The mechanical properties of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites (CFRPs) are greatly dependent on the interfacial adhesion between the carbon fibers and the epoxy matrix. Introducing nanomaterial reinforcements into the interface is an effective approach to enhance the interfacial adhesion of CFRPs. The main purpose of this work was to introduce graphitic nanofiber (GNFs) between an epoxy matrix and carbon fibers to enhance interfacial properties. The composites were reinforced with various concentrations of GNFs. For all of the fabricated composites, the optimum GNF content was found to be 0.6 wt%, which enhanced the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and fracture toughness (KIC) by 101.9% and 33.2%, respectively, compared with those of neat composites. In particular, we observed a direct linear relationship between ILSS and KIC through surface free energy. The related reinforcing mechanisms were also analyzed and the enhancements in mechanical properties are mainly attributed to the interfacial interlocking effect. Such an effort could accelerate the conversion of composites into high performance materials and provide fundamental understanding toward realizing the theoretical limits of interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties.

Ice adhesion or cohesion leads to the decrease of the performance of ice making system, especially to dynamic type ice thermal storage system (DISS) which mainly forms ice from the flow of an aqueous solution. The ice adhesion is influenced by various parameters associated with operating or geometric condition. In this study, the influence on an adhesion of ice to the characteristic of cooling surface and to composition of an aqueous solution was fundamentally observed by using batch type cooling device,. a beaker. Three patterns of solution in each beaker were cooled with brine. Moreover, the characteristic of cooling surface on each beaker was distinguished to coating materials. Stirring power as a degree of the ice adhesion was measured. The stirring power to cooling heat transfer rate in each beaker was compared. As a result, the lowest stirring power of 8.9 W with non-adhesion of ice, was shown in the case of the aqueous solution of EG(4) + PG(1.5) + 1,6HD(1.5). in PE coating beaker.
Statement of problem. The effects of surface roughness have not or insufficiently been analyzed on earlier events such as cell adhesion though cell behavior most germane to implant performance is cell adhesion. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate cell adhesion of osteoblast-like cells (MG63) onto three types of titanium disks with varying roughness using the Elisa assay. Materials and methods. Representative disks from each group (SLA, HA, machined) were subjected to surface analysis and surface roughness was measured by the optical interferometer (Accura 2000, Intekplus Co., Seoul, Korea). Following this, MG63 cells were cultured on the titanium disks and released. Cell adhesion measurements using the Elisa assay were performed specifically at three points: after 24, 48, and 72 hours of culture. Results. Among the 3 types of surface analyzed, the SLA surface was the roughest with a Ra value of $1.114{\mu}m$ followed by HA coated surface and machined surface, consecutively. The optical density values for the SLA surface group was significantly higher than that of the machined and HA coated surface groups following 24 and 48 hours of culture. The cell culture on HA coated surface showed significantly higher values compared to the machined surface following 24, 48 and 72 hours of culture. Conclusion. The results suggest that surface treatment of titanium surfaces enhanced cell adhesion of human osteoblast-like cells (MG63).

To apply the CVD diamond film to coated tools, it is necessary to make adhesion strength between diamond film and substrate stronger. So adhesion strength of diamond coated WC-Co tools using Microwave Plasma CVD and cutting test of Al-18mass%Si alloy using diamond cutting tools were studied. Diamond coating was carried out using Microwave Plasma CVD apparatus. Reaction gas was used mixture of methane and hydrogen. Substrate temperature were varied from 673K to 1173K by control of microwave output power and reaction pressure. By observation of SEM, grain size became larger and larger as substrate temperature became higher and higher. Also all deposits were covered with clear diamond crystals. XRD results, the deposits were identified to cubic diamond. An analysis using Raman spectroscopy, the deposit synthesized at lower substrate temperature (673K) showed higher quality than deposit synthesized at higher substrate temperature (1173K). As a result of scratch adhesion strength test, from 873K to 1173K adhesion strength decreased by rising of substrate temperature. The deposit synthesized at 873K showed best adhesion strength. In the cutting test of Al-18mass%Si alloy using diamond coated tools and the surface machinability of Al-Si works turned with diamond coating tools which synthesized at 873K presented uniform roughness. Cutting performance of Al-18mass%Si alloys using diamond coated WC-Co tools related to the adhesion strength.

In this paper, the effect of adhesion properties of semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber on electrical properties was investigated. Surface structure and adhesion of semiconductive silicon rubber by surface asperity was obtained from SEM and T-peel test. In addition, ac breakdown test was carried out for elucidating the change of electrical property by roughness treatment. From the results, Adhesive strength of semiconductive-insulation interface was increased with surface asperity. Dielectric breakdown strength by surface asperity decreased than initial Specimen, but increased from Sand Paper #1200. According to the adhesional strength data unevenness and void formed on the silicone rubber interface expand the surface area and result in improvement of adhesion. Before treatment Sand Paper #1200, dielectric breakdown strength was decreased by unevenness and void which are causing to have electric field mitigation small. After the treatment, the effect of adhesion increased dielectric breakdown strength. It is found that ac dielectric breakdown strength was increased with improving the adhesion between the semiconductive and insulating interface.

Various technical approaches and concepts have been proposed to develop conductive super-hydrophobic (SH) surfaces. However, most of these approaches are not usable in practical applications because of insufficient adhesion and cost issues. Additionally, durability and uniformity issues are still in need of improvement. The goal of this research is to produce a large-area conductive SH surface with improved adhesion performance and uniformity. To this end, carbon nanotubes (CNT) with a high aspect ratio and elastomeric polymer were utilized as a conductive filler and matrix, respectively, to form a coating layer. Additionally, nanoscale silica particles were utilized for stable implementation of the conductive SH surface. To improve the adhesion properties between the SH coating layer and substrate, pretreatment of the substrate was conducted by utilizing both wet and dry etching processes to create specific organic functional groups on the substrate. Following pretreatment of the surface, a zirco-aluminate coupling agent was utilized to enhance adhesion properties between the substrate and the SH coating layer. Raman spectroscopy revealed that adhesion was greatly improved by the formation of a chemical bond between the substrate and the SH coating layer at an optimal coupling agent concentration. The developed conductive SH coating attained a high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness, which is advantageous in self-cleaning EMI shielding applications.
Cracking is an inevitable fact of asphalt concrete pavements and plays a major role in pavement deterioration. Pavement cracking is one of the main factors determining the frequency and method of repair. Cracks can be treated with a number of preventative maintenance actions, including overlay surface treatments such as slurry sealing, crack sealing, or crack filling. Pavement cracks can show up as one or all of the following types: transverse, longitudinal, fatigue, block, reflective, edge, and slippage. Crack sealing is a frequently used pavement maintenance treatment because it significantly extends the pavement service life. However, crack sealant often fails prematurely due to a loss of adhesion. Because current test methods are mostly empirical and only provide a qualitative measure of the bond strength, they cannot accurately predict the adhesive failure of the sealant. This study introduces a laboratory test aimed at assessing the bonding of hot-poured crack sealant to the walls of pavement cracks. A pneumatic adhesion tensile testing instrument (PATTI) was adopted to measure the bonding strength of the hot-poured crack sealant as a function of the curing time and temperature. Based on a limited number of test results, the hot-poured crack sealants have very different bonding performances. Therefore, this test method can be proposed as part of a newly developed performance-based standard specification for hot-poured crack sealants for use in the future. PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to evaluate both the adhesion and failure performance of a crack sealant as a function of its curing time and curing temperature. METHODS: A pneumatic adhesion tensile testing instrument (PATTI) was adopted to measure the adhesion performance of a crack sealant as a function of the curing time and curing temperature. RESULTS: With changes in the curing time, curing temperature, and sealant type, the bond strengths were found to be significantly different. Also, higher bond strengths were measured at lower temperatures. Different sealant types produced completely different bond strengths and failure behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: The bonding strength of an evaluated crack sealant was shown to differ depending on various factors. Two sealant types, which were composed of different raw materials, were shown to perform differently. The newly proposed test offers the possibility of evaluating and differentiating between different crack sealants. Based on alimited number of test results, this test method can be proposed as part of a newly developed performance-based standard specification for crack sealants or as part of a guideline for the selection of hot-poured crack sealant in the future.
Anti-adhesion coatings are very important in the processing of adhesive materials such as optical clear adhesive (OCA) films. Choosing the appropriate release coating material for dies and tools can be quite challenging. Hydrophobic surface treatment is usually performed, and its performance is often estimated by the static water contact angle (CA). However, the relationship between the release performance and the CA is not well understood. In this study, the water CAs of surfaces coated with anti-adhesion materials and the peel strengths of the acrylic-based adhesive films are evaluated. STC5 and SUS304 are selected as the base materials. Base materials with different surface roughnesses are produced by hairline finishing, mirror-polishing, and end milling. Four fluoropolymer compounds, including a self-assembled monolayer, are selected to make the base surface hydrophobic. Static, advancing, and receding CAs are mostly increased due to the coating, but the CA hysteresis is found to increase or decrease depending on the coating material. The peel strengths all decreased after coating and are largely dependent on the coating material, with significantly lower values observed for fluorosilane and perfluoropolyether silane coatings. The peel strength is observed to correlate better with the static CA and advancing CA than with the receding CA or hysteresis. However, it is not possible to accurately predict the anti-adhesion performance based on water CA alone, as the peel strengths are not fully proportional to the CAs.

Most of the materials used in various industrial fields and also in our daily life are multi-component materials or composite materials, and it is well known that there are many cases where adhesion between the constituents within the bonded systems plays an important role. There are various types of performance evaluation tests for the bonded materials, among which tests for evaluating the bond performance under various conditions may be regarded as the most interesting ones for those engaged in work related to adhesion. I have studied on the mechanism of adhesion form the rheological standpoint with my colleagues, including some students from Korea, and I am very happy to be able to have a talk on some of our research works. In Japan, the so-called "adhesives" are usually classified into two categories;adhesives and pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA). Adhesives are the materials which solidify after bonding and are after used as the structural adhesives because the adhesive strength is comparatively strong. On the other hand, the pressure sensitive adhesives never solidify and are used as PSA tapes, labels or decals. About the adhesives, we have examined the dependence of adhesive strength(shear, tensile, peel) upon both temperature and rate of deformation, and found out some empirical rules which are applicable to most of the adhesive systems. We have also developed a simplified theory of adhesion, which is deseribed in terms of mechanical equivalent mode1 and a few failure criteria. Although some of the common rules can be accounted for according to this theory, it must be pointed out that a fracture mechanical approach ms inevitable especially in the region where the meehanical relaxation time of the adhesive is extremely large [W. W. Lim and H. Mizumachi]. About the pressure sensitive adhesives, we have studied on the PSA performance (peel, tack, holding power) as a function of both the viscoelastic properties and surface chemical properties of the materials, and found out some rules, and again we have developed a theory which deseribes the mechanism. And in addition, we have studied on the miscibility between linear polymers and oligomers, because PSA is generally manufactured by blending gums and tackifier resins. Many phase diagrams have been found and some of them have been analyzed on thermodynamic basis, and it became evident that the miscibility is a very important factor in PSA [H. J. Kin and H. Mizumachi]. In this presentation, I want to emphasize the fact that the adhesion performance is closely related to the structure/property of the adhesives.adhesives.

Pull-off test is widely used to evaluate bond performance between concrete and FRP composite. However, reliability of experiment result declines due to many difference between test methods of each national standards. This study analyzed problems of various existing test methods for pull-off test and suggested standardized test method. In addition, since tensile strength of concrete is smaller than bond strength of epoxy resin, maximum bond strength of epoxy resin shall be limited within tensile strength of concrete. Alternative testing method, therefore, which decrease FRP adhesion areas than concrete adhesion areas is suggested to widen test range of bond strength in pull-off test. In the experimental results, bond performance can be estimated up to two times of tensile strength of concrete by reducing FRP adhesion areas by 1/3.
