Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of Ryodoraku and association of Ryodoraku in Idiopathic Facial Paralysis Patients Methods : Subjects were 53 patients with Facial palsy patients and 28 normal people. We calculated the average Ryodoraku score(RS, ${\mu}A$) and each variation from physiologic range of 12 Ryodoraku points, and investigated the incidence when left and right points were simultaneously below(bilateral deficiency) or above(bilateral excess) physiologic range. Results : The electric current value of several meridian of normal group was more higher in idiopathic facial palsy group than in normal group. The measurement value of Ryodoraku followed sex was not significant statistically. Conclusions : These findings suggest that the measurement value of several Meridians of Ryodoraku is more higher in idiopathic facial palsy group than in normal group, because Ryodoraku has low correlation with Parasympathetic nerve.
Objective : This study was undertaken to determine if Juglandis Semen herbal acupuncture(Ja) has a protective effect against glycerol-induced acute renal failure in rats. Methods : Rats were dehydrated for 24hr and then injected with 5 ml/kg of 50 % glycerol, one-half of dose in each hindlimb muscle. In experiments for Ja effect, rats received 0.1 ml of Ja extraction in both sides of corresponding $Sh\grave{e}nsh\bar{u}(BL_{23})$ of human body and non-acupuncture points(the root of tail) for 3 days after injection of glycerol. The experimental group were divided into the Normal group, the Control group, the Ja to $Sh\grave{e}nsh\bar{u}(BL_{23})$ group(Ja-AS), the Ja to non-acupuncture points group(Ja-AN). Results : There were significant decrease of urine volume, BUN, fractional glucose excretion, fractional phosphate excretion, total protein level in Ja-AS as compared with the control group. Conclusion : This suggests that Ja-AS could be used in prevention and treatment of acute renal failure. However, the precise mechanisms of Ja protection remain to be determined.
Objectives : In each section of Huangdineijing, we reviewed how the actual clinical application of Five-Transport-points was reflected and looked at the pattern of the application at the time. Methods : The contents related to Five-Transport-points in Huangdineijing were collected from each part, and analyzed. Results : There was a great difference in the number and contents of the clinical application of each Five-Transport-point for each 12 meridian, and only 28.3% of all Five-Transport-points had been related to clinical treatment. In addition, in specific applications, spring point, stream point, and sea point were used more often than well point, and Five-Transport-points between the same meridian or different meridians were used in combination as needed. Conclusions : Five-Transport-points described in Huangdineijing are intended to be operated within the overall framework structurally or functionally with a certain principle, but as a result of comprehensive analysis of specific examples of clinical application, there was a difference in the application between Five-Transport-points. This indicates that at the time of the establishment of Huangdineijing, which was the early stage of the development of Traditional East Asian Medicine, a variety of miscellaneous acupuncture methodologies were used in addition to those based on five elements principle.
This short review article presents a current overview of existing publications and scientific results regarding liquid (ear) acupuncture. The injection of liquids into defined acupuncture points of the ear is not a method commonly used in the Western world. The term liquid acupuncture has different definitions, which makes understanding each definition and differentiating one from the other difficult. General terms like pharmacopuncture, homeosiniatry, and liquid acupuncture, which all describe the method of injecting different kinds of drugs into a defined body acupuncture point, are used. This article presents the history of liquid acupuncture, as well as the current scientific state of the art, from the point of view of two European researchers. Some articles are discussed and a few practical examples are presented.
Objective : This study is designed to evaluate the changes of clinical symptoms after the therapy of acupuncture in the 18 patients with Otitis media with effusion who were treated at our hospital from June 1th, 2000 to June 30th, 2001. Methods : The patients received acupuncture on the points of TE5, G41, TE6, SI5, G38, K2 and venesection on the part of posterior ear. Results : The results of treatment with acupucture showed that 4 of 18 patients achieved excellent recovery and 12 achieved good recovery. Total 16 of 18 patients, except 2, improved clinical symptoms after the therapy as a result. Conclusion : Acupuncture successfully improved conditions of the patients with Otitis media with effusion.
Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the effect of acupuncture with various scales on symptoms of Idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Methods: Subjects were voluntarily recruited through newspapers and internet advertisement. All the subjects were confirmed as idiopathic parkinson's disease by a neurologist. The acupuncture therapy was performed twice a week for 4 weeks by oriental medical doctor at Kyung-hee University hospital. Patients were randomly assigned to three groups : sham acupuncture group, acupuncture treatment group and Sasang-Constitution acupuncture treatment group. Acupun cture points used in acupuncture treatment group were $GB_{34}$, $LR_3$, and $ST_{36}$, which were proven to be effective in rat Parkinson's disease study. Acupuncture points used in sham treatment were non-acupoints near $GB_{34}$, $LR_3$, and $ST_{36}$. In Sasang-Constitution acupuncture treatment, we classfied Sasang constitution of patients by QSCCII. Acupuncture was applied based on theory of Korean medicine. The patient's symptoms were assessed at baseline and after 4 weeks of treatment by one evaluator with Unified Kingdom Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), modified Hoehn-Yahr(H-Y) stage, and Schwab & England activ ity of daily living and freezing of gait questionnaire (FOGQ). Results : The results were as follows ; 1. UPDRS IV score differences between sham group and Sasang-Constitution acupuncture treatment were statistically significant(p=0.001). 2. UPDRS total score differences between Sasang-Constitution acupuncture treatment and acupuncture treatment group, Sasang-Constitution acupuncture treatment and sham group were statistically significant(p=0.041, p=0.014). 5. FOGQ score differences between Sasang-Constitution acupuncture treatment and acupuncture treatment group, Sasang-Constitution acupuncture treatment and sham group were statistically significant(p=0.001, p=0.001). Conclusion : The results suggest Sasang-Constitution acupuncture treatment can be applicable to improve symptoms in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to show the application to add the Dong-Qi therapy of the Dong-Si acupuncture to exercise therapy of the movement system impairment syndrome(MSIS) and to determine the best acupuncture point for the Dong-Qi therapy. Methods : We reviewed Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndrome and Movement System Impairment Syndromes Of The Extremities, Cervical and Thoracic Spines written by Sahrmann SA. to show the exercise therapy of the sort of MSIS. We reviewed complete works of Yang Wei Jie to show the acupuncture points of the Dong-Si acupuncture and the Dong-Qi therapy. Results : We showed the acupuncture point of the Dong-Si acupuncture by each type of MSIS based on the reference book of MSIS, the Dong-Si acupuncture. Also, we selected and tabulated the best possible acupuncture point of the Dong-Si acupuncture which could minimize a side effect of acupuncture during the therapeutic exercise by each type of MSIS. Conclusion : A specific acupuncture point of the Dong-Si acupuncture could be chosen for a specific MSIS therapeutic exercise. The best possible acupuncture point could be chosen when selecting an acupuncture point of the Dong-Si acupuncture.
Objectives : There has been a need for developing and establishing operational curriculum for the education of acupuncture, but defining the level and step of the acupuncture education in clinical perspectives was not thoroughly recognized so far. Methods : We analysed the usage of acupuncture points in the official textbook to recognize the most frequently used acupoints in clinical medicine. It was found that $ST_{36}$$LI_4$$SP_6$$HT_7$$LR_3$$CV_{12}$$BL_{23}$$CV_6$$BL_{20}$$CV_4$$LI_{11}$$PC_6$$KI_3$$GB_{20}$$GV_{20}$$GB_{34}$$BL_{18}$$GV_{14}$$BL_{17}$$BL_{40}$ are the most frequently used 20 acupuncture points and GB(足少陽擔經), CV(任脈), ST(足陽明胃經) are the most frequently used meridians. Results : The $ST_{36}$, $GB_{34}$, $LI_{11}$ and GB(足太陽膀胱經) meridian are most frequently used for muskuloskeletal disease, $ST_{36}$, $LI_4$, $LI_{11}$ and GB(足太陽膀胱經) meridian are most frequently used for neuromuskular disease, and $ST_{36}$, $CV_{12}$, $BL_{20}$ and CV(任脈) meridian are most frequently used for the digestive system disorders. Conclusions : This study was the first systematic approach to get essential acupuncture points for the education of clinical perspectives of TKM especially for the acupuncture and moxibustion. We found that the $ST_{36}$, $GB_{34}$, $LI_{11}$ and GB(足太陽膀胱經) are the most frequently used acupuncture point and meridian. This study will be used for the development of TKM clinical curriculum.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to search acupuncture & moxibustion treatment on hemafecia. Methods : We search thirty-seven oriental medical literatures related to hemafecia and arrange the articles according to the etiological cause, pathogenesis, acupuncture & moxibustion treatment. Results : 1. Hemafecia is mainly caused by intrinsic factors such as inadequate diet, habitual drinking, indiscreet sex and others. 2. Hemafecia is mainly due to the intestinal febrile state, but sometimes due to the infirmity of whole body energy including digestive system. 3. Governor Vessel Meridian, Bladder Meridian, Spleen Meridian and Stomach Meridian are frequently used for acupuncture & moxibustion treatment on hemafecia. 4. B57, GV1 are most frequently used for acupuncture & moxibustion treatment on hemafecia. 5. CV12, CV6, S36 are most frequently used for moxibustion treatment on hemafecia. 6.
