Objectives: Extensively destroyed teeth are commonly restored with composite resin before cavity preparation for indirect restorations. The longevity of the restoration can be related to the proper bonding of the resin cement to the composite. This study aimed to evaluate the microshear bond strength of two self-adhesive resin cements to composite resin. Material and Methods: Composite discs were subject to one of six different surface pretreatments: none (control), 35% phosphoric acid etching for 30 seconds (PA), application of silane (silane), PA + silane, PA + adhesive, or PA + silane + adhesive (n = 6). A silicone mold containing a cylindrical orifice ($1mm^2$ diameter) was placed over the composite resin. RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE) or BisCem (Bisco Inc.) self-adhesive resin cement was inserted into the orifices and light-cured. Self-adhesive cement cylinders were submitted to shear loading. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Results: Independent of the cement used, the PA + Silane + Adhesive group showed higher microshear bond strength than those of the PA and PA + Silane groups. There was no difference among the other treatments. Unicem presented higher bond strength than BisCem for all experimental conditions. Conclusions: Pretreatments of the composite resin surface might have an effect on the bond strength of self-adhesive resin cements to this substrate.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of tri-antibiotic paste (TAP) on microtensile bond strengths (MTBS) of dental adhesives to dentin. Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted molars had their occlusal surfaces flattened to expose dentin. They were divided into two groups, i.e., control group with no dentin treatment and experimental group with dentin treatment with TAP. After 10 days, specimens were bonded using self-etch (Filtek P90 adhesive) or etch-and-rinse (Adper Single Bond Plus) adhesives and restored with composite resin. Teeth were sectioned into beams, and the specimens were subjected to MTBS test. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests. Results: There was a statistically significant interaction between dentin treatment and adhesive on MTBS to coronal dentin (p = 0.003). Despite a trend towards worse MTBS being noticed in the experimental groups, TAP application showed no significant effect on MTBS (p = 0.064). Conclusions: The etch-and-rinse adhesive Adper Single Bond Plus presented higher mean bond strengths than the self-etch adhesive Filtek P90, irrespective of the group. The superior bond performance for Adper Single Bond when compared to Filtek P90 adhesive was confirmed by a fewer number of adhesive failures. The influence of TAP in bond strength is insignificant.
Objectives: Metalloproteinase-inhibiting agents, such as chitosan, can prevent collagen degradation in demineralized dental substrates, thereby improving the adhesive interface. This study evaluated the bond strength (BS) and chemical and morphological characterization of the adhesive interface after applying chitosan solution to demineralized dentin. Materials and Methods: The 80 third molars were selected. Forty teeth underwent caries induction using the pH cycling method. The teeth were divided according to the treatment: distilled water (control) and 2.5% chitosan solution. The surfaces were restored using adhesive and composite resins. Half of the specimens in each group were aged, and the other half underwent immediate analyses. The teeth were sectioned and underwent the microtensile bond strength test (µTBS), and chemical and morphological analyses using energy-dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Data analysis was performed using 3-way analysis of variance. Results: For µTBS, sound dentin was superior to demineralized dentin (p < 0.001), chitosan-treated specimens had higher bond strength than the untreated ones (p < 0.001), and those that underwent immediate analysis had higher values than the aged specimens (p = 0.019). No significant differences were observed in the chemical or morphological compositions. Conclusions: Chitosan treatment improved bond strength both immediately and after aging, even in demineralized dentin.
PURPOSE. The effects of four different self-adhesive resin cement materials on cell viability and apoptosis after direct and indirect exposure were evaluated using different cell culture techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Self-adhesive cements were applied to NIH/3T3 mouse fibroblasts by the extract test method, cell culture inserts, and dentin barrier test method. After exposure periods of 24 h and 72 h, the cytotoxicity of these self-adhesive materials was evaluated using the MTT assay (viability) and the Annexin-V-FITC/PI staining (apoptosis). RESULTS. The lowest cell viability was found in cells exposed to BeautiCem SA for 24 h in the extract test method. Cell viability was reduced to 70.6% compared to negative controls. After the 72 h exposure period, viability rate of cell cultures exposed to BeautiCem SA decreased more than 2- fold (29.5%) while cells exposed to RelyX U200 showed the highest viability rate of 71.4%. In the dentin barrier test method, BeautiCem SA induced the highest number of cells in apoptosis after a 24 h exposure (4.1%). Panavia SA Cement Plus was the material that caused the lowest number of cells in apoptosis (1.5%). CONCLUSION. The used self-adhesive cements have showed different cytotoxic effects based on the evaluation method. As exposure time increased, the materials showed more cytotoxic and apoptotic effects. BeautiCem SA caused significantly more severe cytotoxic and apoptotic effects than other cements tested. Moreover, cements other than BeautiCem SA have caused necrotic cell death rather than apoptotic cell death.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-etching on the bond strength of silorane-based composite specific adhesive system to dentin. Materials and Methods: Thirty human molars were randomly divided into 5 groups according to the different bonding strategies. For teeth restored with silorane-based composite (Filtek Silorane, 3M ESPE), the specific self-etching adhesive system (Adhesive System P90, 3M ESPE) was used with and without pre-etching (Pre-etching/Silorane and Silorane groups). Teeth restored with methacrylate based-composite (Filtek Z250, 3M ESPE) were hybridized with the two-step self-etching system (Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray), with and without pre-etching (Pre-etching/Methacrylate and Methacrylate groups), or three-step adhesive system (Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, 3M ESPE) (Three-step/Methacrylate group) (n = 6). The restored teeth were sectioned into stick-shaped test specimens ($1.0{\times}1.0mm$), and coupled to a universal test machine (0.5 mm/min) to perform microtensile testing. Results: Pre-etching/Methacrylate group presented the highest bond strength values, with significant difference from Silorane and Three-step/Methacrylate groups (p < 0.05). However, it was not significantly different from Pre-etching/Silorane and Methacrylate groups. Conclusions: Pre-etching increased bond strength of silorane-based composite specific adhesive system to dentin.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of multiple adhesive coatings on the thickness of hybrid and adhesive layer and shear bond strength(SBS) of self-etch adhesives and self-etch primer adhesives. The buccal or lingual crown dentin of extracted human molars was used. Self-etch adhesives or self-etch primer adhesives were applied 1, 2 and 3 times on the dentin before light curing. In another group adhesives were reapplied after light curing first layer. Treated surfaces were prepared to measure the thickness of hybrid and adhesive layer with SEM, and shear bond strength to dentin using an Instron machine. The following results were obtained : 1. The adhesive layers increased with the number of coatings(p<0.05) with all adhesives. Adpor Prompt L-Pop and Xeno III were significantly thinner than self-etch primer adhesives (p<0.05). 2. The thickness of hybrid layers increased with the number of coatings (p<0.05). 3. The shear bonding strength of Unifil Bond and Clearfill SE Bond were higher than Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus and Adpor Prompt L-Pop (p<0.05), and similar with Xeno III. 4. The shear bond strength increased significantly with the number of coatings in Adpor Prompt L-Pop(p<0.05), but decreased at 3 times in AdheSE Bond(p>0.05). 5. In Adpor Prompt L-Pop and Xeno III, the shear bond strength decreased when adhesives were reapplied after curing the first adhesive layer.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the shear bond strength of resin cement for orthodontic brackets without applying an adhesive primer, to the case of applying an adhesive primer. Materials and Methods: The specimens were divided into three experimental groups, Transbond XT, GC Ortho Connect and Orthomite LC, and the enamel surface was divided into two sections, one with 37% phosphoric acid and the other with 37% phosphoric acid and an adhesive primer or universal adhesive. Each of three types of cement was applied to orthodontic bracket, and after bonding, the shear bond strength was measured. Results: Transbond XT and Orthomite LC significantly increased shear bond strength when orthodontic brackets were bonded after applying an adhesive primer and universal adhesive, respectively. Conclusion: It is expected that application of an adhesive primer or universal adhesive after acid etching will improve shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets in Transbond XT and Orthomite LC.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to achieve more retention and stability and to delay or prevent screw loosening. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty implants (Implantium 3.4 mm, Dentium, Seoul, Korea) were divided into 2 groups (n = 20). In the first group, an adhesive material was applied around the screw of the abutments (test group). In the second group, the screws are soaked in saliva (control group). All the screws were torqued under 30 N/cm, Then, the samples were gone through a cyclic fatigue loading process. After cyclic loading, we detorqued screws and calculated detorque value. RESULTS. In comparison with the control group, all the implant screws in the test group were smeared with the adhesive material, showing significant higher detorque value. CONCLUSION. There are significantly higher detorque values in the group with adhesive. It is recommended to make biocompatible adhesive to reduce screw loosening.
The purpose of this vitro study was to evaluate the activity of human pulpal cells to adhesive glycoprotein-coated and non-coated culture dishes. Well known adhesive glycoproteins were used, such as type I collagen, type IV collagen, fibronectin, laminin, and vitronectin. Each adhesive glycoproteins applied onto the culture dishes. In this study, the protein coated and non-coated dishes were classified as each groups. Human pulpal cells cultured onto each groups. After 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours incubation time, radioactivity with scintillation counter for evaluation of the activity of human pulpal cells. The results as follows : 1. After 24 hours incubation time, activity of human pulpal cells were best in laminin-coated group among groups. Then fibronectin, type I collagen group were better, and all proteins were better than control. 2. After 48 hours incubation time, activity of human pulpal cells were best in fibronectin coated group. 3. After 72 hours incubation time, activity of human pulpal cells were not significantly different in all of adhesive glycoproteins. 4. After 24 hours incubation time, activity of human pulpal cells were best in fibronectin and laminin coated group. Activity of human pulpal cells in type I collagen coated group were better after 24 hours incubation time then 48 hours incubation time.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the application method of universal adhesives on the shear bond strength (SBS) of repaired composites, applied with different thicknesses. Materials and Methods: The 84 specimens (Filtek Z350 XT) were prepared, stored in distilled water for a week and thermocycled (5,000 cycles, 5℃ to 55℃). They were roughened using 400-grit sandpapers and etched with phosphoric acid. Then, specimens were equally divided into 2 groups; Single Bond Universal (SU) and Prime&Bond Universal (PB). Each group was subdivided into 3 subgroups according to application methods (n = 14); UC: 1 coat + uncuring, 1C: 1 coat + curing, 3C: 3 coats + curing. After storage of the repaired composite for 24 hours, specimens were subjected to the SBS test and the data were statistically analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance and independent t-tests. Specimens were examined with a stereomicroscope to analyze fracture mode and a scanning electron microscope to observe the interface. Results: Adhesive material was a significant factor (p = 0.001). Bond strengths with SU were higher than PB. The highest strength was obtained from the 1C group with SU. Bonding in multiple layers increased adhesive thicknesses, but there was no significant difference in SBS values (p = 0.255). Failure mode was predominantly cohesive in old composites. Conclusions: The application of an adequate bonding system plays an important role in repairing composite resin. SU showed higher SBS than PB and the additional layers increased the adhesive thickness without affecting SBS.
