  • In wireless ad-hoc network, knowing the available bandwidth of the time varying channel is imperative for live video streaming applications. This is because the available bandwidth is varying all the time and strictly limited against the large data size of video streaming. Additionally, adapting the encoding rate to the suitable bit-rate for the network, where an overlarge encoding rate induces congestion loss and playback delay, decreases the loss and delay. While some effective rate controlling methods have been proposed and simulated well like VTP (Video Transport Protocol) [1], implementing to cooperate with the encoder and tuning the parameters are still challenging works. In this paper, we show our result of the implementation experiment of VTP based encoding rate controlling method and then introduce some techniques of our parameter tuning for a video streaming application over wireless environment.

  • As the demand for video streaming has been rapidly increasing recently, video streaming schemes for increasing the efficiency of radio resource has attracted a lot of attention. In this paper, we propose an adaptive video streaming scheme to enhance the efficiency of video streaming by using receivers' caching capability. The proposed streaming scheme can transmit video data on a broadcast basis even when two clients request different video data, only if specific conditions satisfied, while existing schemes can only transmit video data on a broadcast basis only when two clients request the same video data. In this paper, we mathematically derive the average transmission time of the proposed scheme and the approximation of the average transmission time. The accuracy of the mathematical analysis is verified by simulations. Mathematical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the average transmission time, compared to the existing scheme.

  • Because of the explosive growth of mobile devices and development of network technologies, HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) adaptive streaming has become a new trend in video delivery to provide efficient multimedia streaming services. As interest in personalized broadcasting grows, the study of interactive multimedia has been actively pursued. The interactive multimedia service is a method of playing media according to a scenario selected by the user. Providing the interactive multimedia service with the existing HTTP adaptive streaming causes switching delay and buffer underflow according to the point in time when the user selects the scenario while the client streams the interactive multimedia and therefore decreases the user QoE (Quality of Experience). In this paper, we propose an adaptive streaming scheme for interactive multimedia service in HTTP adaptive streaming to provide seamless playback. We design the architecture and prefetching scheme for interactive multimedia streaming.

  • As further Studies on 4th generation mobile telecommunication are progressed, the importance of a Cross-Layer is being increased. However, it has focused on coordination model only between MAC layer and PHY layer. It is necessary to expand into II' layer and upper layers. In this paper, we introduce a Cross-layer optimization which can be used to transmit video data with effect by managing resources among layers. It can gives further more adaptive method to solve QoS model problem than single layer.

  • With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity becoming more common in today's handheld mobile devices, single-chip multi-radio combo-modules, which integrate two or more heterogeneous wireless radios on a single chip, are becoming more and more popular. The key requirement for combo solutions is that the quality of the user experience (QoE) must not be compromised by degrading connectivity performance. Therefore, characterizing and understanding the behaviour of combo-module is of vital importance to ensure this requirement in various environments. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the use of combo-modules on the performance of mobile video streaming over a Wi-Fi network. Our study reveals that the use of combo-modules incurs considerable side effects on QoE for mobile video streaming applications when the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth operate at the same time in the 2.4GHz ISM band. We reveal that rate-based adaptive algorithms, including the most popular adaptive bitrate streaming MPEG-DASH, is more severely affected by this phenomenon than buffer-based adaptive algorithms.

  • This paper proposed and implemented the adaptive transmission middleware for video streaming, which is able to support the adaptive transmission of video data to the fluctuating changes of network environment in the packet-based network and the properties of transmitted video data. The adaptive transmission middleware is made up SR-RTP-based transfer module and TFRC(TCP Friendly Rate Control)-based transfer-rate control module. The SR-RTP-based transfer module supports RTP-based real-time transfer of video data and packet retransmission scheme retransmitting the high-priority packets selectively in the damaged video data to reduce the error induced by the packet loss. Sharing the transmission bandwidth of network with the TCP-based data transfer, the TFRC-based transfer-rate control module controls the transfer rate of video data according to the most allowable transmission bandwidth in the network, so that the transfer rate is controlled adaptively to the fluctuating changes of transmission bandwidth. This paper, for the experiment, applied the adaptive transmission middleware to video streaming in the external Internet environment, and analyzed the effective frame transfer rate and the degree of the streaming jitter to evaluate the performance of packet-loss recovery and adaptive transfer rate control. In the external Internet environment where the packet-loss rate is high a bit, the relatively high streaming performance was showed compared with the case that didn't apply the adaptive transmission middleware.

  • HTTP-based adaptive streaming (HAS) has recently been widely deployed on the Internet. In the HAS system, a video content is encoded at multiple bitrates and the encoded video content is segmented into small parts of fixed durations. The HAS client requests a video segment and stores it in the playout buffer. The rate adaptation algorithm employed in HAS clients dynamically determines the video bitrate depending on the time-varying bandwidth. Many studies have shown that an efficient rate adaptation algorithm is critical to ensuring quality-of-experience in HAS systems. However, existing algorithms have problems estimating the network bandwidth because bandwidth estimation is performed on the client-side application stack. Without the help of transport layer protocols, it is difficult to achieve accurate bandwidth estimation due to the inherent segment-based transmission of the HAS. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach that utilizes the playout buffer occupancy rather than using bandwidth estimates obtained from the application layer. We start with a queueing analysis of the playout buffer. Then, we present a buffer-aware rate adaptation algorithm that is solely based on the mean buffer occupancy. Our simulation results show that compared to conventional algorithms, the proposed algorithm achieves very smooth video quality while delivering a similar average video bitrate.

  • Recently, the web-based adaptive streaming service, DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP), is receiving more attention. However, existing network-based and buffer-based video quality control schemes in DASH environments make oscillation of segment throughput, causing degradation of the quality of experience (QoE) with frequent quality changes and playback interruptions because these schemes do not consider the content characteristics. In this paper, we propose a C-DASH (Content Characteristics based Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) scheme in order to improve the QoE in DASH environments. The C-DASH scheme performs seamless and smooth quality control based on the segment throughput, buffer status, and segment size of the content. Based on simulation results, it is confirmed that the C-DASH scheme can improve the QoE, when compared with the existing quality control schemes.

  • Virtual Reality (VR) has lately gained significant attention primarily driven by the recent market availability of consumer devices, such as mobile phone-based Head Mounted Displays (HMDs). Apart from classic gaming use cases, the delivery of $360^{\circ}$ video is considered as another major application and is expected to be ubiquitous in the near future. However, the delivery and decoding of high-resolution $360^{\circ}$ videos in desirable quality is a challenging task due to network limitations and constraints on available end device decoding and processing. In this paper, we focus on aspects of $360^{\circ}$ video streaming and provide an overview and discussion of possible solutions as well as considerations for future VR video streaming applications. This paper mainly focuses on the status of the standardization activities, Omnidirectional MediA Format (OMAF), to support interoperable $360^{\circ}$ video streaming services. More concretely, MPEG's ongoing work for OMA aims at harmonization of VR video platforms and applications. The paper also discusses the integration in MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH), which is considered as $360^{\circ}$ video streaming services with OMAF content. In context of the general OMAF service architecture.

  • Recently HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) adaptive streaming services have been the subject of much attention. The video quality control scheme of conventional HTTP adaptive streaming services estimates bandwidth using segment throughput and smooths out the sample of segment throughput. However, the conventional scheme has the problem of QoE (Quality of experience) degradation occurring with buffer underflow and frequent quality change due to the fixed number of samples. In order to solve this problem, we propose a video quality control scheme based on segment throughput and buffer occupancy. The proposed scheme determines the number of samples according to the variation of segment throughput. The proposed scheme also controls video quality based on the threshold of bitrate to keep stable buffer occupancy. The simulation results show that proposed scheme improves QoE by preventing buffer underflow and decreasing quality change when compared with the conventional scheme.
