In contrast to paints, the surface appearance of adhesive materials is of minor importance, because the adhesive is invisible between the two substrates. Therefore, the rheological properties needed to apply an adhesive dispersion by spray coating can be quite different. The influence of three different kinds of thickeners on the spraying behaviour of polyurethane adhesive dispersions was investigated. The associative thickener showed only minor changes, whereas the higher molecular weight soluble thickeners dramatically changed the spraying angle and the amount of overspray. Determination of the elongational viscosity by means of the CaBER rheometer proved to be of limited use for thickened dispersions.
Recently, ceramic materials have become a popular choice for dentists performing esthetic indirect restorations. The longevity and success of ceramic dental restorations depends on the adhesive procedures of resin cements. However, dental ceramics can be classified in various ways, depending on the compositions. Also, the applications for resin cement require multiple clinical steps. Therefore, understanding the different ceramic substrates involved in each procedure, as well as the proper adhesive steps for the resin cements is important to us for long-term clinical success.

This paper was designed to assess the adhesive properties of hard coatings on non-nitrided and nitrided various tool steels. Estimations of adhesion were done to scratch test which is mainly used in hard coating. The critical load$(L_c)$ between coating and substrate is defined through analysis of frictional load vs. normal load curve, signals of acoustic emission and optical observations. Coatings employed in this study are TiN, CrN and TiAlN, tools as substrates are STD11, STD61 and SKH51. It was classified to substrates with/without intermediate nitrided layer and hard coatings on substrate were deposited by arc PVD. Results showed that harder substrates and coatings give higher values of critical loads.

We generated single-crystal organic nanowire arrays using a direct printing method (liquidbridge- mediated nanotransfer molding) that enables the simultaneous synthesis, alignment and patterning of nanowires from molecular ink solutions. Using this method, single-crystal organic nanowires can easily be synthesized by self-assembly and crystallization of organic molecules within the nanoscale channels of molds, and these nanowires can then be directly transferred to specific positions on substrates to generate nanowire arrays by a direct printing process. The position of the nanowires on complex structures is easy to adjust, because the mold is movable on the substrates before the polar liquid layer, which acts as an adhesive lubricant, is dried. Repeated application of the direct printing process can be used to produce organic nanowire-integrated electronics with twoor three-dimensional complex structures on large-area flexible substrates. This efficient manufacturing method is used to fabricate all-organic nanowire field-effect transistors that are integrated into device arrays and inverters on flexible plastic substrates.
The first issue that should be overcome in copper process is its poor adhesive strength between pure copper film and glass substrate. In this study, defining the adhesive strength of pure copper film on various substrates and clarifying the key deposition parameters are presented for the investigation of copper process. First, using different kinds of surface plasma treatments were studied and the results showed that the adhesive strength was not improved even though the roughness of glass substrate surface was increased. Second, adding an adhesive layer between glass substrate and pure copper film was used to enhance the adhesion. Based on the data in the present paper, adopting copper alloy film as an adhesive layer can have capability preventing peeling problem in copper process. Besides, Cu/Cu alloy structure could be etched with the same etchant with better taper angle than the one with single layer of Cu. Unlike Cu/Mo structure, there is no residual problem for Cu/Cu alloy structure during etching process. Finally, this structure was examined in electrical test without significant difference in comparison with the conventional metal process.
In this study, we investigate the effects of corona-discharge pre-treatment on the properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which are used as flexible transparent electrodes. The CNTs are deposited on PET (polyethylene terephthalate) substrates using a spray coating method. Prior to the deposition of CNTs, the PET substrates are corona-treated by varying the feeding directions of the PET substrate and the numbers of treatments. The variations in the surface morphologies and roughnesses of the PET substrates due to corona-treatment are characterized via atomic force microscopy (AFM). Dynamic contact angles (DCAs) of the corona-treated PET substrates are measured and analyzed as functions of the treatment conditions. Also, the sheet resistances and visible-range transmittances of the CNTs deposited on PET substrates are measured before and after bending test. The experimental results obtained in this study provide strong evidences that the adhesive forces between CNTs and PET substrates can be substantially enhanced by corona-discharge pretreatment.

Method of plasma-immersion ion deposition of hydrogenated DLC films on relatively thick flat dielectric substrates from plasma of not-self-sustained low-pressure gas arc discharge is suggested. Coating properties have been investigated experimentally, average energy Per a deposited carbon atom depending on discharge current has been calculated. Optimum deposition parameters lot obtaining sufficiently hard and transparent high-adhesive a-C:H films on a 4-mm thick glass substrates have been determined. Possibility to use these coatings for photo-tools protection from abrasion wear at low operating loads is shown in general.

This paper was designed to assess the adhesive properties of hard coatings on non-nitrided and nitrided various tool steels. Estimations of adhesion were done to scratch test which is mainly used in hard coating. Objectives: Metalloproteinase-inhibiting agents, such as chitosan, can prevent collagen degradation in demineralized dental substrates, thereby improving the adhesive interface. This study evaluated the bond strength (BS) and chemical and morphological characterization of the adhesive interface after applying chitosan solution to demineralized dentin. Materials and Methods: The 80 third molars were selected. Forty teeth underwent caries induction using the pH cycling method. The teeth were divided according to the treatment: distilled water (control) and 2.5% chitosan solution. The surfaces were restored using adhesive and composite resins. Half of the specimens in each group were aged, and the other half underwent immediate analyses. The teeth were sectioned and underwent the microtensile bond strength test (µTBS), and chemical and morphological analyses using energy-dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Data analysis was performed using 3-way analysis of variance. Results: For µTBS, sound dentin was superior to demineralized dentin (p < 0.001), chitosan-treated specimens had higher bond strength than the untreated ones (p < 0.001), and those that underwent immediate analysis had higher values than the aged specimens (p = 0.019). No significant differences were observed in the chemical or morphological compositions. Conclusions: Chitosan treatment improved bond strength both immediately and after aging, even in demineralized dentin.
Adhesive bonding is currently widely used in many industrial fields, particularly in the aeronautics sector. Despite its advantages over mechanical joints such as riveting and welding, adhesive bonding is mostly used for secondary structures due to its low peel strength; especially if it is simultaneously exposed to temperature and humidity; and often presence of bonding defects. In fact, during joint preparation, several types of defects can be introduced into the adhesive layer such as air bubbles, cavities, or cracks, which induce stress concentrations potentially leading to premature failure. Indeed, the presence of defects in the adhesive joint has a significant effect on adhesive stresses, which emphasizes the need for a good surface treatment. The research in this field is aimed at minimizing the stresses in the adhesive joint at its free edges by geometric modifications of the ovelapping part and/or by changing the nature of the substrates. In this study, the finite element method is used to describe the mechanical behavior of bonded joints. Thus, a three-dimensional model is made to analyze the effect of defects in the adhesive joint at areas of high stress concentrations. The analysis consists of estimating the different stresses in an adhesive joint between two 2024-T3 aluminum plates. Two types of single lap joints(SLJ) were analyzed: a standard SLJ and another modified by removing 0.2 mm of material from the thickness of one plate along the overlap length, taking into account several factors such as the applied load, shape, size and position of the defect. The obtained results clearly show that the presence of a bonding defect significantly affects stresses in the adhesive joint, which become important if the joint is subjected to a higher applied load. On the other hand, the geometric modification made to the plate considerably reduces the various stresses in the adhesive joint even in the presence of a bonding defect.
