  • Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a rare, inherited disorder that leads to progressive brain damage and failure of the adrenal glands. It is passed down from parents to their children as an X-linked genetic trait. Therefore, it affects primarily males especially under the age of 10. People with ALD have excessive accumulation of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) in their brain because they do not have the enzyme which break down these fatty acids. Special method for treatment of ALD is not available. Eating a diet low in VLCFAs and taking special oils, called Lorenzo's oil, can lower the blood levels of VLCFAs. But this oil cannot stop the destruction of nerve cell. This article presents a case report: Dental treatment of a 11-year-old male patient with ALD under general anesthesia. Careful management must be required during treatment procedure because of difficulty in cooperation, seizure disorders, gastroesophageal reflux, pulmonary aspiration and airway complications.

  • This study was designed to compare by the body composition in 4 groups of Sprague-Dawley rats during starvation previously fed with standard, high Carbohydrate, high protein or high fat diet. A) In different internal organs and skeletal muscles, the weights were differently reduced during starvation. Especially the weight reduction of liver was the highest level at $50{\sim}70%$, and adrenal glands did not change significantly. After death due to starvation, body weight decreased morethan 40% comparing to the initial body weight and epididmal fat pads disap peared completely. B) In rats starved to death, the changes of body composition (%) were following; lipid content was markedly reduced, while protein was similar to that of zero day starvation, ash increased slightly and water content increased. C) Five days starvation did not change body composition and body weight significantly. D) Effects of succeeding starvation after feeding 4 different diets were not significant, and it seemed that 4 different diets did not affect life span due to starvation.

  • This Study was conducted to assess the single dose toxicity of DA-125, a new anthracycline anti-cancer agent, in rats and mice. The Drug was administered once intravenously to both sexes of rats and mice. Then followed a 14-day period of observation. The $LD_{50}$ Values (95% confidence limit) were estimated to be 60.9 mg/kg (57.5~64.3 mg/kg) for male rats and 60.2 mg/kg (56.2~64.5 mg/kg) for female rats, and 85.8 mg/kg (81.0~90.9 mg/kg) for male mice and 84.5 mg/kg (78.2~91.9 mg/kg) for female mice. Both sexes of rats and mice given the drug revealed the clinical sign of decreased locomotor activity, emaciation, hair loss, red-dish brown urine, salivation, and watery diarrhea. In addition, body weight from the next day to the 7th day tended to be decreased slightly in rats and mice treated with DA-125. Death occurred from the next day after administration to the 12th day. Macroscopically, congestion of gastrointestinal organ, lung, and adrenal glands were found in both sexes on the dead rats and mice. Histopathological examination of dead rats manifested atrophy of spleen, hypoplasia of bone marrow, hypcplasia and necrosis of lymphocyte in thymus, atrophy of villi in small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum), hyperplasia of granular epithelium in small intestine, degeneration of germinal epithelium in testis, defer oration of tubular epithelium in kidney, and vacuolation and myolysis of myocardium in heart. Histopathological examination of dead mice revealed hypoplasia of spleen and mesenteric lymph node, local necrosis of liver, atrophy of villi in small intestine, hyperplasia of glandular epithelium in small and large intestine, degeneration of tubular in kidney, degeneration of germinal cells in testis, and slight vacuolar degeneration of myocardium in heart.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the effects of Gaeullijin-Tang(GIT) on the progression of the estradiol valerate(EV)-induced polycystic ovaries(PCO) in rats. Methods: PCO was induced by single intramuscular injection with estradiol valerate(EV)(4mg) in female rats. Normal group(n=8) were injected with sesame oil and orally administrated distilled water for sixty days. PCO control group (n=8) were injected with EV and orally administrated distilled water for sixty days. GIT treated group(n=8) were injected with EV and orally administrated GIT for same duration. At the end day of experiment, we measured weights of body, ovaries, adrenal glands, uterus and contents of serum androsternedione (ADD) and total estrogen. The histomorphometrical changes of ovaries were also evaluated. And we observed the NGF and CRF expression by immunohistochemistry. Results: The results were as follows - The weights(mg) of ovaries in GIT treated group($75.5{\pm}4.3$) were significantly increased(p<0.001) compared with PCO control group($54.3{\pm}4.5$). - The numbers of mature follicles in GIT treated group($5.3{\pm}1.2$) were significantly increased(p<0.05) compared with PCO control group($3.5{\pm}1.2$). - The numbers of corpora lutea in GIT treated group($1.8{\pm}1.3$) were significantly increased(p<0.05) compared with PCO control group($0.3{\pm}0.7$). Conclusion: From the above results, we concluded that Gaeullijin-Tang(GIT) contributes to stimulating normally ovulation by decreasesing ovarian NGF concentrations.

  • Objectives: The objective of this review was to summarize the primary role of three representative endocrine axes in aquatic vertebrates and discuss the effects on endocrine systems and their interactions in teleost fish after exposure to environmental contaminants. Methods: We summarized individual traits and mechanisms for hormonal and transcriptional interactions between the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonad (HPG), hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT), and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes in fish. We also provided a brief discussion on the effects of nonylphenol-induced toxicity on endocrine systems and their interactions in fish as a demonstration of holistic explanation. Results: Currently-available data showed that thyroid dysfunction is associated with reproductive toxicity due to changes in steroidogenic gene expressions and sex hormone levels as well as gonad glands in fish. As an example, we demonstrated that exposure to nonylphenol could induce estrogenicity in male fish by decreasing thyroid hormones, which contributes to increased aromatase expression. Although the mechanisms are complicated and involved in multiple ways, a number of studies have shown that sex steroids influence the HPT axis or the HPA axis in fish, indicating bi-directional crosstalk. Critically missing is information on the primary target or toxicity mechanisms of environmental contaminants among the three endocrine axes, so further studies are needed to explore those possibilities. Conclusions: This review highlights the interactions between the HPG, HPT, and HPA axes in fish in order to better understand how these endocrine systems could interact with each other in situations of exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals.

  • Non-islet cell tumor-induced hypoglycemia (NICTH) is associated with mesenchymal tumor types, including hemangiopericytoma, fibrosarcoma, mesothelioma, and neurofibroma, as well as carcinoma of the liver, adrenal glands, and kidneys. Non- islet cell tumors induce hypoglycemia by overproducing an abnormal form of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF m. Complete removal of the tumor or reduction of the tumor mass is a successful therapeutic strategy in cases of NICTH. However, if the tumor re-grows, curative resection is nearly impossible, and hypoglycemia occurs repeatedly. Glucocorticoids are effective in terms of long-term relief from hypoglycemia through promotion of gluconeogenesis in the liver, tumor suppression, production of 'big'-IGF-II, and correction of the attendant biochemical abnormalities involving the growth hormone (GH)-IGF axis. We found that administration of corticosteroid therapy to a patient suffering from NICTH resulted in improvement of hypoglycemia associated symptoms.

  • Acupuncture works by stimulating peripheral sensory nerves and their endings causing an increase in cutaneous blood flow and microcirculation, as well as release of neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and hormones. SP6 Patch is a nanoscale nontransdermal device that mildly stimulates Stomach 36 (zusanli) and other acupuncture points. As stimulation of these points has been indicated to have an effect on hypothalamic function, it is of great research interest to investigate the effect of SP6 Patch on the physiology of organs that are affected by hypothalamic regulation. Bioelectrical tissue impedance data indicative of cellular physiologic organ function, using an Electro Interstitial Scan (EIS) system, were acquired from hypothalamus, pancreas, liver, intestines, kidneys, thyroid and adrenal glands in 10 (1 male, 9 females) volunteers while wearing the SP6 Patch daily for 1 week. EIS testing was performed at baseline with no patch, 30 min after wearing the patch, and after wearing the patch 12 h/day for 1 week. Subjects were instructed to keep well hydrated during the study period. All subjects served as their own control. The hypothesis was: The SP6 Patch worn 12 h/day on the Stomach 36 acupuncture point for 1 week, may significantly improve cellular physiologic functional status of different organs measured by EIS. All tested organs achieved significant improvement in their functional physiologic status after wearing the SP6 Pach 12 h/day for 1 week compared to baseline with an overall average statistical power > 89%. Based upon these results the hypothesis was accepted as true.

  • Sprague-Dawley male rats (150 g) were chronically treated with 5 v/v % ethanol admixed with nutritionally complete liquid diet and fed ad libitum for 3 weeks. One half of each group was exposed to cold stress at 4 ^{\circ}C either for 24 h (for determination of mRNA by in situ hybridization) or for 48 h (for determination of enzyme activity). Chronic ethanol treatment (ethanol) did not affect tyrosine hydroxylase(TH) mRNA level in locus coeruleus(LC) of brain and adrenal medulla(AM) compared to controls. Cold stress showed strong increase of TH mRNA level in LC and AM compared to controls. Pretreated ethanol reduced the increased TH mRNA level by cold stress in LC and AM. Ethanol did not affect TH activity in LC and adenal glands(adrenals). Cold stress increased TH activity in LC but not in adrenals. Pretreated ethanol did not reduce the increased TH activity by cold stress in LC but this result was not shown in adrenals. Phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase(PNMT) activity in $C_{1}$$C_{2}$ and adrenals increased only in ethanol treated group. THese results suggest that ethanol does not affect TH mRNA level and activity in LC and adrenals, but increases PNMT activity in $C_{1}$$C_{2}$ and adrenals in normal rat. It is also suggested that pretreated ethanol reduces the magnitude of cold stress response, that is induction of TH mRNA in LC and AM, and does not reduce the protein activation of TH that is also cold stress response in LC.

  • Lung cancer is known to metastasize to a wide range of organs. The main sites for the metastatic foci are the mediastinal lymph nodes, brain, bones, adrenal glands, and the liver. Metastases to the paranasal sinuses are rare. However, a metastatic maxillary tumor may be the initial presentation of an unknown primary malignancy. Here, we report a case of a lung cancer that metastased to the maxillary sinus because of its rarity and its effect on the treatment of the disease.
