  • In MPEG-4 video, Motion Adaptive Intra Refresh (MAIR) encodes a motion area macroblock in intra mode, thereby preventing the error propagation. Motion area is selected by difference of between current macroblock and previous macroblock. An effective implementation of the AIR is to reduce the maximum refresh time and estimate the error prone macroblock. However in the case or the MAIR, unnecessary macroblock can be encoded in intra mode. in this paper, a bitrate AIR is proposed that reduces the maximum refresh time by estimating the error prone macroblock more efficiently.

  • The packet loss and the disconnection during handoff are the most critical problems which degrade the video quality in wireless video streaming. To cope with these problems, we propose an efficient video streaming method in this paper, which does not only dynamically adjust the video transmission rate based on the raptor forward error correction (FEC) level, but also minimize the error propagation during handoff. Firstly, the channel bandwidth of the wireless broadband internet, called WiBro, is estimated by analyzing channel parameters including the carrier to interference and noise ratio (CINR) and the handoff. Secondly, the streaming server adjusts the next transmission rate according to the estimated channel bandwidth and the raptor FEC level to avoid packet error. Also, the encoder performs the intra refresh method that inserts an intra frame (I-frame) right after handoff to reduce the error propagation effectively. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can improve the performance of the video streaming over WiBro network.

  • The proposed RPSS(Reference Picture Segment Selection) mode is the RPS mode in picture segment of the ISD mode. The RPS mode has the weakness that it has to change the whole reference picture even if transmission error occurs only in the small part of picture. If the RPS mode is applied only to an error-occurred part and a conventional coding scheme is applied to an error-free part, the higher coding efficiency can be obtained. Simulation results show that there is the optimal number of segment which provides that best performance with given environment such as the BER(Bit Error Rate) of wireless channels, the characteristics of imput sequence, what kind of RPSS mode is used, etc. To apply the channel-adoptive RPSS mode later, the scheme which can change the number of segment without INTRA refresh and spatial error propagation is proposed in this paper.
