  • In this study, we propose the design of optimized pRBFNNs-based night vision face recognition system using PCA algorithm. It is difficalt to obtain images using CCD camera due to low brightness under surround condition without lighting. The quality of the images distorted by low illuminance is improved by using night vision camera and histogram equalization. Ada-Boost algorithm also is used for the detection of face image between face and non-face image area. The dimension of the obtained image data is reduced to low dimension using PCA method. Also we introduce the pRBFNNs as recognition module. The proposed pRBFNNs consists of three functional modules such as the condition part, the conclusion part, and the inference part. In the condition part of fuzzy rules, input space is partitioned by using Fuzzy C-Means clustering. In the conclusion part of rules, the connection weights of pRBFNNs is represented as three kinds of polynomials such as linear, quadratic, and modified quadratic. The essential design parameters of the networks are optimized by means of Differential Evolution.

  • In this paper, we design a hybrid system for recognition and tracking realized with the aid of polynomial based RBFNNs pattern classifier and particle filter. The RBFNN classifier is built by learning the training data for diverse pose images. The optimized parameters of RBFNN classifier are obtained by Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO). Testing data for pose image is used as a face image obtained under real situation, where the face image is detected by AdaBoost algorithm. In order to improve the recognition performance for a detected image, pose estimation as preprocessing step is carried out before the face recognition step. PCA is used for pose estimation, the pose of detected image is assigned for the built pose by considering the featured difference between the previously built pose image and the newly detected image. The recognition of detected image is performed through polynomial based RBFNN pattern classifier, and if the detected image is equal to target for tracking, the target will be traced by particle filter in real time. Moreover, when tracking is failed by PF, Adaboost algorithm detects facial area again, and the procedures of both the pose estimation and the image recognition are repeated as mentioned above. Finally, experimental results are compared and analyzed by using Honda/UCSD data known as benchmark DB.

  • In this paper, we describe a study of a vehicle detection method based on a Boosting Classifier which uses Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) features and Image Segmentation techniques. An input image is segmented by means of a split and merge algorithm. Then, the two largest segmented regions are removed in order to reduce the search region and speed up processing time. The HOG features are then calculated for each pixel in the search region. In order to detect the vehicle region we used the AdaBoost (adaptive boost) method, which is well known for classifying samples with two classes. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, 537 training images were used to train and learn the classifier, followed by 500 non-training images to provide the recognition rate. From these experiments we were able to detect the proper image 98.34% of the time for the 500 non-training images. In conclusion, the proposed method can be used for detecting the location of a vehicle in an intelligent vehicle control system.

  • Facial analysis is used in many applications like face recognition systems, human-computer interface through head movements or facial expressions, model based coding, or virtual reality. In all these applications a very precise extraction of facial feature points are necessary. In this paper we presents a method for automatic extraction of the facial features Points such as mouth corners, eye corners, eyebrow corners. First, face region is detected by AdaBoost-based object detection algorithm. Then a combination of three kinds of feature energy for facial features are computed; valley energy, intensity energy and edge energy. After feature area are detected by searching horizontal rectangles which has high feature energy. Finally, a corner detection algorithm is applied on the end region of each feature area. Because we integrate three feature energy and the suggested estimation method for valley energy and intensity energy are adaptive to the illumination change, the proposed feature extraction method is robust under various conditions.

  • Rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (RCFST) column, a type of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST), is widely used in compression members of structures because of its advantages. This paper proposes a robust machine learning-based framework for predicting the ultimate compressive strength of RCFST columns under both concentric and eccentric loading. The gradient boosting neural network (GBNN), an efficient and up-to-date ML algorithm, is utilized for developing a predictive model in the proposed framework. A total of 890 experimental data of RCFST columns, which is categorized into two datasets of concentric and eccentric compression, is carefully collected to serve as training and testing purposes. The accuracy of the proposed model is demonstrated by comparing its performance with seven state-of-the-art machine learning methods including decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), support vector machines (SVM), deep learning (DL), adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and categorical gradient boosting (CatBoost). Four available design codes, including the European (EC4), American concrete institute (ACI), American institute of steel construction (AISC), and Australian/New Zealand (AS/NZS) are refereed in another comparison. The results demonstrate that the proposed GBNN method is a robust and powerful approach to obtain the ultimate strength of RCFST columns.

  • This paper proposes an effective method for classifying emotions of the music from its acoustical signals. Two feature sets, timbre and tempo, are directly extracted from the modified discrete cosine transform coefficients (MDCT), which are the output of partial MP3 (MPEG 1 Layer 3) decoder. Our tempo feature extraction method is based on the long-term modulation spectrum analysis. In order to effectively combine these two feature sets with different time resolution in an integrated system, a classifier with two layers based on AdaBoost algorithm is used. In the first layer the MDCT-driven timbre features are employed. By adding the MDCT-driven tempo feature in the second layer, the classification precision is improved dramatically.

  • Face detection using AdaBoost algorithm is capable of processing images rapidly while having high detection rates. It seemed to be the fastest and the most robust and it is still today. Many improvements or extensions of this method have been proposed. However, previous approaches only deal with upright faces. They suffer from limited discriminant capability for rotated faces as these methods apply the same features for both upright and rotated faces. To solve this problem, it is necessary that we rotate input images or make independently trained detectors. However, this can be slow and can require a lot of training data, since each classifier requires the computation of many different image features. This paper proposes a robust algorithm for finding rotated faces within an image. It reduces the computational and sample complexity, by finding common features that can be shared across the classes. And it will be able to apply with multi-class object detection.

  • Anthropometry has been broadly explored in various fields including automobile industry, home electronic appliances, medical appliances and sports goods with aiming at reaching satisfaction to consumer's need and efficiency. However, current technologies to measure a human body still have barriers in which the methods mostly seem to be contingent on expensive devices such as scanner and digital measuring instruments and to be directly touchable to the body when obtaining body size.. Therefore, in this paper, we present a general method to automatically extract size of body from a real body image acquired from a camera and to utilize it into recommend systems including clothing and bicycle fitting. At first, Haar-like features and AdaBoost algorithm are employed to detect body position. Then features of body can be recognized using AAM. Finally clothing and bicycle recommending modules have been implemented and experimented to validate the proposed method.

  • In this study, we propose an automated smile analysis system for self smile training. The proposed system detects the face area from the input image with the AdaBoost algorithm, followed by identifying facial features based on the face shape model generated by using an ASM(active shpae model). Once facial features are identified, the lip line and teeth area necessary for smile analysis are detected. It is necessary to judge the relationship between the lip line and teeth for smiling degree analysis, and to this end, the second differentiation of the teeth image is carried out, and then individual the teeth areas are identified by means of histogram projection on the vertical axis and horizontal axis. An analysis of the lip line and individual the teeth areas allows for an automated analysis of smiling degree of users, enabling users to check their smiling degree on a real time basis. The developed system in this study exhibited an error of 8.6% or below, compared to previous smile analysis results released by dental clinics for smile training, and it is expected to be used directly by users for smile training.
