In this paper, we present a trellis-based blind channel estimation and equalization technique coupling two kinds of adaptive Viterbi algorithms. First, the initial blind channel estimation is accomplished by incorporating the list parallel Viterbi algorithm with the least mean square (LMS) updating approach. In this operation, multiple trellis mappings are preserved simultaneously and ranked in terms of path metrics. Equivalently, multiple channel estimates are maintained and updated once a single symbol is received. Second, the best channel estimate from the above operation will be adopted to set up the whole trellis. The conventional adaptive Viterbi algorithm is then applied to detect the signal and further update the channel estimate alternately. A small delay is introduced for the symbol detection and the decision feedback to smooth the noise impact. An automatic switch between the above two operations is also proposed by exploiting the evolution of path metrics and the linear constraint inherent in the trellis mapping. Simulation has shown an overall excellent performance of the proposed scheme in terms of mean square error (MSE) for channel estimation, robustness to the initial channel guess, computational complexity, and channel equalization.

In mobile communication systems, the Reduced State Sequence Estimation(RSSE) receiver must be able to track changes in the channel. This is carried out by the adaptive channel estimator. However, when the tentative decisions are used in the channel estimator, incorrect decisions can cause error propagation. This paper presents a new channel estimator using the path history in the Viterbi decoder for preventing error propagation. The selection of the path history in the Viterbi decoder for preventing error propagation. The selection of the path history for the channel estimator depends on the path metric as in the decoding of the Viterbi decoder in RSSE. And a discussion on the channel estimator with different adaptation algorithms such as Least Mean Square(LMS) algorithm and Recursive Least Square(RLS) algorithm is provided. Results from computer simulations show that the RSSE receivers using the proposed channel estimator have better performance than the other conventional RSSE receiver, and that the channel estimator with RLS algorithm is adequate for multipath fading channel.

In this paper, we present an implementation and it's real-sea test of an underwater acoustic data communication system, which allows the system to reduce complexity and increase robustness in time variant underwater environments. For easy adaptation to complicated and time-varying environments of the ocean, all-digital transmitter and receiver systems were implemented. For frame synchronization the CAZAC sequence was used, and QPSK modulation/ demodulation method with carrier frequency of 25kHz and a bandwidth of 5kHz were applied to generate 10kbps transmission rate including overhead. To improve transmission quality, we used several techniques and algorithms such as adaptive beamforming, adaptive equalizer, and convolution coding/Viterbi decoding. for the verification of the system performance, measurement of BER has been done in a very shallow water with depth of 8m at JangMok, Geoje. During the experiment, image data were successfully transmitted up to about 7.4km.

Wireless communication systems are inevitable for efficient underwater activities. Because of the poor propagation characteristics of light and electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves are generally used for the underwater wireless communication. Although there are many kinds of information type, visual images take an essential role especially for search and identification activities. For this reason, we developed an acoustic-based underwater image transmission system under a dual use technology project supported by MOCIE (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy). For the application to complicated and time-varying underwater environments all-digital transmitter and receiver systems are investigated. Array acoustic transducers are used at the receiver, which have the center frequency of 32kHz and the bandwidth of 4kHz. To improve transmission speed and quality, various algorithms and systems are used. The system design techniques will be discussed in detail including image compression/ decompression system, adaptive beam- forming, fast RLS adaptive equalizer, ${\partial}/4$ QPSK (Quadrilateral Phase Shift Keying) modulator/demodulator, and convolution coding/ Viterbi. Decoding.

The equalizer is the central part of the receiver and its performance significantly affects the overall performance of the system in the mobile communication. A proposed equalizer is composed of the channel estimator, MLSE based on the Viterbi algorithm and GMSK decoder. The approximation of GMSK with QPSK has great impact on the equalizer design, because it allows us to use the existing simple and efficient algorithms for designing optimal QPSK equalizer. In order to estimate efficiently channel, we use a sliding window algorithm based on energy calculation and cross-correlator. And also a tuning scheme is presented in order to improve the equalizer performance. Simulation results indicate that a proposed equalizer meets the GSM standards easily in terms of performance.
When an optical disc is being played. the pick-up converts light to analog signal at first. The analog signal is equalized for removing the inter-symbol interference and then the equalized analog signal is converted into the digital signal for extracting the synchronized data and clock signals. There are a lot of algorithms that minimize the BER in extracting the synchronized data and clock when high. density optical disc like BD is being played in low speed. But if the high-density optical disc is played in high speed, it is difficult to adopt the same extraction algorithm to data PLL and PRML architecture used in low speed application. It is because the signal with more than 800MHz should be processed in those architectures. Generally, in the 0.13-${\mu}m$ CMOS technology, it is necessary to have the high speed analog cores and lots of efforts to layout. In this paper, the parallel data PLL and PRML architecture, which enable to process in BD 8x speed of the maximum speed of the high-density optical disc as the extracting data and clock circuit, is proposed. Test results show that the proposed architecture is well operated without processing error at BD 8x speed.
