In the ubiquitous health monitoring environments, it is quite important not only to evaluate the physiological health condition but also mental stress condition. In order to achieve this goal, a heart activity monitoring system utilizing a wearable bipolar electrode is devised and the heart rate variability(HRV) is extracted and interpreted in both frequency and time feature domains. Consequently, to evaluate the emotional stress condition of the subjects, a stress-induced experimental protocol was applied to healthy subjects and the time and frequency features of heart activity were analyzed in terms of the ratio of low frequency components v.s., high frequency components and the relevant the moving average distributions compromising the successive RR peaks intervals in the ambulatory ECG measurement system.

On-line partial discharge(PD) monitoring system has been developed to monitor in operating large motor stator insulations. This system makes use of remote diagnosis techniques for the evaluation of PD activity in the control center of thermal power plant. This system can be remotely accessed via a modem to build database, analyze status and interpret the pattern of PD activity. A personnel computer is generally connected to ten motors to continuous measurement of the PD activity. The test data can be easily interpreted by a maintenance staff. For assessing the condition of stator winding in motors, this system ensures a reliable measurement and accurate estimation. Capacitive couplers used for on-line PD measurement have been 80pF. The maximum PD magnitude(Qmax), PD pattern and normalized quantity number(NQN) were performed by this system.
This work develops a monitoring system for the population with health concerns. A belt integrated with an on-body circuit and sensors measures a wearer's selected vital signals. The electrocardiogram sensors monitor heart conditions and an accelerometer assesses the level of physical activity. Sensed signals are transmitted to the circuit module through digital yarns and are forwarded to a mobile device via Bluetooth. An interactive application, installed on the mobile device, is used to process the received signals and provide users with real-time feedback about their status. Persuasive functions are designed and implemented in the interactive application to encourage users' physical activity. Two signal processing algorithms are developed to analyze the data regarding heart and activity. A user study is conducted to evaluate the performance and usability of the developed system.
Flow injection analysis technique for monitoring of xylitol concentrations in biological processes has been developed using xylitol oxidase (XYO) immobilized on VA-Epoxy Biosynth carrier. The immobilized XYO cartridge has been integrated into a FIA system with an oxygen electrode and systematically investigated with regards to the factors which can affect the activity of the immobilized XYO, such as pH, temperature, salt concentration etc. The activity of the immobilized XYO increased with the temperature ($19.0 - 29.0^{circ}C$) and sample injection volume ($75-250\muL$) and molarity of potassium phosphate buffer (0.1-1 M), but it reached the highest value at pH 8.5. The XYO-FIA system has been also applied for on-line monitoring of xylitol concentrations in a reactor and showed good operational stability and agreement with off-line data measured with HPLC.
Background: Traditional wildlife monitoring has often relied on invasive techniques posing risks to species and demanding substantial resources. To address this, camera traps emerged as non-invasive alternatives, albeit primarily tailored for larger mammals, posing limitations for small mammal research. Thus, the Mostela, an innovative tool designed to overcome these challenges, was introduced to monitor small mammals in South Korea. Results: The Mostela was deployed at two study sites in South Korea, yielding compelling evidence of its efficiency in capturing small mammal species. By analyzing the collected data, we calculated the relative abundance of each species and elucidated their activity patterns. Conclusions: In summary, the Mostela system demonstrates substantial potential for advancing small mammal monitoring, offering valuable insights into diversity, community dynamics, activity patterns, and habitat preferences. Its application extends to the detection of endangered and rare species, further contributing to wildlife conservation efforts in South Korea. Consequently, the Mostela system stands as a valuable addition to the toolkit of conservationists and researchers, fostering ethical and non-invasive research practices while advancing our understanding of small mammal populations and ecosystems.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the validity of a depth camera-based system for monitoring physical function, assessing its feasibility for accurately monitoring activities of daily living. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty-three participants were enlisted to perform fifteen activities of daily living within a living laboratory designed to simulate a home environment. Activities were monitored using a depth camera system capable of classifying actions into standing, sitting, and lying down, with a conventional video camera employed for activity recording. The duration of each activity, as measured by the system, was compared to direct observations made by a physical therapist which were analyzed using a motion analysis software. The association between these two measurement approaches was assessed through correlation analysis, coefficient of determination, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Bland-Altman plots. Results: Our findings indicated that standing activities exhibited the highest correlation (r=0.847) between the system measurements and physical therapist observations, followed by sitting (r=0.817) and lying down (r=0.734), which demonstrated lower correlations. However, the ICC and Bland-Altman plots revealed notable variances between the two measurement methods, particularly for activities involving lying down. Conclusions: In this study, the depth camera-based physical monitoring system showed promise feasibility in distinguishing standing, sitting, and lying down activities at home environments. However, the current study also underlined some necessities of enhancements in capturing lying down activities.

The design and implementation of a personal navigation system including activity monitoring function is given in this paper. The system consists of a 3 dimensional MEMS accelerometer, digital compasses and ZigBee communication. An accelerometer and digital compasses are used to compute the position and activity. The obtained position and activity information is transmitted to a fixed beacon via ZigBee. At the same time, activity information is stored in the personal navigation system to a batch analysis program. The step detection algorithm which is robust to attaching location is proposed. Also two digital compass error compensation algorithms are proposed to find more precise headings. The experiments with a real system show that the activities of users and continuous locations less than 1.5m errors are obtained after 80m walking.

Recent improvements on the quality, fidelity and availability of biometric data have led to effective human physical activity detection (HPAD) in real time which adds significant value to applications such as human behavior identification, healthcare monitoring, and user authentication. Current approaches usually use machine-learning techniques for human physical activity recognition based on the data collected from wearable accelerometer sensor from a single wearable smart device on the user. However, collecting data from a single wearable smart device may not provide the complete user activity data as it is usually attached to only single part of the user's body. In addition, in case of the absence of the single sensor, then no data can be collected. Hence, in this paper, a continuous HPAD will be presented to effectively perform user activity detection with mobile service infrastructure using multiple wearable smart devices, namely smartphone and smartwatch placed in various locations on user's body for more accurate HPAD. A case study on a comprehensive dataset of classified human physical activities with our HAPD approach shows substantial improvement in HPAD accuracy.
D. W. KANG, J. S. CHOI, and G. R. TACK, A Study on Real-Time Sports Activity Classification & Monitoring Using a Tri-axial Accelerometer. Korean Jouranl of Sport Biomechanics, Vol. 18, No. 2, pp. 59-64, 2008. This study was conducted to study the real-time sports activity classification and monitoring using single waist mounted tri-axial accelerometer. This monitoring system detects events of sports activities such as walking, running, cycling, transitions between movements, resting and emergency event of falls. Accelerometer module was developed small and easily attachable on waist using wireless communication system which does not constrain sports activities. The sensor signal was transferred to PC and each movement pattern was classified using the developed algorithm in real-time environment. To evaluate proposed algorithm, experiment was performed with several sports activities such as walking, running, cycling movement for 100sec each and falls, transition movements(sit to stand, lie to stand, stand to sit, lie to sit, stand to lie and sit to lie) for 20 times each with 5 healthy subjects. The results showed that successful detection rate of the system for all activities was 95.4%. In this study, through sports activity monitoring. it was possible to classify accurate sports activities and to notify emergency event such as falls. For further study, the accurate energy consumption algorithm for each sports activity is under development.
This paper provides an overview on development of long-span bridges monitoring in Japan, with emphasis on monitoring strategies, types of monitoring system, and effective utilization of monitoring data. Because of severe environment condition such as high seismic activity and strong wind, bridge monitoring systems in Japan historically put more emphasis on structural evaluation against extreme events. Monitoring data were used to verify design assumptions, update specifications, and facilitate the efficacy of vibration control system. These were among the first objectives of instrumentation of long-span bridges in a framework of monitoring system in Japan. Later, monitoring systems were also utilized to evaluate structural performance under various environment and loading conditions, and to detect the possible structural deterioration over the age of structures. Monitoring systems are also employed as the basis of investigation and decision making for structural repair and/or retrofit when required. More recent interest has been to further extend application of monitoring to facilitate operation and maintenance, through rationalization of risk and asset management by utilizing monitoring data. The paper describes strategies and several examples of monitoring system and lessons learned from structural monitoring of long-span bridges in Japan.
