  • This paper proposes a network-adaptive mechanism for HTTP-based video streaming over wireless/mobile networks. To provide adaptive video streaming over wireless/mobile networks, the proposed mechanism consists of a throughput estimation scheme in the time-variant wireless network environment and a video rate selection algorithm used to increase the streaming quality. The adaptive video streaming system with proposed modules is implemented using an open source multimedia framework and is validated over emulated wireless/mobile networks. The emulator helps to model and emulate network conditions based on data collected from actual experiments. The experiment results show that the proposed mechanism provides higher video quality than the existing system provides and a rate of video streaming almost void of freezing.

  • To provide high-quality media streaming service over the best-effort Internet, an efficient streaming system with a network-adaptive transport is essential. By adopting FEC-based adaptive transport and by matching it to the priority of media packets, in this paper, an enhanced MPEG-4 streaming system is implemented. The implemented adaptive transport can complement the existing MPEG-4 streaming server with components such as elementary stream provider, sync layer and DMIF layer. Sync layer packets of each MPEG-4 elementary stream are prioritized and then selectively dropped at the sender to match the currently available bandwidth. Also, with the proposed adaptive transport module, the level of FEC protection is dynamically adjusted based on the underlying network condition. With preliminary verification over the emulated network testbed, it is shown that the proposed implementation can mitigate the impact of network fluctuation and thus improve the quality of streaming.

  • Because of the explosive growth of mobile devices and development of network technologies, HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) adaptive streaming has become a new trend in video delivery to provide efficient multimedia streaming services. As interest in personalized broadcasting grows, the study of interactive multimedia has been actively pursued. The interactive multimedia service is a method of playing media according to a scenario selected by the user. Providing the interactive multimedia service with the existing HTTP adaptive streaming causes switching delay and buffer underflow according to the point in time when the user selects the scenario while the client streams the interactive multimedia and therefore decreases the user QoE (Quality of Experience). In this paper, we propose an adaptive streaming scheme for interactive multimedia service in HTTP adaptive streaming to provide seamless playback. We design the architecture and prefetching scheme for interactive multimedia streaming.

  • Recently, various services which use the fused form of broadcasting and communication are being offered over the Internet globally. To provide various interactive services through connected smart TV on wired or wireless network, the seamless multimedia service is key feature. In this paper, Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH)is adopted to develop cost-effective adaptive streaming system for Open Hybrid TV(OHTV) service. This system can provide seamless adaptive streaming service for IP VOD, Video Clips, Ad insertion which are defined in OHTV.

  • Recently, due to the prevalence of various mobile devices and wireless broadband networks, there has been a significant increase in interest and demand for multimedia streaming services such as the mobile IPTV. In such a wireless broadband network, transmitting a continuous stream of multimedia data is difficult to achieve due to mobile stations (MSs) movement. Providing Quality of Service (QoS) for multimedia video streaming applications requires the server and/or client to be network-aware and adaptive. Therefore, in order to deploy a mobile IPTV service in wireless broadband networks, offering users efficient wireless resource utilization and seamlessly offering user perceived QoS are important issues. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive streaming scheme, called MARC (Mobile-aware Adaptive Rate Control), which adjusts the quality of bit-stream and transmission rate of video streaming based on the wireless channel status and network status. The proposed scheme can control the rate of multimedia streaming to be suitable for the wireless channel status by using awareness information of the wireless channel quality and the mobile station location. The proposed scheme can provide a seamless multimedia playback service in wireless broadband networks in addition to improving the QoS of multimedia streaming services. The proposed MARC scheme alleviates the discontinuity of multimedia playback and allocates a suitable client buffer to the wireless broadband network. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

  • This paper proposes a quality-of-service(QoS)-adaptive proxy-switching scheme for multimedia streaming over the Internet. characteristic of multimedia-object about that effect on weight and transport-time causes Streaming Application is restricted to high-quality-service. But using of Proxy or Cache can reduce restraint of media stream. However previous scheme propose only structure of proxy and skill of streaming-object. It couldn't propose proper scheme about limited cache and proxy error occasion. We propose adaptive-proxy-switching mechanism for solution about some problems that caused by single-proxy and limited cache in case of streaming service.

  • Recently, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) adaptive streaming service is attracting attention. The existing quality adaptive scheme of HTTP adaptive streaming service adjusts the video quality according to the network bandwidth or the client buffer size. However, the problem with the existing quality adaptive scheme is the QoE (Quality of Experience) degradation caused by the unnecessary quality change that occurs due to frequent bandwidth change or fixed buffer threshold. We propose a video quality maintenance scheme that improves average video quality and minimizes unnecessary quality change in order to improve the QoE of HTTP adaptive streaming service in the changing network environment. The proposed scheme maintains high quality for a long time by setting the quality maintenance duration to be long when buffer occupancy and video quality are high. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme improves QoE by improving the average video quality and minimizing the quality change.

  • CISCO VNI predicted an average annual growth rate of 66% for mobile video traffic between 2014 and 2019 and accordingly much academic research related to video streaming has been initiated. In video streaming, Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) is a streaming technique in which a source video is stored on a server at variable encoding rates and each streaming user requests the most appropriate video encoding rate considering their channel capacity. However, these days, ABR related studies are only focusing on real-time rate adaptation omitting energy efficiency though it is one of the most important requirement for mobile devices, which may cause dissatisfaction for streaming users. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient prefetching based dynamic adaptive streaming technique by considering the limited characteristics of the batteries used in mobile devices, in order to reduce the energy waste and provide a similar level of service in terms of the average video rate compared to the latest ABR streaming technique which does not consider the energy consumption. The simulation results is showing that our proposed scheme saves 65~68% of energy at the average global mobile download speed compared to the latest high performance ABR algorithm while providing similar rate adaptation performance.

  • In order to provide smart devices with high quality multimedia streaming services, an adaptive streaming technique over HTTP has been received much attention recently and the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) standard has been established. In DASH, however, the technique to select an appropriate quality of multimedia based on the performance metrics measured in a smart device might have some difficulties to reflect the capabilities of other neighboring smart devices and dynamic network conditions in real time. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a novel software agent approach, called DASH agent (DA), which gathers and analyzes the device capabilities and dynamic network conditions in real time and finally determines the highest achievable quality of segment to meet the best Quality of Experience (QoE) in current situations. The simulation results show that our approach provides higher quality of multimedia segments with less frequency of quality changes to lower quality of multimedia segments.
