Corporate Social Responsibility -Contents Analysis of Korean Fashion Corporations Websites- (국내 패션기업의 CSR 활동 -기업 웹사이트를 중심으로-)

  • This study explores the CSR activities of Korean fashion corporations. A contents analysis of corporate websites was carried out to investigate the structure and function of their websites and the activity dimensions related to the CSR of Korean fashion corporations. The subjects were the Korean top 100 fashion corporations according to total sales in 2009. The findings throughout the research are as follow. First, a total of 46 corporations created the contents about CSR activities on their websites. A total of 32 of them communicated their CSR activities on the main menu at the intro page of the website. Second, the CSR activities of Korean fashion corporate were classified the 3P dimensions, profit (economic responsibilities), planet (environmental responsibility), and people (social responsibility). We found a total of 228 CSR issues for Korean fashion corporations. The issues included in the people dimension were 71.0%, planet issues 16.7%, and profit issues 12.3%. The most significant issue was the economic support responsibility to social organizations included in the people dimension.

A Study on Meta-Level Learning through Modeling Activities (모델링 활동을 통한 메타수준 학습에 대한 연구)

  • There have been many discussions of teaching and learning mathematics through modeling activities in mathematics education research community. Although there has been some agreement regarding modeling activity as an alternative way to support mathematics teaching and learning, there is still no clear consensus on these issues. This paper reports a case study which aims to identify ways to design modeling tasks and instruction to foster meta-level learning, and investigate how modeling activities can facilitate meta-level learning. From the results of teaching experiment, this study examines the potential of modeling activities in mathematics teaching and learning.

The Anticoagulant and Anticancer Activities of Enteromorpha intestinalis Extracts (파래 추출물의 항응고 활성과 항암 활성에 관한 연구)

  • The study was performed to investigate the biological activity of Enteromorpha intestinalis. In order to examine its blood anti-coagulant effects, Enteromorpha intestinalis was extracted with cold water, methanol, hot water, HCl and NaOH. In general, the alkali extract of Enteromorpha intestinalis was approximately 17 times stronger than the control. The anti-cancer effects of select extracts(methanol, hot water, 0.1 N NaOH, 1 N NaOH) were determined in human melanoma cells(Bl6/F10), fibrosarcoma cells(HTl080) and breast cancer cells(MCF7) by MTT assay. With the treatment of 250 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of methanol extracts. HT1080, B16/F10 and MCF7 cell viabilities significantly decreased to 8.06%, 3.62% and 10.10%, respectively. Thus these results strongly support the possibie use of Enteromorpha intestinalis as a functional materials.

A Study on Estimation of Air Pollutants Emission from Traditional Fireplace in Korea (아궁이 사용에 의한 대기오염물질 배출량 산정에 관한 연구)

  • A traditional fireplace has been used, but not much, for heating and cooking in rural area, Korea. Traditional fireplace as one type of biomass burnings is also emitting various air pollutants. Air pollutants emission from traditional fireplace was estimated in this study. There are two types of traditional fireplace, one for combined heating and cooking, the other one for cooking only. Types of fuels mostly used in traditional fireplace were wood, agricultural residue, solid waste. Activity levels such as fuel types, amount of fuel loading, and temporal variation were investigated by field survey over Korea. Estimated annual emissions from traditional fireplace were CO 6,335.0, NOx 555.0, SOx 9.6, VOC 1,771.7, TSP 181.4, $PM_{10}$ 119.9, $PM_{2.5}$ 96.2, $NH_3$ 1.4 ton/yr respectively. When emissions compared with the national emission inventory (CAPSS: Clean Air Policy Support System) of 2010 year, CO and $PM_{10}$ occupy 0.8% and 0.1% of total national emission, respectively.

  • Within the paper, an overview of organic farming in Europe countries is given and the Principle and skills of organic agriculture is shortly reported with special regard to Germany. The overview information on European organic farming is covered such as (1)development of organic farming, (2) organic farming organizations, (3)standards and certification, (4)implementation of EU council regulation, (5)state support, (6)implementation of Agenda 2000, (7)training and education, (8)advisory service and research situation. In the paper the principle and skills for organic farming which are practiced actually in the German organic farms is also reported. How to maintain and increase the fertility and microbiological activity of the soil by (1)cultivation of legumes, green manures or deep-rooting crops in multi-annual rotation system, (2)incorporation in the soil organic material, by-products from livestock farming is one of the major principle to organic crop production. Pest and diseases and weeds are controlled by any one, or a combination of the following measure; (1) choice of appropriate species and varieties, (2)appropriate rotation programs, (3)mechanical cultivation, (4)protection of natural enemies of pests through provision of favourable habitat and ecological buffer zone, (5)diversified ecosystems, (6)flame weeding, (7)natural enemies, (8)bio-dynamic preparations, (9)mulching and mowing, (10)grazing of animals, (11)mechanical controls, (12)steam sterilization.

  • Biochips are a powerful emerging technology for biomedical, environmental applications. Especially, making use of bioseonors in the evaluation of toxicity becomes increasingly important. For biosensor as a toxicity detection, biomolecules like antibodies or aptamers have been developed to specifically capture the toxic target molecules. In addition, the development of optimal chip materials capable of maintaining the activity of embedded biomolecules such as proteins or aptamers has proven challenging. Here, using sol-gel materials, new chip material, whose ability for immobilizing the embedded aptamers and maintaining the ability of embedded aptamers is optimal, was searched. We used sol-gel formulation screening methods previously developed and found the best formulation which shows high sensitive and specific interactions of aptamers. This study results will support the technological advancement for diagnosis and environmental sensor.

Association of Dietary Factors with Cognitive Impairment in Older Women (여성 노인의 식이요인과 인지기능 감퇴의 관련성)

  • Objective : To examine the association between dietary factors and cognitive impairment in older Korean women living in the community. Methods : Wave 2 data, from the Suwon Longitudinal Aging Study (SLAS), of 365 women aged 65 years or over, were used. The Korean version of the 30-point Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K) was used to assess cognitive impairment (score$\geq$19). Dietary habits and frequencies of food group consumption were also examined. Results : A total of 67 women (18.4%) were found to be cognitively impaired. In bivariate analyses, nondietary factors, such as age, marital status, education, income, self-rated health, depression, emotional support, social activity, exercise, and dietary factors, such as self-rated nutritional status, frequency of beans and bean products and milk and dairy products consumption were associated with cognitive impairment. In the multivariate analysis, a higher frequency ($\geq$1 vs. <1 time/day) of beans and bean products (OR=0.48, 95% CI: 0.23-0.99) and milk and dairy products (OR=0.25, 95% CI: 0.10-0.61) consumption was inversely associated with cognitive impairment, after adjustment for non-dietary factors. Conclusion : These results suggest that dietary factors may play a significant role in cognitive impairment of older Korean women.

Thermal Stability of $MnOx-WO_3-TiO_2$ Catalysts Prepared by the Sol-gel Method for Low-temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction

  • The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by $NH_3$ is well known as one of the most convenient, efficient, and economical method to prevent NOx emission in flue gas from stationary sources. The degradation of the reactivity is the obstacle for its real application, since high concentrations of sulfur dioxide and thermal factor would deactivate the catalyst. It is necessary to develop high stability of catalysts for low-temperature SCR. Among the transition metal oxides, $WO_3$ is known to exhibit high SCR activity and good thermal stability. The $MnOx-WO_3-TiO_2$ catalysts prepared by sol-gel method with various $WO_3$ contents were investigated for low-temperature SCR. These catalysts were observed in terms of micro-structure and spectroscopy analyses. The $WO_3$ catalyst as a promoter is used to enhance the thermal stability of catalyst since it increases the phase transition temperature of $TiO_2$ support. It was found that the addition of tungsten oxides not only maintained the temperature window of NO conversion but also increased the acid sites of catalyst.

Alcohol and Liver disease (알코올과 간질환)

  • Alcoholic liver disease is defined by the development of three types of liver damage following chronic heavy alcohol consumption, namely, alcoholic fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and alcoholic cirrhosis, The clinical features and laboratory tests often do not distinguish among these types of liver injuries. In addition, a considerable number of the patients who have clinical and laboratory features compatible with alcoholic liver disease are diagnosed on liver biopsy to have chronic viral hepatitis or other lesion. Because of these factors, liver biopsy is frequently needed to arrive a definite diagnosis of the disease, its activity, and its chronicity. Fatty liver is usually a benign and reverible condition that disappears on abstinence from alcohol. However, alcoholic hepatitis is usually regarded as a precursor of cirrhosis. The principle factors in the development of alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis are the quantity and length of ingestion of alcohol. women are much more susceptible than men to hepatic injuries. Since only 10 - 20% of alcoholics develop cirrhosis, however, it is conceivable that other factors, either genetic, environmental, or nutritional may contribute in the genesis of liver injuries. The most important factor in the treatment of alcoholic liver disease is prolonzed abstinence from alcohol, since abstinence by itself improves clinical status and survival, Nutritional support in patients with nutritional deficiency, and specific drug therapies such as corticosteroid or anabolic steroids for hospitaliged patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis also play an important role in devreasing morbidity and improving survival. Liver transplantation is a newer treatment modality in the patients with advanced cirrhosis, not responsible to medical treatment.

Infants' Temperament and Health Problems according to Maternal Postpartum Depression (산모의 산후우울 여부에 따른 영아의 기질과 건강문제)

  • Purpose: Mothers' postpartum depression is a worldwide health concern that produces compromising effects on their infants. This study was conducted to compare the infants' temperament and health problems according to the presence of maternal postpartum depression. Methods: Data were collected from May to October in 2009. The sample was 137 mothers at one month postpartum. The Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to assess depressive symptoms. Results: At one month postpartum, 22.6% of mothers were classified as having postpartum depression. Infants of depressed mothers were more frequently classified as difficult temperament infants. They showed lower scores on the amenability, rhythmicity and persistency and higher scores on activity in temperament. Also, infants of depressed mothers reported more infant health problems at one months. Maternal depression showed significant negative correlations with family functioning, social support and marital satisfaction. Conclusion: Study findings show that postpartum maternal depression is associated with infants' temperament and health, and thus screening and early interventions for postpartum depression would promote the health of both the mother and infant.
