD and Purge & Trap. So, we needed pre-treatment method for decreasing amounts of extracting solvents, improving recovery efficiencies and increasing analytical efficiencies. This study developed efficient technology for analyzing odorous compounds, using various adsorbents and extracting solvents. The optimum adsorbent was XAD resins. Especially, XAD-2, XAD-7 and XAD-2010 were superior, but XAD-2 of these and MTBE was the optimum extraction solvent. Other extraction solvent's efficiency was in order of MTBE>Dichloromethane>n-Hexane>Diethylether. The optimum NaCl dosage for increasing efficiency was 5g in liquid-liquid extraction method. The shaking time(0∼24hr) had no concern with adsorption efficiency. The optimum adsorbent was XAD-2 resin and extraction solvent was MTBE. Dosing NaCl, adsorption efficiency was increased in liquid-liquid extraction method, but NaCl has no effect on liquid-solid extraction method. In this experimental results, this method will apply to not only Geosmin but other well-known odorous compounds (2-MIB, IBMP, IPMP, TCA) and algae toxins (Mycrocystin, Anatoxin etc)

  • Discrete-variational(DV)-$X{\alpha}$ method was applied to investigate the electronic structures of spinel- type manganese oxide which is well known to the high performance adsorbent or cathode material for lithium ion. The results of DOS(density of states) and Mulliken population analysis showed that Li was nearly fully ionized and interactions between Mn and O were strong covalent bond. The effective charge of Li and Mn was +0.77 and +1.44 respectively and the overlap population between Mn and O was 0.252 in $LiMn_2O_4$. These results from DV-X$\alpha$ method were well coincided with the experimental result by XPS analysis and supported the feasibility of theoretical interpretation for the $LiMn_2O_4$ compound.

  • For the study of attenuation phenomena of the radioactive elements in solution, the adsorption experiment of thorium, uranium, barium and strontium on kaolinite, gibbsite, quartz, granite and shale as a function of time, pH and the surface area was conducted under the competition condition each other. There are two steps of adsorption kinetics. The first step is faster and completes in hours or a day, and the second step is slower eqiulibrium reaction. The adsorption rate which is considered to be related to CEC differs with adsorbent and decreases in the order of shale, kaolinite, granite, gibbsite and quartz. On the other hand, the adsorption rate for the same adsorbent differs with elements in the order of thorium, uranium, barium and strontium in decreasing rate. It is also affected by pH of the solution and the surface area of adsorbent. In conclusion, we didn't find any different between noncompetition condition and competition condition, and this means that we only have to consider the pH of ground water, the characteristics of the geological materials and the kinds of radioactive element in the case of selection of the places for the radioactive waste disposal.

  • The oyster shell adsorbents were prepared by steam activation method to evaluate their adsorption characteristics. Washed and pulverized waste oyster shells were prepared by steam activated process in converter at the temperature range of about $700{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ after carbonized at the range of $600{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$. The shell carbonized at $1000^{\circ}C$ showed the best performance among those of other temperature ranges. Also, comparison between gas and liquid phase adsorption was performed to verify adsorbent possibility of waste shell. In case of gas phase, the adsorbent showed lower performance than existing commercial adsorbents. On the other hand, the liquid phase, they showed similar adsorption performance to commercial adsorbents when benzene was used.

  • In this study, zirconium fumarate of metal-organic framework (MOF-801) was solvothermally synthesized at 130 ℃ and characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analyses and porosity measurements from N2 sorption isotherms at 77 K. The ability of MOF-801 to act as an adsorbent for the phosphate removal from aqueous solutions at 25 ℃ was investigated. The phosphate removal efficiency (PRE) obtained by 0.05 g/L adsorbent dose at an initial phosphate concentration of 60 ppm after 3 h was 72.47%, whereas at 5 and 20 ppm, the PRE was determined to be 100% and 89.88%, respectively, after 30 min for the same adsorbent dose. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and pore volume of the bare MOF-801 sample were 478.25 ㎡/g and 0.52 ㎤/g, respectively, whereas after phosphate adsorption (at an initial concentration of 60 ppm, 3 h), the BET surface area and pore volume were reduced to 331.66 ㎡/g and 0.39 ㎤/g, respectively. The experimental data of kinetic (measured at initial concentrations of 5, 20 and 60 ppm) and isotherm measurements followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and the Freundlich isotherm model, respectively. This study demonstrates that MOF-801 is a promising material for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions.

  • In order to remove the heavy metals from synthetic wastewater containing Pb, Cr, and Cd, the experiment was conducted with a variety of concentration and pH by using the washed and dried coffee grounds as adsorbent. Almost of the heavy metals were removed in thirty minutes and the removal efficiency was maximized to the 80 percents following the different pH conditions. Furthermore, in the case of Cr, the removal efficiency was declined with the increasing of pH. As a result of this study, coffee grounds is proved to be a very good adsorbent to remove the heavy metals.

  • High concentration of carbon dioxide at subway cabin is one of the serious environmental concerns because carbon dioxide causes drowsiness, headache, and nervelessness of passengers. Ministry of Environment set a guideline for indoor carbon dioxide levels in train or subway in 2007. In this study, a carbon dioxide removal system for subway cabin was developed and tested using a test subway cabin. Various types of modified zeolites were used as the adsorbent of carbon dioxide. The tested zeolites were applied to the subway cabin, and showed high potential to lower the indoor $CO_2$ level.
