Groundwater development and use have been increasing in Korea causing frequent occurrences of related hazards such as groundwater level decline, land subsidence, and groundwater contamination. To tackle these groundwater problems, central and local governments have set-up and maintained many groundwater monitoring programs such as the National Groundwater Monitoring Network and the Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network, which collect very valuable data on the overall status of domestic groundwater to aid proper groundwater management. However, several problems mainly related to the remediation of contaminated groundwater remain unresolved. Recently, there have been some incidents related to the contamination of groundwater, and these have drawn the concern of the Korean people. Although groundwater contamination has been investigated in detail, actual groundwater remediation work has not yet been implemented. The remediation of the contaminated groundwater must begin immediately in order to sustain the eco-system service of clean groundwater and enhance the welfare of the Korean people.

This study proposes an analysis model that can reflect the actual behavior of the rail floating track, and the most reasonable model was analyzed through field measurement and numerical analysis. It was analyzed that the current design theory analysis results of rail floating tracks were different from the field measurement results and were not suitable to reflect the actual behavior. In the rail floating track, it was analyzed that the subsidence of the point directly affects the total displacement rather than the displacement due to the bending of the rail. As a result of numerical analysis, it was analyzed that the analysis result of the proposed model, which is a parallel arrangement spring model that does not have a support point directly below the rail, reflects the actual behavior. The analysis model presented in this study can be used to predict track behavior when designing and maintaining rail floating tracks in the future.
Purpose: In this study, field experimental research was conducted to analyze the settlement characteristics of soft ground in the central inland region of Korea and use it in practice. Method: The design predicted values and comparative analysis were performed using the ten settlement measurement data actually measured in the field experiment. For the design prediction value, Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation settlement analysis was used. In the experiment, the surface subsidence plate was used for field measurement. Result: The settlement behavior of the predicted value and the actual value was generally similar, but in the settlement value, the actual settlement value showed a settlement behavior of 30% or less compared to the predicted settlement value. The rate of consolidation settlement in this study area was in the range of 9.6% to 27.0%, and the average value was 18.21%. It is analyzed that the prediction of the settlement amount of the silty soils distributed in the inland plains of the central region of Korea can be relatively overestimated. Conclusion: It is judged that precise ground investigation and detailed prediction are necessary because there is a possibility of over-design in the design for predicting the amount of settlement of the silty soils distributed in the inland plains of the central region of Korea.

Wavelet approach is regarded as a useful methodology for geo-environment analysis with respect to spatial objects with periodicity and spatial pattern, compared to autocorrelation analysis, Fourier analysis, variogram analysis and so on. However, there are a few case studies for geo-lineament characterization with the actual geo-based information such as remotely sensed imagery and DEM. In this study, wavelet approach in the Uiseung caldera region are carried out to delineate characterization for geolineament spatial pattern. There are high possibilities of the development of radial lineaments from the centre of round crater due to the eruption of a volcano and the subsidence of a crater. We have grasped the directionality of the whole linear structures of the caldera via rose diagram, and then performed wavelet analysis on the profiles of orthogonal directions for main directions of the lineaments. The result of this study is likely to be used as a fundamental data in order to grasp the outline of caldera structure prior to the close estimation

This study measured the change of media properties using Time domain Reflectometry (TDR) and Tensionmeter (TM) to measure volumetric water content of soil affecting in land subsidence and pollutant diffusion under saturation/unsaturated condition by water-level fluctuations. Also, actual water content compared their changes aspect by dry oven test for quantitative determinations of these measured values. In the case of TM, initial unsaturated condition confirmed that range in dimension of each other different according to their establishment depth, but measured values of TM can know that is shown measured value in almost similar measuring range under drain condition after the first injection. Also, the results of TDR showed that can measure enough change of volumetric water content in saturation/unsaturated condition by water-level fluctuations. Therefore, we are judged that TDR measurement equipment is very effective to measure the variations of volumetric water content and water-level being caused in groundwater level fluctuations.

In this paper, a risk management system applicable to NATM tunneling projects is proposed. After investigating case histories in NATM tunnel collapse, this paper analyzes the potential risk factors and their corresponding risk events during NATM tunnel construction. The risk factors are categorized into three groups: geological, design and construction risk factors. The risk events are also categorized into four types: excessive deformation, excessive deformation with subsidence, collapse inside tunnels, and collapse inside tunnels with subsidence. The paper identifies risk scenarios in consideration of the risk factors and proposes a risk analysis/evaluation method for the NATM tunnel risk scenarios. Based on the evaluation results, the optimal mitigation measure to handle the risk events is suggested. In order to effectively facilitate a series of risk management processes, it is necessary to develop a risk register and a management ledger for risk mitigation measures that are customized to NATM tunnels. Lastly, the risk management for an actual NATM tunnel construction site is performed to verify the validity of the proposed system.
Purpose: Ground subsidence due to cavity can bring about various problems, such as casualties, decrease of the safety of the structures, and indirect social costs. Therefore, ground subsidence should be prevented through the exploration and recovery of the cavity under the pavements. Method: In this study, GPR exploration method was carried out on both actual roadway and mock-up site to compensate for the problems caused by excavation and restoration process. Result: This study compared the cavity scales obtained from GPR exploration results and the direct excavation of the identified cavity. It was confirmed that the predicted soil depth by GPR exploration was similar to the identified soil depth, but the predicted cavity scale by GPR exploration overestimated the longitudinal and cross-sectional widths compared to the identified cavity scale. Conclusion: Based on the correlation between the predicted cavity scales by GPR exploration, it is possible to qualitatively estimate the cavity scales using the empirical formula proposed in this study.

In this paper, the physical properties, stress deformation and strength characteristics, density and permeability characteristics of silty sand (SM) by fines content were analyzed through indoor tests. also based on the results of the indoor tests, a compact analysis was performed according to the content of SM, and the applicability of SM ground to the compacted target layer was evaluated by comparing it with the measurement data of the actual problem site. As a result of indoor tests and compression analysis, SM changed its mechanical properties from sandy soil to viscous soil when the fine particle content was 35% or higher, and using field measurement data, SM was found to have a higher compression tendency than direct subsidence. Therefore, the mechanical characteristics of SM above Fc 35% are considered to be similar to that of viscous soil, which is different from the compression characteristics of the tendency of immediate subsidence to conventional sandy soil, so it is necessary to present the mechanical characteristics of SM through further research. The research findings highlight the importance of considering consolidation settlement in silty sand (SM) when evaluating soft soil conditions. These findings can aid in revising criteria for assessing weak ground conditions by providing essential engineering property data based on varying fines content in silty sand.
Blind hydraulic backfilling is a commonly used technique for subsidence control of the strata over unapproachable waterlogged underground excavations. In this investigation model studies on all the three variants of this technique, namely, hydro-pneumatic or air-assisted gravity backfilling, pumped-slurry backfilling and simple gravity backfilling, have been carried out in fully transparent models of the underground excavations. On examination of the filling process, it was revealed that in all the three cases, the basic process of filling occurs by sand transport along one or more meandering channels. The relative influence of sand, water and air flow rates on the area of filling from a single inlet point and the hydraulic pressure loss per unit length were studied in details. In hydro-pneumatic backfilling process, the air bubbles while moving upward through the meandering channels provide an additional buoyant force over and above the available hydraulic head. In this way the area of filling from a single borehole may be quite large even at small flow rates of water. During actual field implementation the injected air, if not released completely from the rise side holes, may cause troubles by way of creating potholes on the surface. The pumped-slurry technique has shown its capability of filling a relatively larger area at faster rate, especially when high-volume, low-pressure method was selected. But simple gravity filling was also found to be equally effective method as slurry pumping, especially when flow rates were high. In the second and third method discussed above, examination of variations of injection pressure was also done and its relation with physical phenomenon was also attempted. Some empirical relationships were also developed using multivariate regression with a view to help the practicing engineers.
This research was started in order to recognize the necessity of systematic and scientific approach to sinkholes, and to imply from an empirical point of view that a detailed evaluation method and measure for technique should be devised. As the result drew the risk factors that cause sinkholes by reflecting the opinions of water resources and ground experts, this research is expected to contribute to the development of a more systematic and pre-preventive evaluation index by preparing a countermeasure against sinkholes. In the future, it is necessary to develop an evaluation index toward the risk factors of sinkholes, in order to establish a scientific basis and objectivity that can determine priority, by subdividing the decision-making process that is required for preparing a countermeasure against sinkholes. In addition, a detailed methodology and related technique to measure each evaluation index should be continued to be discussed, in order to review the applicability of evaluation indices on actual sites.
