  • The present study was designed to examine the effect of total ginseng saponin on CA secretion evoked by activation of nicotinic receptors from the isolated perfused rat adrenal glands. Total ginseng saponin given (100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/20 min) into an adrenal vein did fail to produce alteration of spontaneous CA release from the rat adrenal medulla. Acetylcholine (5.32 mM)- and DMPP (100 uM, a selective ncotinic receptor agonist)-evoked CA secretory responses were reduced markedly by the pretreatment with the total ginseng saponin at a rate of 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/6.2 $m\ell$/20 min, respectively.

  • The effect of alteration of light-darkness cycle on the protein metabolism was studied in the rat. The light-darkness cycle was altered either every 3 or 9 days, and animals consumed diets containing 8 or 25% casein. The results were summarized as follows : 1) Food consumptions and body weight gains of the 25% casein groups were higher than those of the 8% casein groups, and, among the animals consumed 25% casein diet, the light-darkness cycle altered group had lower food consumption and body weight gain than the unaltered group. 2) Weights of liver and adrenal gland per l00g body weight were not different with the dietary protein levels, but, at the end of experimental period, the 8% casein diet group of which light-darkness cycle altered every 9 days had the smallest liver weight and the largest adrenal gland weight. 3) Liver nitrogen and plasma protein concentrations of the 25% casein groups were slightly higher than those of the 8% casein groups. 4) Percentages of nitrogen retention of the 25% casein groups at period III were slightly lower in the light-darknerr cycle altered animals than that of the unaltered group.

  • Fluorides were supposed to exert a stimulatory action on the catecholamine release. In this study, the authors attempted to investigate the action of sodium fluoride on the catecholamine release from the isolated perfused cow adrenal gland and rat heart. And also the inhibitory effect of sodium fluoride on the monoamine oxidase activity in rat heart and liver mitochondria was investigated. The monoamine oxidase activity was measured by the conversion of benzylamine to benzaldehyde. The results obtained were follows; 1. Sodium fluoride stimulated the release of catecholamine from the isolated perfused cow adrenal gland and rat heart. 2. Sodium fluoride inhibited the rat heart and liver mitochondrial monoamine oxidase activity.

  • Prenatally diagnosed neuroblastomas have been reported in increasing numbers over the past several years. The vast majority are in favorable stages of the disease (stage I, II, IV-S). The authors experienced one case of stage IV-S neuroblastoma of the adrenal gland with liver metastasis, which regressed spontaneously after removal by adrenalectomy. This patient was noticed to have an abdominal mass at prenatal ultrasonography performed at 36weeks of gestation. This tumor was a neuroblastoma of the left adrenal gland with multiple liver metastases. Left adrenalectomy and liver biopsy were performed at 3 months of age. Thirty-eight months after surgery, an MRI demonstrated that the hepatic metastatic lesions had completely regressed without chemotherapy or radiation.

  • The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of bradykinin on secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by stimulation of cholinergic receptors and membrane depolarization from the isolated perfused model of the rat adrenal glands, and to elucidate its mechanism of action. Bradykinin $(3{\times}10^{-8}M)$ alone produced a weak secretory response of the CA. however, the perfusion with bradykinin $(3{\times}10^{-8}M)$ into an adrenal vein of the rat adrenal gland for 90 min enhanced markedly the secretory responses of CA evoked by ACh $(5.32{\times}10^{-3}M)$, excess $K^+$ ($5.6{\times}10^{-2}M$, a membrane depolarizer), DMPP ($10^{-4}$ M, a selective neuronal nicotinic agonist) and McN-A-343 ($10^{-4}$ M, a selective M1-muscarinic agonist). Moreover, bradykinin ($3{\times}10^{-8}$ M) in to an adrenal vein for 90 min also augmented the CA release evoked by BAY-K-8644, an activator of the dihydropyridine L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels. However, in the presence of $(N-Methyl-D-Phe^7)$-bradykinin trifluoroacetate salt $(3{\times}10^{-8}M)$, an antagonist of $BK_2$-bradykinin receptor, bradykinin no longer enhanced the CA secretion evoked by Ach and high potassium whereas the pretreatment with Lys-$(des-Arg^9,\;Leu^9)$-bradykinin trifluoroacetate salt $(3{\times}10^{-8}M)$, an antagonist of $BK_1$-bradykinin receptor did fail to affect them. Furthermore, the perfusion with bradykinin $(3{\times}10^{-6}M)$ into an adrenal vein of the rabbit adrenal gland for 90 min enhanced markedly the secretory responses of CA evoked by excess $K^+$ $(5.6{\times}10^{-2}M)$. Collectively, these experimental results suggest that bradykinin enhances the CA secretion from the rat adrenal medulla evoked by cholinergic stimulation (both nicotininc and muscarinic receptors) and membrane depolarization through the activation of $B_2$-bradykinin receptors, not through $B_1$-bradykinin receptors. This facilitatory effect of bradykinin seems to be associated to the increased $Ca^{2+}$ influx through the activation of the dihydropyridine L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels.

  • The study was carried out to elucidate the effects of ovarian function on the thyroid gland, adrenal gland and uterus in female rats. One hundred and forty-four mature female rats were allotted into the three groups ; ovariectomized group, estradiol treated group and intact control group. The ovaries of 48 heads of rats were completely removed. Forty eight heads of rats were administered with $200{\mu}g$ of estradiol benzoate every 48 hours. Serum estradiol-$17{\beta}$ and progesterone levels were determined with radioimmunoassay method at 3, 6, 12, 24 hours and 5, 10, 15 days after treatment. The rats were necropsied to measure weights of thyroid gland, adrenal gland and uterus and to examine the histological changes in the organs. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. Serum estradiol-$17{\beta}$ levels were rapidly decreased below 27.20pg/ml 18 hours after ovariectomy. In estradiol treated rats the levels were rapidly increased 18 hours after treatment, but thereafter slowly decreased. The significant differences in the estradiol level were found between the group at every observation time. 2. Serum progesterone levels were significantly decreased after ovariectomy and estradiol injection. The lowest level was found in the group of ovariectomized rats. 3. The weights of thyroid glands decreased in ovariectomized rats rather than in intact rats 5 days after treatment. The weights tended to increase after estradiol injection but significant differences between the groups were seen on 10th and 15th days. 4. In the histological findings of thyroid glands, follicular epithelial cells were changed to be squamous 5 days after ovariectomy and accompanied pyknosis 10 days and karyorrhexis 15 days after ovariectomy. On the contrary follicular epithelial cells were changed to be columnar with hypertrophy 10 days after estradiol injection. 5. The significant differences in adrenal gland weights were recognized between all the groups 5 and 15 days after treatment in ovariectomized rats were lighter than intact rats and the adrenal gland weights were rather heavier in estradiol treated rats. 6. The days after ovariectomy the adrenal glands were atrophied accompanying with pyknosis in the cortical cells of zona fasciculata. The cells in zona fasciculata and zona reticularis started to hypertrophy 5 days after estradiol injection, but no changes were found in the zona glomerulosa of adrenal cortex and in the adrenal medulla. 7. The significant differences in uterus weights were recognized between the groups at each observation time. After ovariectomy the uterus weights decreased rapidly but after estradiol injection they increased rapidly. 8. Through histological examination of uterus, the atrophy and degeneration started to occur in endometrium and lamina propria 12 hours after ovariectomy, and in myometrium one day after ovariectomy, and the changes progressed rapidly after that. On the contrary, the myometrium was proliferated and hypertrophied from 12 hours after estradiol-$17{\beta}$ injection.

  • Unexplained hypotension during a stay in the ICU is not uncommon in patients who underwent major surgery such as open heart surgery. When the cardiac output of patients is low, the heart may be the origin of this problem. If the heart function is normal, then we have to consider adrenal insufficiency as a possible cause of this hypotension. Adrenal insufficiency is a rare condition in the general population, yet patients who are under a stressful condition might experience adrenal insufficiency more frequently. We report here on a case of a patient who was in an unstable postoperative state with adrenal insufficiency after surgery and the patient dramatically recovered after the replacement of hydrocortisone.

  • Metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be found in the multiple organs including adrenal gland. But adrenal metastasis of HCC without obvious hepatic lesion is very rare. We report CT and MR findings of a patient who presented with adrenal metastasis as the first clinical manifestation of HCC. Signal intensity and enhancement pattern of adrenal metastastic mass of HCC were similar to those of HCC on MRI.
