Adhesive-bonded joints are widely used in the industry. Recently, applications of adhesive bonding joints have been increased extensively in automobile and aircraft industry. The strength of adhesive joints is influenced by the surface roughness, adhesive shape, stress distribution, and etc. However, the magnitude of the influence has not yet been clarified because of the complexity of the phenomena. In this study, as the fundamental research of adhesive bonding joints, the effects of adhesive shape and loading speed on bonding strength properties and durability of aluminum to polycarbonate single-lap joints were studied. To evaluate the effect of adhesive shape, several modified shapes were used, and loading speeds were varied from 0.05 to 5mm/min. As a result, the load distribution showed a brittle fracture tendency. The trigonal edged single lap and bevelled lap joints showed the higher strength than the plain single lap, trigonal single lap, joggle lap and double lap joints in same adhesive area. The fractures of trigonal single lap and trigonal edged single lap joints that had the higher strength level were shown as the mixture type of the cohesive and interfacial-failure, mostly joggle lap joints that had the lower strength level were shown as the adhesive-failure.
One of the important advantage of adhesive bonded joint can combine the different materials. The joint that bonded by structural adhesive bond must keep a large force and its strength is affected by some environmental factors such as temperature and submergence time in water. In order to advance the fatigue strength of adhesive bonded joint, mostly put a surface treatment on the surface. This study was researched the effect of air temperature, submergence time, submergence temperature and surface treatment on the fatigue strength. We found that submergence temperature has the most effect and low plasma treatment specimens have the most fatigue strength.
Recently, adhesive-bonding technique is wifely used in manufacturing structures. Stress and strain analysis of joints are essential to design adhesive-bonded joints structure. The single-lap adhesive joint is the design dominating the range of adhesive joints. In this study, single-lap specimens with different joint dimensions were used for the tensile-shear test and finite element calculation in of order to investigate the effect of overlap length and adhesive-bonding thickness on adhesive strength and stress distribution of the joints. Consequently, it was found that overlap lap size and thickness can be important parameters of structure joints using adhesive bonding, which is effected on adhesive strength.
In this paper dynamic behavior (modal analysis and dynamic transient response) of a novel sandwich T-joint is numerically and experimentally investigated. An epoxy adhesive is selected for bonding purpose and making the step wise graded behavior of adhesive region. The effect of the step graded behavior of the adhesive zone on dynamic behavior of a sandwich T-joint is numerically studied. Finite element analysis (FEA) of the T-joints with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) face-sheets is performed by ABAQUS 6.12-1 FEM code software. Modal analysis and dynamic half-sine transient response of the sandwich T-joint are presented in this paper. Two verification processes employed to verify the dynamic modeling of the manufactured sandwich panels and T-joint modeling. It has been shown that the step wise graded adhesive zone cases have changed the second natural frequency by about 5%. Also, it has been shown that the different arranges in the step wise graded adhesive zone significantly affect the maximum stresses due to transient dynamic loading by 1112% decrease in maximum peel stress and 691.9% decrease in maximum shear stress on the adhesive region.
The adhesively-bonded joints considered in this investigation include single-lap joint and double-lap joint. For an adhesively bonded double-lap joint, end mismatch between the two cuter adherends(upper, lower) can not removed completely although it can be controlled within a manufacturing tolerance. This paper shows that the end mismatch introduces local bending and end mismatch affects the shear and peel stresses in the adhesive. The double-lap joint with an end mismatch is affected of adhesive thickness, material properties of adhesive and adherend etc. Also, we concluded that there are critical value of an end mismatch to provoke the interface fracture.
NDT (Non Destructive Test) of the adhesive joints is very important because their strengths have greatly affected by the worker's skill and environmental condition. Recently, the electric impedance method in which 1-2 wt% CNT was dispersed in the adhesive and the electric resistance of the adhesive joint was measured was suggested for the defect detection of the adhesive joint. The uniform dispersion of CNT in the electric impedance method is very important to make a constant electric resistance of the adhesive joint and the accuracy of defect detection depends on the uniform dispersion. In this paper, the adhesive joints in which CNT was dispersed in the adhesive by the four dispersion methods were made and their electric resistance were measured. The pre-process and evaporation process of CNT using the ultrasonic method and agitation method was used and the effective dispersion method was suggested. Also, the criteria to evaluate the dispersivity was proposed.

Recently, use of adhesive bonding technology is increased to achieve the multi-material design for lightweight structure in automobile industry. In this paper, the fracture strength of adhesive has been studied with the single lap shear test conducted at different temperatures. The joint specimens are made from Al 5052 and SPRC 440 bonded with structural epoxy adhesive. The operating temperature has been considered up to $150[^{\circ}C]$ and the single lap shear test has been conducted with 5mm/min tensile rate. Fracture strength of adhesive bonded joint has been decreased with increase of operating temperature. The fracture strength at the $100[^{\circ}C]$ was shown about half of that at room temperature.

Because adhesively bonded joints are used in many structural systems, it is important to predict accurate adhesive strengths. Composite aircraft with many joints are easily exposed to low temperatures and high relative humidity. This paper presents a humidity aging effect on the adhesive strength of a composite single-lap joint (SLJ). The adhesive strength of the SLJ is predicted using a finite element analysis with a cohesive zone model (CZM) technique. The humidity aging effect is evaluated based on the adhesive strength and CZM parameters. A lap joint test is carried out on the composite SLJ specimens, which are exposed for four months of 100% R.H. at $25^{\circ}C$. The predicted strengths are in good agreement with experimental data, and the actual crack propagation is satisfactorily simulated using the local CZM technique.
The composite joint has become an important research area because the structural efficiency of a structure with a joint is determined by its joints rather than by its basic structure since the joints are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the strengths of adhesive joints consisting of metal and composites were predicted and tested by the maximum strain theory and damage zone theory. Nonlinear finite element analyses of adhesive Joints considering the material nonlinearity of the adhesive layer were performed. From the tests and analyses, the strengths of the adhesive joints could be predicted to within 22.2% using the damage zone ratio.

The objects of this research are to establish the criteria of peel occurrence considering the shape of bond terminus and to compare the strength properties of adhesive joint of different three type such as butt joint, T-shape, and single lap Joints. The criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus was suggested. Peel loads of three type adhesive joint (butt Joint, T-shape specimen, single lap joint) were determined from tensile tests. Principal stress distributions of these joints were determined from finite element method analysis. Then, peel occurrence was estimated with stress singularity factor$(K_{prin})$ when the terminus shape was square, with average principal stress when the terminus shape was rounded. The conclusions are summarized as follows; (1) In the non-filleted model(e.g., butt joint, T-shape specimen), principal stress shows singularity at the bond terminus, intensity of stress(principal stress) singularity $(K_{prin})$ can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus. (2) In the filleted model(e.g., single lap joint), principal stress has not affected singularity at the bond terminus. Average principal stress$(K_{av})$ can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus.
