Full-duplex (FD) technologies enable wireless nodes to simultaneously transmit and receive signal using the same frequency-band. The FD modes could improve their physical layer throughputs. However, in the wireless ad hoc networks, the FD communications also produce new interference risks. On the one hand, the interference ranges (IRs) of the nodes are enlarged when they work in the FD mode. On the other hand, for each FD pair, the FD communication may cause the potential hidden terminal problems to appear around the both sides. In this paper, to avoid the interference risks, we first model the IR of each node when it works in the FD mode, and then analyze the conditions to be satisfied among the transmission ranges (TRs), carrier-sensing ranges (CSRs), and IRs of the FD pair. Furthermore, in the media access control (MAC) layer, we propose a specific method and protocol for collision avoidance. Based on the modified Omnet++ simulator, we conduct the simulations to validate and evaluate the proposed FD MAC protocol, showing that it can reduce the collisions effectively. When the hidden terminal problem is serious, compared with the existing typical FD MAC protocol, our protocol can increase the system throughput by 80%~90%.

A ship ad-hoc network (SANET) can provide ships with diverse multimedia services by replacing expensive satellite communications. While ITU-R M. 1842-1, standards for maritime VHF band digital communications, can be used as the specifications of physical layer for SANETs, no standards are specified for higher layers of SANETs. In this paper, we propose a ship ad-hoc communication (SAC) protocol for SANETs, based on medium access control (MAC) and routing protocols for terrestrial ad-hoc networks. SAC protocol is a cross-layer protocol which combines MAC and routing into one algorithm and considers maritime environments, including the existence of neighboring ships, the possibility of routing to a destination, and changing the communication mode in case of VHF channel failure.

This paper presents a transmission power control MAC protocol that allows terminals to vary transmit power level on data frame basis in ad hoc network. Unlike the IEEE 802.11 approach, we do not use the RTS/CTS packets to silence the neighboring nodes. Instead, channel gain and distance information between transmitter and receiver terminal are inserted in the RTS/CTS packets. These informations are used to dynamically bound the transmission power. Simulation results indicate that, compared to the GMAC, the proposed MAC protocol achieves a increase in the average frame delivery ratio and a decrease in the average frame delay.

In this paper, we propose a multi-channel MAC protocol to improve the channel efficiency and network performance in wireless ad hoc networks. There are two main problems encountered in designing multi-channel MAC protocols. The first problem is the rendezvous problem and the second is multi-channel hidden node problem. In order to solve these problems, most of previous researches that have considered multi-channel MAC protocols use a common control channel to exchange control packets. However, they have a bottleneck problem at common control channel as increasing the number of data channels. The proposed MAC protocol solves the multi-channel hidden node problem using a TDMA scheme and increases the network throughput because transmitting and receiving data at the same time is possible. Also, since there is no common control channel, the network does not suffer from the common control channel saturation problem. Moreover, it achieves energy savings by allowing nodes that are not involved in communication to go into sleep mode. Simulation results show that the proposed MAC protocol improves the network throughput and channel efficiency and provides energy savings.

In this paper, we propose a new frame structure and the underlying dynamic resource control mechanism to support an integrated service, including a real-time (RT) service that requires to serve the end-to-end delay performance, as well as non-real-time (NRT) service, using Self-Organizing Time Division Multiple Access (SO-TDMA)-based MAC protocol in a multi-hop ad-hoc maritime communication network. The underlying frame structure is dynamically configured by resource allocation to guarantee the average target outage performance of the real-time service. Toward this end, we analyze the average outage probability and its performance is verified for the proposed frame structure by simulation.
In ubiquitous environments, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) protocol is a typical service used to improve the quality of life for humans. The Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) protocol, a part of ITS, needs further study with regards to its support for high reliability, high speed mobility, data transmission efficiency, and so on. The IEEE 802.11 standard provides a high data rate channel, but it was designed for peer-to-peer network protocols. IEEE 802.11p also provides a high data rate channel, however, it only facilitates communication between roadside and on-board equipment. A VANET has characteristics that enable its topology to change rapidly; it can also be expanded to a multi-hop range network during communication. Therefore, the VANET protocol needs a way to infer the current topology information relating to VANET equipped vehicles. In this paper, we present the Multi-Beacon MAC Protocol, and propose a method to resolve the problem of beacon collisions in VANET through the use of this Multi-Beacon MAC protocol. Evaluation of the performance of Multi-Beacon MAC protocol by means of both mathematical analyses and simulation experiments indicate that the proposed method can effectively reduce beacon collisions and improve the throughput and the delay between vehicles in VANET systems.

In this paper, we propose the AMBM(: Adaptive Multi-channel Backoff Machisum) -Mac protocol to provide high throughput for non-safety applications in VANET(: Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks) environment. The proposed protocol guarantees the quality of service of non-safety packets by dynamically adjusting CW(: Channel Window) of WSA(: WAVE Service Advertisement) to maximize throughput between non-safety packets of different priority. It also shows that allocating a large amount of time for channel coordination and time slot reservation for SC and dynamically adjusting CW and CCI as nodes increase to reduces transmission delay than IEEE 1609.9, C-MAC(: Coordinated multi-channel MAC, and Q-VCI(: QoS Variable CCH Interval) protocols.

In this paper, we first analyze the delay performance of Dynamic Space-time Subframe (DSTS)-based frame structure which has been proposed to support the real-time service as well as non real-time service, using Ad hoc Self-Organizing Time Division Multiple Access (ASO-TDMA) MAC protocol, especially when transmitting a MAC SDU with two or more MAC PDUs, in a multi-hop ad-hoc maritime communication network. We propose two key transmission schemes: contiguous DSTS reservation which guarantees the end-to-end delay for the multiple PDUs, and adaptive transmission probability control schemes to maximize the system throughput. Our simulation results show that the proposed schemes outperform the system throughput of the existing transmission schemes, while supporting the real-time requirement.
