  • For any $K$ > $2/{\pi}$ we determine the optimal constant $L(K)$ for which the following holds. If $u$, $tilde{u}$ are conjugate harmonic functions on the unit disc with $\tilde{u}(0)=0$, then $$ {\int}_{-\pi}^{\pi}{\mid}\tilde{u}(e^{i\phi}){\mid}\frac{d{\phi}}{2{\pi}}{\leq}K{\int}_{-\pi}^{\pi}{\mid}u(e^{i{\phi}}){\mid}{\log}^+{\mid}u(e^{i{\phi}}){\mid}\frac{d{\phi}}{2{\pi}}+L(K).$$ We also establish a related estimate for orthogonal harmonic functions given on Euclidean domains as well as an extension concerning orthogonal martingales under differential subordination.

  • The paper presents simulations of the Brazilian test using two numerical models. Both models are regularized in order to obtain results independent of discretization. The first one, called gradient damage, is refined by additional averaging equation which contains gradient terms and an internal length scale as localization limiter. In the second one, called viscoplastic consistency model, the yield function depends on the viscoplastic strain rate. In this model regularization properties are governed by the assumed strain rate. The two models are implemented in the FEAP finite element package and compared in this paper. Parameter studies of the split test are performed in order to point out the features of each model.

  • Rural people of Sudan are endowed with a deep knowledge concerning the utilization of different tree species. However research on the local knowledge related to tree species utilization still lacks adequate attention. The study objectives were to identify the existing local knowledge related to the utilization of the tree species and the existing threats to the availability of the trees. A total of 300 respondents were selected randomly from Rashad district in Nuba Mountains in 2011. Semi-structured interview, direct observation, group discussion, preference ranking and direct matrix ranking were used to collect the data. The study results revealed that people of Nuba Mountains utilize different tree species for food, medicinal purposes, fodder, firewood, construction and cultural ceremonies. The study results also indicated that the availability of trees is negatively influenced by firewood collection, agricultural expansion, drought, overgrazing and charcoal production. The study concluded that local knowledge has crucial role in tree species utilization in Nuba Mountains. Further researches to document and substantiate the local knowledge on useful tree species are highly recommended.

  • DuPont Teijin Films (DTF) have developed engineered substrates specifically for the flexible electronics market. $Teonex^{(R)}Q65$ is a biaxially oriented crystalline polyester with a tailored surface and it is emerging as a competitive material for the base substrate in OLED displays and active matrix backplanes. Given the dimensional reproducibility requirements in the display applications, uncontrolled moisture absorption during the processing cycle could potentially be far more significant than the inherent shrinkage of the base substrate. Understanding these effects and optimising the processing steps involved in device manufacture will be critical to achieving the ultimate performance that can be achieved with the base substrate.

  • Vehicle evaluation is performed on the proving ground, and durability test and dynamic test cost lots of money and time. Doing replace real vehicle experiment with similar experiment environment, it will take us much more useful advantages. Suspension simulator is required the robust and high-reliability and used widely. But it's natural of high-leveled control technique to manage to be fitted fluid system's property and complex that is for the lack of self-damping, nonlinearity, compressibility. In designing and evaluating simulator, it is important to understand the capability of kinematic and static performances. In this paper, an kinematic modeling and analysis has been presented using ADAMS to design that can reproduce longitudinal, lateral, and vertical force.

  • This paper aims at assessing the seismic performance of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) based on sets of recorded ground motions. For the simplest configuration of a structure-TMD assembly, in a comprehensive study characteristic response quantities are derived and statistically evaluated. Optimal tuning of TMD parameters is discussed and evaluated. The response reduction by application of a TMD is quantified depending on the structural period, inherent damping of the stand-alone structure, and ratio of TMD mass to structural mass. The effect of detuning on the stroke of the TMD and on the structural response is assessed and quantified. It is verified that a TMD damping coefficient larger than the optimal one reduces the peak deflection of the TMD spring significantly, whereas the response reduction of the main structure remains almost unaffected. Analytical relations for quantifying the effect of a TMD are derived and subsequently evaluated. These relations allow the engineer in practice a fast and yet accurate assessment of the TMD performance.

  • A probabilistic study of a reinforced earth wall in a frictional soil using the surface response methodology (RSM) is presented. A deterministic model based on numerical simulations is used (Abdelouhab et al. 2011, 2012b) and the serviceability limit state (SLS) is considered in the analysis. The model computes the maximum horizontal displacement of the wall. The response surface methodology is utilized for the assessment of the Hasofer-Lind reliability index and is optimized by the use of a genetic algorithm. The soil friction angle and the unit weight are considered as random variables while studying the SLS. The assumption of non-normal distribution for the random variables has an important effect on the reliability index for the practical range of values of the wall horizontal displacement.

  • Background: In this study, we aimed to determine platelet indices such as platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), Plateletcrit (PCT) platelet count (PLT) in lung cancer cases, and evaluate any relationships between these parameters and stage or histologic types. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study covered 44 lung cancer patients and 47 healthy subjects. Platelet indices including PLT, PCT, MPV, PDW were estimated and compared with normal subjects. The results were evaluated statistically. Results: The PDW value was significantly higher in the cancer group compared to the control group; however, the values for PCT and MPV were lower. Conclusions: We suggest potential use of platelet indices in diagnosis of lung cancer.

  • The paper examines, in the light of current historiography, the recent trends in the application and applicability of the World Historical studies on the Indian Ocean scenario. Calling for the combination of the breadth of the World Historical studies with the analysis of a historical scenario in its specific spatio-temporal context-instead of a synchronic approach-the present study takes a close look at commerce and politics in the western Indian Ocean in the light of an early 14th century Latin Crusade tract, How to Defeat the Saracens by William of Adam (Guillelmus Ade, Tractatus quomodo Sarraceni sunt expugnandi), a Dominican friar. The text offers remarkable insights into the interlocking of the Indian Ocean and the South Asian subcontinent with the Mamluk Sultanate, the Ilkhanid realm and the Crusades. The paper argues for what is now termed as braided and connected histories.

  • Let $f=(f_n)$ be a nonnegative submartingale such that ${\parallel}f{\parallel}{\infty}{\leq}1\;and\;g=(g_n)$ be a martingale, adapted to the same filtration, satisfying $${\mid}d_{gn}{\mid}{\leq}{\mid}df_n{\mid},\;n=0,\;1,\;2,\;....$$ The paper contains the proof of the sharp inequality $$\limits^{sup}_ n\;\mathbb{E}{\Phi}({\mid}g_n{\mid}){\leq}{\Phi}(1)$$ for a class of convex increasing functions ${\Phi}\;on\;[0,\;{\infty}]$, satisfying certain growth condition. As an application, we show a continuous-time version for stochastic integrals and a related estimate for smooth functions on Euclidean domain.
