Background: This study aimed to investigate the demographic characteristics of patients with knee pain caused by traffic accidents and test the effectiveness of Korean medicine (KM) treatment. Methods: The medical charts of 114 inpatients with knee pain caused by a traffic accident were reviewed from July 1, 2019 to October 31, 2019 at Bucheon Jaseng Hospital of KM. The patients' demographics including gender, age, period of hospitalization, and type of pharmacopuncture and herbal medicine prescribed were reviewed. The Numeric Rating Scale scores and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores were used to assess subjective knee pain. Results: There were more females (55%) than males in this study. Patients were more likely to be in their 30s (27.2%), be hospitalized for 11-14 days (41.2%), treated with Hwangryunhaedok pharmacopuncture (78.1%), and be prescribed Hwalhyeoljitong decoction (62.3%).The mean Numeric Rating Scale score for patients with knee pain caused by a traffic accident decreased significantly from 4.26 ± 1.39 to 2.53 ± 1.60 (p < 0.001), and the mean Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index score also decreased significantly from 32.72 ± 18.36 to 23.40 ± 15.80 (p < 0.001) following KM treatment. Conclusion: As a result of analyzing 114 hospitalized patients with knee joint pain due to TAs, inpatients were more likely to be female (55%), a patient in their 30s (27.2%), and be a patient hospitalized for 11-14 days (41.2%). KM treatment of traumatic knee injury using pharmacopuncture therapy and herbal medicine can be an may be effective at reducing pain, and healing functional disorders of the knee.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to report the effectiveness of the combination of Korean medicine therapy on elderly patients with delirium due to overdose of sedative-hypnotics. Methods: The patient was diagnosed with delirium, which occurred after an overdose of sedative-hypnotics. The patient received Korean Medicine treatment, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion and psychotherapy, and other treatments. The evaluation variables to check the effectiveness of the interventions were the Korean Version of the Delirium Rating Scale-Revised-98 (K-DRS-R-98) Mini-Mental State Examination-Korean (MMSE-K) Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) and Manual Muscle Test (MMT). Results: During the hospitalization period, the K-DRS-R-98 score decreased from 31 to 4, MMSE-K score increased from 18 to 26. CDR score decreased from 2 to 0. MMT in the Right lower extremity was improved. Normal daily activities were possible. Conclusions: Combining Korean Medicine treatments, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, psychotherapy, and other treatments, may help alleviate delirium.
Objectives : During the past three decades there has been a significant evolution of laser acupuncture application in the nature of the clinical approach and the research of traditional medicine and laser therapy field. However, there have been no standard and guideline of laser equipment can be applied as laser acupuncture. This study aims to investigate the condition of laser equipment required as a laser acupuncture method. Methods : First, we performed literature search using the Medline(from 1999 to Oct 2008) to confirm types and ranges of laser equipments that can be applied as laser acupuncture. In addition, we investigated the characters of acupoints such as sites and depths, and compared with penetrating depths of each laser. Results : A total of 37 articles for clinical studies using laser acupuncture were selected, and 41 lasers were used. GaAs laser was used three times, GaAlAs laser 14, InGaAlP 18, HeNe laser 4, and Argon laser and CO2 laser were used one time, respectively. From all 361 points of fourteen meridians, depths of 341 points(94.5%) were 1 cun(2.3-3.2cm) or less. The mean depth of all points was 0.48 cun(1.1-1.5cm). Hence, it appeared that the majority of therapeutic lasers satisfied with the condition. HeNe, InGaAlP, GaAlAs, GaAs lasers are recommended for laser acupuncture, however, it may plausible that other surgical lasers could be used as the laser acupuncture, because it have the biostimulation effect to some extent, too. Conclusions : It is suggested that to select appropriate laser type and give the adequate output power to reach the acupoints under the skin using laser acupuncture. Further evaluation and research for the condition of laser acupuncture are warranted.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to establish a category for acupuncture therapy by appropriate etiological analysis and differenciation of edema. Methods : We arrange Huang Di Nei Jing and thirty four kinds of literature about edema. Results : 1. The cause of Edema is functional disorder of lung, spleen, kidney, bladder and tri-energizer by six kinds of natural factors, internal injury and loss of nutritions. 2. Edema compartmentalize into the water of five zang organs, several kinds of edema(e,g. 5, 10, 12, 24) and yang & yin edema. 3. An ultimate cause of edema pathogenesis is the disturbance of Qi function in kidney. 4. In view of the results so far achived,'GV26(水淸)' is a vitally important acupoint in acupuncture treatment of edema.'GV26(水淸)' and 'CV9(水分)' are very useful acupoints in moxibustion. 5. In the acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of yang edema, we can use acupoints as like 'GV26(水溝)', 'S36(足三里)', 'B20(脾兪)' and 'SP9(陰陵泉)' by purgation and reduction for expelling wind, reducing fever and eliminating dampness. In an instance of yin edema, we can use acupoints as like 'CV9(水分)' 'S36(足三里)', 'CV6(氣海)', 'B20(脾兪)', 'B23(腎兪)' and 'K3(太谿)' by reinforcement for tonifying spleen yang-middle energizer-, qi-transmission and water promoting.

Objectives : The aim of this study is to find the acoustic characteristics of acupuncture therapy effects on post-stroke dysarthria. Methods : Acupuncture therapy was applied for four to six weeks by inserting needles into eight acupuncture points, CV23, CV24, bilateral 'Sheyu' and ipsilateral ST4, ST6 and contralateral LI4, ST36 on facial palsy side. All the speech samples were collected, pre-treatment and post-treatment, using Computerized Speech Lab. VOT and TD of each speech sample and vowel formant(F1&F2) were analyzed on spectrogram. Result : VOT and TD were decreased after treatment. F1 was decreased, and F2 was increased after treatment. Conclusions : This suggests that acupuncture therapy improves symptoms of post-stroke dysarthria by stimulating articulation organs such as tongue, lips, cheeks, larynx and pharynx.
The purpose of this study was to integrate the therapeutic effects of Oriental medicine for stroke in clinical research published in Korea from 1991 to 2000. In the preliminary study, clinical studies on Oriental medical therapy for stroke in Korea were collected. Since it was inadequate to integrate the results of the papers, qualitative meta-analysis was conducted on them. In age distribution of occurrence, the most frequent age was sixties followed by seventies, fifties, forties, and thirties. Sample size was minimum 42 persons, maximum 473 persons. Papers including single therapy were noted in 50.1 %. Among those, herbal medicine was noted in 30%, while acupuncture, physical treatment, and moxibustion was noted in 6.7%. Including more than two therapies were noted in 49.1 %, Among those, herbal medicine was noted in 80%, acupuncture in 20%, physical treatment in 13%, western and oriental medicine in 30%. Papers including control group were noted in 13% and description of scale for the evaluation of treatment effect was 80%. Papers including objectification of scales for the evaluation of therapeutic effects were noted in 26.7% and described follow-up period were noted in 13%. Papers including statistical analysis were noted in 26.7% and calculated p-value was noted in. 13.3%. Papers including design of longitudinal study were noted in 86.7%. Case-control studies were noted in 13.3%. Randomization and blinding were noted in each 0%. These results suggest that followings are required for the improvement of quality of clinical research in Oriental medicine; obvious description of treatment method, objectification of scales for the evaluation of therapeutic effects, adequate research design, randomization and blinding.
