Gas hydrates are ice-like compounds that form at the low temperature and high pressure conditions common in shallow marine sediments at water depths greater than 300-500 m when concentrations of methane and other hydrocarbon gases exceed saturation. Estimates of the total mass of methane carbon that resides in this reservoir vary widely. While there is general agreement that gas hydrate is a significant component of the global near-surface carbon budget, there is considerable controversy about whether it has the potential to be a major source of fossil fuel in the future and whether periods of global climate change in the past can be attributed to destabilization of this reservoir. Also essentially unknown is the interaction between gas hydrate and the subsurface biosphere. ODP Leg 204 was designed to address these questions by determining the distribution, amount and rate of formation of gas hydrate within an accretionary ridge and adjacent basin and the sources of gas for forming hydrate. Additional objectives included identification of geologic proxies for past gas hydrate occurrence and calibration of remote sensing techniques to quantify the in situ amount of gas hydrate that can be used to improve estimates where no boreholes exist. Leg 204 also provided an opportunity to test several new techniques for sampling, preserving and measuring gas hydrates. During ODP Leg 204, nine sites were drilled and cored on southern Hydrate Ridge, a topographic high in the accretionary complex of the Cascadia subduction zone, located approximately 80km west of Newport, Oregon. Previous studies of southern Hydrate Ridge had documented the presence of seafloor gas vents, outcrops of massive gas hydrate, and a pinnacle' of authigenic carbonate near the summit. Deep-towed sidescan data show an approximately $300\times500m$ area of relatively high acoustic backscatter that indicates the extent of seafloor venting. Elsewhere on southern Hydrate Ridge, the seafloor is covered with low reflectivity sediment, but the presence of a regional bottom-simulating seismic reflection (BSR) suggests that gas hydrate is widespread. The sites that were drilled and cored during ODP Leg 204 can be grouped into three end-member environments basedon the seismic data. Sites 1244 through 1247 characterize the flanks of southern Hydrate Ridge. Sites 1248-1250 characterize the summit in the region of active seafloor venting. Sites 1251 and 1252 characterize the slope basin east of Hydrate Ridge, which is a region of rapid sedimentation, in contrast to the erosional environment of Hydrate Ridge. Site 1252 was located on the flank of a secondary anticline and is the only site where no BSR is observed.

In this paper, we design the CORBA-based Mobile Agent Model (CMAM) which has the capability of the efficient work processing in distributed environment through sensing network traffic and searching the optimal path for migration nodes of mobile agent. In case existing mobile agent model is given various works from user, the network overhead and traffic are increased by increasing of execution module size. Also, if it happens a large quantity of traffics due to migration of nodes according to appointment of the passive host(below node) routing schedule by user, it needs much cost for node search time by traffic. Therefore, in this paper, we design a new mobile agent m()del that assures the reliability of agent's migration through dynamic act on the specific situation according to appointment of the active routing schedule and can minimize agent's work processing time through optimal path search. The proposed model assigns routing schedule of the migration nodes actively using an extended MAFFinder. Also, for decreasing overhead of network by agent's size, it separates the existing mobile agent object by mobile agent including only agent calling module and push agent with work executing module based on distributed object type of CORBA. Also, it reduces the required time for round works of mobile agent through the optimal path search of migration nodes.

Internet-of-Things(IoT) is the computing environment to provide valuable services by interacting with multiple devices, where diverse devices are connected within the existing Internet infrastructure and acquire context information by sensing. As the concern of IoT has been increased recently, most of the industries develop many IoT devices. And, many people are focused on the IoT application that is utilizing different technologies, which are sensor network, communication technologies, and software engineering. Developing on-ground IoT application is especially even more active in progress depending on increasing of on-ground IoT devices because it is possible for them to access dangerous and inaccessible situation. However, There are a few studies related IoT. Moreover, since on-ground IoT application, which is different from typical software application, has to consider device's characteristics, communication, and surround condition, it reveal challenges, decreasing reliability. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze reliability challenges related to maturity and fault tolerance, one of reliability attributes, occurring in developing on-ground IoT applications and suggest the effective solutions to resolve the challenges. To verify proposed the challenges and solutions, we show result that is applying the solutions to applications. By presenting the case study, we evaluate the effectiveness of applying the solutions to the application.

The dissemination of commercial satellite images. which have the high spatial resolution such as aerial photos, are the active trend in remote sensing community because of the recent development in satellite and sensor technology. Such high resolution satellite images provide a unique tool for the monitoring of ongoing urban land use change. Especially KOMPSAT-1, which was launched at December 1999 and successfully operated up to now, provides repeatedly panchromatic images over Korean peninsula, which has the spatial resolution of 6.6m. Based upon this KOMPSAT-1 EOC image data we can try to analyze and assess the temporal urban land use change, which could not be done because lack of such data. The aim of this paper is to analyze and assess the spatial land use characteristics of Daejeon Metropolitan City based on KOMPSAT-1 EOC data. The land use map of year 2001 is generated through the modification of the year 2000 land use map, which is published by National Geographic Information Institute, using visual interpretation of KOMPSAT-1 EOC image which is acquired in year 2001. This study can be the start point of the time series analysis of the long term land use change monitoring mit KOMPSAT-1 EOC data.

The IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function(DCF) protocol provides a contention-based distribution channel access mechanism for stations to share the wireless medium. However, the performance of the DCF drops dramatically in terms of throughput, delay and delay jitter as the number of active stations becomes large. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective scheme, called DCF/VG(Distributed Coordination Function with Virtual Group), for improving the performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF mechanism. In this scheme, each station independently decides the virtual group cycle using the information provided by the carrier sensing mechanism. The virtual group cycle consists of one or more virtual groups and a virtual group includes an idle period and a busy period. Each station operates in only one out of several virtual groups of the virtual group cycle and does not operate in the others. In other words, each station decreases its backoff counter and tries to transmit a packet only in its virtual group like the IEEE 802.11 DCF. Performance of the proposed scheme is investigated by numerical analysis and simulation. Numerical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme is very effective and has high throughput and low delay and jitter under a wide range of contention level.
The basement rock of upper stream of Keum River Valley consists of Precambrian gneiss which is resistant to weathering. That of mid and lower stream valley, however, is mainly composed of Mesozoic granites which are vulnerable to weathering. The upstream part of Geum River Basin is typified by the deeply-incised and steep meandering streams, whereas mid and lower part is characterized by wide floodplain and gently dipping river bottom toward the Yellow Sea. In particular flooding deposits, in which are imprinted a number of repetitions of erosion and sedimentation during the Holocene, are widely distributed in the lower stream of Geum River Basin. For understanding of erosions in the mid and lower stream of Geum River Basin, the rate of erosion of each small basins were estimated by using the data of field survey, erosional experiments and GIS ananlysis. It was revealed that erosion rate appeared highest in granite areas, and overall areas, in this field survey were represented by relatively high erosion rates. By implemeatation of remote sensing and imagery data, the temporal changes of river bed sediments for about last 11 years were successfully monitored. Observed as an important phenomenon is that the river bed has been risen since 1994 when an embankment (Dyke) was constructed in the estuarine river mouth. From the results derived from the detailed river bed topographical map made in this investigation, the sedimentation of the lower river basin is considered to be deposited with about 5 cm/year for the last 11 years. Based on this river bed profile analysis by HEC-6 module, it is predicted that Geum River bed of Ganggyeong area is continuously rising up in general until 2004. Although extraction of a large amount of aggregates from Gongju to Ganggyung areas, the Ganggyung lower stream shows the distinct sedimentation. Therefore, it is interpreted that the active erosions of tributary basins Geum drainage basins can affect general river bed rising changes of Geum River.
To improve the performance of MEMS devices, fabricating single-crystalline silicon HARS (high aspect ratio structure) with thicknesses of up to several tens of micrometers has been an active research topic in recent years. However, achieving electrical isolation, which is required for actuating a structure or sensing an electrical signal, has been one of the main problems in single-crystalline silicon HARS fabrication technologies. In this paper, new isolation technologies using high aspect ratio oxide beams and sidewalls are developed to achieve electrical isolation between electrodes of single-crystalline silicon HARS. The developed isolation technologies use insulating oxide structural supports from either the structural sides or from the bottom. In this case because the trench oxide supports have a depth of several tens of ${\mu}m$, the effects of residual stress must be considered. In this paper, insulating supports are fabricated using PECVD TEOS films, the residual stress of the insulating supports is measured, and the effect of the residual stress on the structure is analyzed. It is shown using microresonators, that the developed isolation technologies can be effectively used for HARS using single-crystalline silicon.

In order to provide a realtime transmission over a wireless LAM, we here present a new jamming based retransmission mechanism. In a legacy wireless LAN system, all stations use the binary exponential backoff algorithm to avoid collisions among frames. It is well known that the backoff algorithm causes more collisions as the numbers of active stations increases. This makes transmission of real time traffic hard. In the proposed scheme, when each station senses collisions, it promptly allows to send a jamming signal during a unique jamming window period which is determined by its own channel access count database(CACDB). This jamming windows is chosen not to be overlapped each other by using of CACDB, and thus channel access of another station is prevented. Hereafter the station gets the ownership of the medium when the wireless medium becomes idle after sending the jamming signal and sensing carrier, and then sends frame in medium. In our proposal, repeating collisions is never happened. We here assume that real time traffic use a frame of fixed length in order to make the time for receiving its ACK frame same. Comparing the proposed jamming-based retransmission scheme with the the 802.11 and 802.11e MAC by simulation. one can find that the proposed scheme have advantages in terms of delay, average backoff time, and average number of collisions per frame. One can find that the proposed scheme might be practically applicable to several applications of realtime traffic transmission in wireless LAN systems.
A fiber-optic magnetic sensor system for the detection of small ac magnetic field(200Hz-2 kHz) was constructed. Magnetic field sensing part was fabricated by bonding a section of optical fiber to amorphous metallic glass(2605SC) having large magnetostriction effect. And with the directional coupler, all fiber type Mach-Zehnder interferometer was constructed to measure the variation of the external magnetic field by translating it into the optical phase shift in the interferometer. The signal fading problem of the interferometer, which is due to random phase drifts originated from the environment, i.e., temperature fluctuation, vibrations, etc., was elliminated by feedback phase compensation. This allows the sensitivity to be maintained at the maximum by keeping the interferometer in quadrature phase condition. The frequency response of metallic glass was found to be nearly flat in the range of 90 Hz-2 kHz and dc bias field for the maximum ac response was 3.5 Oe. The interferometer output showed good linearity over the range $\pm$0.5 Oe. For 1 kHz ac magnetic field the scale factor S and the minimum detectable magnetic field were measured to be 8.0 rad/Oe and $3X10^{-6} Oe/\sqrt{Hz}$at 1 Hz detection bandwidth respectively.
