The purpose of this study was to examine the effect sizes of personal, family, peer, school, cyber environment, experience of bullying/victimization factors on cyberbullying perpetrating behavior among students in Korea using meta-analysis. Published academic journals and master/doctoral dissertations from 2010.01.01 to 2016.10.31 were identified using Research Information Sharing Service(RISS) data base. Keywords for search were cyberbullying, cyber-exclusion, cyber-violence, cyber-harassment, online/SNS peer harassment. A total of 43 studies were selected for meta-analysis. Personal factors and experience of bullying/victimization showed moderate effect sizes(0.28~0.29) and peer, family, cyber environment, school domains showed small effect sizes(0.08~0.13). Results of the study may be used to guide effective prevention or intervention strategies against cyberbullying among adolescents.
This paper provides a theoretical and conceptual framework for understanding adolescent culture and educational achievement in Korea. In the first part of the paper, the authors outline a research paradigm in cultural psychology and adolescent culture. In the second section, the traditional family structure, the role of parents, and how they have been changed by modernization are outlined. In the third section, socialization practices and parent-child relationship are reviewed. In the fourth section, Western theories that have been developed to explain educational achievement and their limitations are examined. In the fifth section, factors that contribute to educational success of Korean students are presented. In the final section, the impact of centralized, standardized, and rigid educational system that is imposed on adolescents is discussed. The highly regulated and centralized bureaucracy restricts educational and career opportunities for adolescents and it is responsible for the high rate of violence, delinquency, and bullying in Korea. The need for encouraging civil society that allows for diversity of ideas and skills and at the same time maintaining strong relational bonds are discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the statistical indicators of OECD and Korea for student health among Korea's approval statistics. Methods: Searching for health indicators by using Health at a Glance 2009, Society at a Glance 2009, and Education at a Glance 2009 through the formal OECD web site in 2010, and investigating the approval statistics through the Korean formal organizational web sites and published data in 2012. Results: Among OECD indicators, indicators for adolescent health were smoking and alcohol consumption, nutrition, physical activity, overweight and obesity, bullying, risk behaviors, and poverty children. However, most of Korea student health indicators were missing except poverty children and life satisfaction, because OECD has taken chiefly data from Health Behavior in School-aged Children survey (HBSC), international study, which has not been carried out in Korea. The Ministry Of Education, Science And Technology (MEST) and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and National Youth Policy Institute in Korea have produced the major statistics for student health which was only 11 (1.3%) among 858 approval statistics. Conclusion: Identifying a current Korea school health is essential through participating actively to OECD whose statistic indicators are internationally comparable with Students Physical Development Survey, MEST's approval statistics, using Korea Student Health Examination. It was also suggested that quantitative and qualitative expansions for Korea student health statistics by the activation of approval statistics including processed statistics, and by researchers' easy expanded access to a raw data.
Purpose: This study was to understand the life experiences of adolescents who were the object of group bullying. Method: Data collection and analysis was done by the Colaizzi method. Data were collected by interviewing the participants and by further follow-up observations. Ten adolescents participated in the study. At that time five of them had already overcome the situation, three were still in a difficult situation and the other two participants were in a temporary absence from school. Results: In the analysis 109 significant statements, 31 themes, 12 clusters of themes and 5 categories emerged. The 5 categories are as follows ; feeling inferiority, not being cared for, loneliness, suffering pain and building a relationship and resignation. The 12 clusters of themes are as follows ; dejection, not being sturdy, mal-function of the family, indifference of the society, loneliness, vexation, suffering, grievance, positive intervention of a support system, exertion, harmonizing and abandonment. Conclusions: The results of this study will help professionals to understand these adolescents. Approaching them from the point of view of the whole man, can also be a practical methode for teaching.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain insights into empathy, cyberbullying, and cybervictimization among Filipino adolescents. Methods: The participants were 168 junior high school students in the 7th to 10th grades at a public high school in Cavite Province, Philippines. Data were collected on demographic characteristics, the Basic Empathy Scale, and Revised Cyber Bullying Inventory-II scores. The data were analyzed in SPSS using descriptive statistics (frequency and mean), the independent t-test, bivariate correlation, and one-way analysis of variance. Results: The degree of empathy did not show a statistically significant relationship with cyberbullying (r=-.07, p=.359) but did show a significant relationship with cybervictimization (r=.18, p=.025). Furthermore, cyberbullying had a statistically significant association with cybervictimization (r=.60, p<.001). Conclusion: Although empathy does not necessarily affect cyberbullying, higher levels of empathy were found among cyberbullying victims. However, an alarming result of this study is the possibility that victims may become cyberbullies. Therefore, we should highlight empathy as part of efforts to prevent cyberbullying and to solve various cyber-related problems. Since cyberbullying and cybervictimization are closely related, it is important to focus on this relationship and to make multilateral efforts to ensure that cyberbullying does not lead to other negative issues.
Objectives: In South Korea (hereafter Korea), the number of adolescent offspring of immigrants has rapidly increased since the early 1990s, mainly due to international marriage. This research sought to examine the association between the experience of school violence and mental health outcomes, and the role of help-seeking behaviors in the association, among biethnic adolescents in Korea. Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data of 3627 biethnic adolescents in Korea from the 2012 National Survey of Multicultural Families. Based on the victim's help-seeking behavior, adolescents who experienced school violence were classified into three groups: 'seeking help' group; 'feeling nothing' group; 'not seeking help' group. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to examine the associations between the experience of school violence and depressive symptoms for males and females separately. Results: In the gender-stratified analysis, school violence was associated with depressive symptoms in the 'not seeking help' (odds ratio [OR], 7.05; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.76 to 13.23) and the 'seeking help' group (OR, 2.77; 95% CI, 1.73 to 4.44) among male adolescents after adjusting for potential confounders, including the nationality of the immigrant parent and Korean language fluency. Similar associations were observed in the female groups. However, in the 'feeling nothing' group, the association was only significant for males (OR, 8.34; 95% CI, 2.82 to 24.69), but not females (OR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.18 to 3.28). Conclusions: This study suggests that experience of school violence is associated with depressive symptoms and that the role of victims' help-seeking behaviors in the association may differ by gender among biethnic adolescents in Korea.
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship andinfluence of Focusing manner to deal with somatization symptoms of adolescents with experience of cyberbullying. For this study, we conducted on teenagers aged 14 to 19. A total of 366 of these results -84 men (23%) and 282 women(77%)- were used for the analysis. Data was analyzed through frequency analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. As a result, cyber-bullying experiences have a positive effect on somatizaion symptoms. Among the sub-factors of focusing manner, "knowledge" and "reviewing" have a negative effect on somatizaion symptoms, and "expression" has an negative effect on somatizaion symptoms. Based on the results of the study, the need for a therapeutic approach to focusing manner was presented when appealing for somatizaion symptoms of adolescents who experienced cyberbullying.
As social networking services (SNS) become widely used tools for maintaining social relationships, people use SNS to express themselves online. Users are free to form multiple characters in SNS because of online anonymity. This phenomenon causes SNS users to easily demonstrate multiple personas that are different from their identities in the real world. Therefore, this study focuses on online multi-personas that establish multiple fake identities in the SNS environment. The main objective of this study is to investigate factors that affect online multi-personas. Fake online identities can have various negative consequences such as cyber bullying, cyber vandalism, or antisocial behavior. Since the boundary between the online and offline worlds is fading fast, these negative aspects of online behavior may influence offline behaviors as well. This study focuses on teenagers who often create multi-personas online. According to previous studies, personal identities are usually established during a person's youth. Based on data on 664 teenage users, this study identifies four emotional factors, namely, closeness with others, relative deprivation, peer pressure and social norms. According to data analysis results, three factors (except closeness with others) have positive correlations with users' multi-personas. This study contributes to the literature by identifying the factors that cause young people to form online multi-personas, an issue that has not been fully discussed in previous studies. From a practical perspective, this study provides a basis for a safe online environment by explaining the reasons for creating fake SNS identities.
