Blast cleaning has been applied in steel bridges for cleaning forged surface and increasing adhesive property of applied coating systems. Blasting is the operation of cleaning or preparing a surface by forcible propelling a stream of abrasive metals against it. Blast cleaning may improve surface geometry and induce compressive residual stress, and eventually may increase fatigue life of weld joints. In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out on three types of non-load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, as-welded joints, blast-treated joints, and stress-relieved joints after blasting, in order to investigate effect of blast cleaning on fatigue behavior of the weld joints. By Blast cleaning, the weld toe radius was increased by 29% and compressive residual stress was induced near weld toes. Blast cleaning increased fatigue life and fatigue endurance limit of the weld joints. When the applied stress ranges decreased, the increment in fatigue life became larger. About a 150% increase in fatigue limit could be realized by using blast cleaning.
The microstructure and bond strength are examined on the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints brazed by the Ag-Ti based alloys with different Ti contents. In the SiC/SiC brazed joints, the thickness of the reaction layers at the bond interface and the Ti particles in the brazing alloy matrices increase with Ti contents. When Ti is added up to 9 at% in the brazing alloy. $Ti_3SiC_2$ phase in addition to TiC and $Ti_5Si_3$ phase is newly created at the bond interface and TiAg phase is produced from peritectic reaction in the brazing alloy matrix. In the SiC/mild steel joints brazed with different Ti contents, the microstructure at the bond interface and in the brazing alloy matrix near SiC varies similarly to the case of SiC/SiC brazed joints. But, in the brazing alloy matrix near the mild steel, Fe-Ti intermetallic compounds are produced and increased with Ti contents. The bond strengths of the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazed joints are independent on Ti contents in the brazing alloy. There are no large differences of the bond strength between SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazed joints. In the SiC/mild steel brazed joints, Fe dissolved from the mild steel does not affect on the bond strength of the joints. Thermal contraction of the mild steel has nearly no effects on the bond strength due to the wide brazing gap of specimens used in the four-point bend test. The brazed joints has the average bond strength of about 200 MPa independently on Ti contents, Fe dissolution and joint type. Fracture in four-point bend test initiates at the interface between SiC and TiC reaction layer and propagates through SiC bulk. The adhesive strength between SiC and TiC reaction layer seems to mainly control the bond strength of the brazed joints.

Anatomy: The rotator cuff comprises four muscles-the subscapularis, the supraspinatus, the infraspinatus and the teres minor-and their musculotendinous attachments. The subscapularis muscle is innervated by the subscapular nerve and originates on the scapula. It inserts on the lesser tuberosity of the humerus. The supraspinatus and infraspinatus are both innervated by the suprascapular nerve, originate in the scapula and insert on the greater tuberosity. The teres minor is innervated by the axillary nerve, originates on the scapula and inserts on the greater tuberosity. The subacromial space lies underneath the acromion, the coracoid process, the acromioclavicular joint and the coracoacromial ligament. A bursa in the subacromial space provides lubrication for the rotator cuff. Etiology: The space between the undersurface of the acromion and the superior aspect of the humeral head is called the impingement interval. This space is normally narrow and is maximally narrow when the arm is abducted. Any condition that further narrows this space can cause impingement. Impingement can result from extrinsic compression or from loss of competency of the rotator cuff. Syndrome: Neer divided impingement syndrome into three stages. Stage I involves edema and/or hemorrhage. This stage generally occurs in patients less than 25 years of age and is frequently associated with an overuse injury. Generally, at this stage the syndrome is reversible. Stage II is more advanced and tends to occur in patients 25 to 40 years of age. The pathologic changes that are now evident show fibrosis as well as irreversible tendon changes. Stage III generally occurs in patients over 50 years of age and frequently involves a tendon rupture or tear. Stage III is largely a process of attrition and the culmination of fibrosis and tendinosis that have been present for many years. Treatment: In patients with stage I impingement, conservative treatment is often sufficient. Conservative treatment involves resting and stopping the offending activity. It may also involve prolonged physical therapy. Sport and job modifications may be beneficial. Nonsteroidal anti - inflammatory drugs(NSAIDS) and ice treatments can relieve pain. Ice packs applied for 20 minutes three times a day may help. A sling is never used, because adhesive capsulitis can result from immobilization.
Inner Structured and Bonded(ISB) panel, a kind of metallic sandwich panel, consists of two thin skin plates bonded to a micro-patterned inner structure. Its overall thickness is $1\~3mm$and it has attractive properties such as ultra-lightweight, high efficiency in stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratio. In many previous studies, resistance welding, brazing and adhesive bonding are studied for joining the panel. However these methods did not consider productivity, but focused on structural characteristics of joined panels, so that the joining process is very complicated and expensive. In this paper, a new joining process with resistance welding is developed. Curved surface electrodes are used to consider the productivity and the stopper is used between electrodes during welding time to maintain the shape of inner structure. Welding time, gap of electrodes and distance between welding points are selected as the process parameters. By measuring the tensile load with respect to the variation of welding time and gap of electrodes, proper welding conditions are studied. Welding time is proper between 1.5-2.5cycle. If welding time is too long, then inner structures are damaged by overheating. Gap of electrode should be shorter than threshold value fur joint strength, when total thickness of inner structure and skin plate is 3.3mm, the threshold distance is 3.0mm.
The present study aims to optimise the process parameters of fish glue and adhesion property through room temperature in terms of curing time and opened assembly time for attaining best adhesion strength to wood (Yellow birch, B. alleghaniensis). The uncured and cured fish glue have been characterised by TGA, DSC, FT-JR. It is observed that with increasing curing time up to 48 H, tensile lap shear strength of adhesive joint of fish glue to wood increases and decreases after 48 H. At 15 min. opened assembly time, lap shear strength increases up to 4833 kgf/cm2 and decreases after 15 min.

Background: This study aimed to analyze the efficacy of single-dose corticosteroid injection (CSI) administered at 6 weeks postoperative to treat stiffness following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR). Methods: In this prospective, multicentric, case-control study, post-ARCR stiffness at 6 weeks was treated with either a single dose of intra-articular CSI (CSI group) or physical therapy with oral analgesics (non-CSI group). Pain intensity according to visual analog scale (VAS), functional outcome using the Constant Murley Shoulder Score, time to return to activities of daily living (ADLs), and retear rate were recorded at 6 weeks, 9 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, 12 months, and 18 months postoperatively in both groups. Results: A total of 149 patients (54.5%) in the CSI group and 124 patients (45.5%) in the non-CSI group were included in this study. Pain and function were significantly better in the CSI group at 9-week, 12-week, and 6-month (P<0.001) follow-up, whereas they were not significantly different when the groups were compared at 12- and 18-month follow-up. The mean duration to return to ADLs was significantly shorter (P<0.001) in the CSI group. The incidence of retears was not significantly different (P=0.36) between groups at the end of 18 months of follow-up. Conclusions: Single-dose intra-articular CSI administered at 6 weeks postoperative to treat post-ARCR stiffness significantly improved pain, function, and duration of return to ADLs without increasing the risk of retears compared to patients who did not receive intra-articular CSI. Level of evidence: III.
To improve the grout penetration characteristics, a vibratory grout injection technique was adopted in this study. It is a technique of grout injection in which an oscillating pressure is added to the steady-state pressure as an injection pressure. By applying the vibration during grout injection, cement particles will become less adhesive and the clogging tendency will be decreased. A series of pilot-scale chamber tests were performed to verify the enhancement of the groutability by applying the vibratory grout injection; assessment on the change of the lumped parameter $\theta$ which represents a barometer of clogging phenomenon was made. Moreover, the effect of vibratory grout injection through the joint was also investigated using artificially made rock joints. Experimental results as well as analytical results show that the grout penetration depth can be substantially improved by vibratory grouting. Moreover, it was found that enhancement of the permeation grouting due to vibratory injection is more dominant at grouting pressure less than 400 kPa.

Strength and failure of adhesively bonded carbon composite-to-aluminum single-lap joints were studied by experiment. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of various parameters such as curing pressure for bonding, overlap lengths, and adherend thickness on the failure loads and modes of the bonded Joints with dissimilar materials. Experimental results show that the bonding pressure for composite-to-aluminum dissimilar materials should be 4 atm at the lowest. Failure load of the joints increases as the overlap length increases, but the strength (failure load divided by bonded area) decreases rapidly after the overlap width-to-length ratio is greater than 1. When the adherend thickness increase to double, bonding strength increase $12{\sim}55%$. Major failure mode of the joints is the delamination in the composite laminate and the location of delamination goes deeper into the laminates as the bonding pressure and overlap length increase.
Prediction of the load-bearing capacity of an adhesive-bonded Joint is of practical importance for engineers. This paper introduces interface fracture mechanics approach to predict the load-bearing capacity of composite metal bonded joints. The adhesion strength of composite/steel bonding is evaluated in terms of the energy release rate of an interfacial crack and the fracture toughness of the interface. Virtual track closure technique (VCCT) is used to calculate energy release rates, and hi-material end-notched flexure (ENF) specimens are devised to measure the interfacial fracture toughness. Bi-material ENF specimens gave consistent mode II fracture toughness $(G_{IIc})$ values of the composite/steel interface regardless of the thickness of specimens. The critical energy release rates of double-lap joints showed a good agreement with the measured fracture toughness. Therefore. the energy-based interfacial fracture characterization can be a practical engineering tool for predicting the load-bearing capacity of bonded joints.
Currently, Induction welding is attracting attention as a non-contact, clean and fast welding process. However, since thermoplastic resins are not affected by electromagnetic fields, induction welding requires a heating element called a susceptor. Researches are being conducted with the aim of achieving high-quality bonding, however, the factor of a heating element is an issue, hence the need to set a standard. Specimen fabrication and testing are conducted according to ASTM D5868. In this study, we propose that the evaluation criteria be judged on the basis of three factors; the condition of the welded joint surface, void content, and lap shear strength. Since the adhesive surface to be welded melts and solidifies as it cools, rapid temperature changes can generate pores. In addition, if the heating is not uniform, it is difficult to expect the desire performance. Using PA6 (CF 30%) thermoplastic, susceptor fabrication, induction welding and performance verification were conducted.
