  • Objectives: This study was performed to analyze the interventions of Oriental Medicine which had been commonly used for postpartum disease and postpartum care. Methods: We searched research on the interventions for postpartum disease and postpartum care in 4 domestic search engines. After that, we conducted eligibility screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: 1. We selected total 50 studies. There were 2 randomized controlled trial (RCT), 5 non-RCT, 35 case reports, 8 case series within the 6~8 weeks after childbirth. 2. Of the 35 case reports, several interventions were used : acupuncture (22), moxibustion (11), cupping therapy (7), pharmacopuncture (5), chuna manipulation (4), herbal medicine (34). The most common symptoms were musculoskeletal symptoms (8), followed by postpartum depression (7). Various prescriptions and acupoints of oriental medicine were used depending on the diseases or symptoms. 3. Of the 8 case series, 382 subjects in 5 case series had taken Saenghwa-tang-gagam. And Acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy (5), pharmacopuncture (1) were used as an intervention. 4. The most commonly used acupoint is 腎兪 (BL23) in the pain including postpartum back pain and 三陰交 (SP6), 關元 (CV4) in the postpartum care. 關元 (CV4) is the most commomly used moxibustion point not only the postpartum disease but also the postpartum care. Conclusions: In clinical studies of oriental medicine related to postpartum disease and postpartum care, pain-related clinical studies that belong to or progress to Sanhupung were the most common (30%), and among them, postpartum low back pain studies were the most common (20%). Based on this, we believe that large-scale clinical studies with high quality using oriental interventions including chuna and pharmacopuncture are needed to establish guidelines for the management of pain treatment including postpartum back pain.

  • Objectives: To compare bone proportional cun and finger-breadth cun in the head area to clearly distinguish the anterior hairline. Methods: In this study, the head area was measured for 50 adult males and females in their 20s with normal hair condition. We compared bone proportional cun and finger-breadth cun in the head area and calculated the error by analyzing the difference between the actual location of the anterior hairline and the location measured with the two methods. Results: There was a significant difference between bone proportional cun and finger-breadth cun in the head area. The two methods showed significant difference from the actual location of the anterior hairline. In addition, as a result of calculating the error between the actual location of the anterior hairline and the location measured by the two methods, the finger-breadth cun had fewer errors than the bone proportional cun. Conclusions: The finger-breadth cun is better than the bone proportional cun as an alternative when it is difficult to find the anterior hairline.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to analyze the papers from 2011 to 2020 to study on the trends of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in Korea, Japan and China. Methods : In order to analyze the research trends on IBS in Korea, Japan and China, domestic and foreign databases were selected to provide academic resources to the common use of telecommunication lines represented by the Internet. The latest research trends were determined by limiting the 10-year period from January 2011 to December 2020. Results : In the past decade, six IBS-related papers have been searched in Korea, six in Japan and 458 in China. Although not many studies have been found in Korea and Japan to understand the research trends, there have been many clinical reports, and researchers are more interested in herbal medicine than acupuncture treatment. In China, where many papers were searched, there were more papers related to herbal medicine than acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture treatment was highly interested by researchers in certain acupoints and stimulation methods, and herbal medicine was found to seek diversity in drug prescription and use. Conclusions : In this study, we were able to understand the research trends of Korea, Japan, and China, and provided information that could be useful as a basic data for establishing the direction of Korean medical research on IBS in the future.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of electroacupuncture for treating postpartum hypogalactia. Methods: We searched 9 databases on May, 2022, which contained four English, two Chinese, one Japanese, and two Korean databases. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were eligible. Measurement of outcome included total effective rate, lactation amount, serum prolactin level, and degree of breast fullness. The risk of bias was assessed by two independent authors using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results: 101 trials were screened, 5 RCTs were finally selected. Number of participants per study ranged from 56 to 273. The treatment group was effective of improving total effective rate, lactation amount, serum prolactin level compared with control group, and the result was stastically significant. The quality of the evidence for specific comparisons ranged from low to high. Conclusions: Included studies showed that electroacupuncture on acupoints related to lactation would be effective way to increase milk supply among mothers who are suffering from postpartum hypogalactia. In the future, further high-quality RCTs are needed to prove effectiveness of electroacupuncture for relieving hypogalactia with low risk of bias.

  • We investigated the current status of research using extracorporeal shock waves on the basis of meridian and acupoint theory. By March 2022, five foreign databases (CAJ, Pubmed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library) and six Korean databases (Dbpia, RISS, KMBASE, scienceON, KISS, NDSL) were searched with the terms using 'Extracorporeal shock wave' and '(Acupoint or Acupuncture point)'. The search terms were adapted according to the language of the database. There were no restrictions on the study design. As a result of the search, twenty-seven papers were selected for analysis. One study was searched in English database, and the remaining twenty-six studies were searched in Chinese database. There were nineteen pain-related diseases, four obsterics and gynecology diseases, two bone-related diseases, and two other diseases. The most frequently used acupoints were GB34, ST36, and KI3. A total of six adverse events were reported in five papers. The use of extracorporeal shock wave on the basis of meridian and acupoint theory is considered to have sufficient meaning in Korean Medicine. It is expected to use extracorporeal shock wave as a new treatment method for Korean Medicine doctors in the near future.

  • Objectives : An error was found in the recent standard by the World Health Organization (WHO) on the locations of the Upper arm Route of Lung Meridian (URLM) and its acupoints LU3 and LU4. This possible incorrect information is being taught throughout Korean medicine colleges nationwide, which follow WHO standards. Therefore, an investigation is required to sort out this discrepancy based on the evidence in historical documents. Methods : The location of WHO's URLM and LU3 and LU4 were compared with corresponding information in the classical literature. The anatomical structure mentioned in these classical documents was examined. Finally, an assessment was conducted on whether this structure is reflected in the WHO standards. Results : Classical literature prior to the early 20th century records the locations of the Lung Meridian and LU3 and LU4 of the upper arm to be in the artery on the medial aspect. This artery corresponds to the brachial artery. The location established by the WHO is on the anterolateral side of the upper arm, where no large arteries exist that can be found by haptic search or angiographically. The anterolateral side of the upper arm belongs to the Yang aspect, which does not coincide with the Yin aspect of Lung Meridian. Conclusions : The WHO's URLM and LU3-4 standards do not agree with the classical literature. The correct route must coincide with the brachial artery passing through the medial side of the humerus. The actual location of LU3-4 is on the medial aspect of the arm, just medial to the border of the biceps brachii muscle, on the brachial artery, 3-4 B-cun inferior to the anterior axillary fold.
